my hot tub ruined my social life

I have a fairly upscale 2500 square foot home in the hills above Santa Fe. I love to entertain. I often have barbecues, dinners, community events (Moveon.org, presidential debate watch parties), and movie nights in my surround theater. I generally prefer serving nice meals rather than having potlucks. I used to get fairly large responses, often 20 to 40 people coming to my events.

About six months ago, I bought a hot tub. I thought it was the one thing my home was missing. To keep the water free of residual laundry detergent, I made a “no bathing suit” rule.

Guess what? Almost everyone stopped coming to my events. Now I get maybe one or two people? Why? Obviously it’s because two decades of Christian fundamentalism influence has trickled down from our right wing government and most people—even self ascribed “alternatives” and “liberals”--have internalized the moralistic anti-human body and anti-sexuality bullshit.

So goes it. I would rather have no one come to my house for fear of seeing a naked body than sell out to that repressive Christian bullshit, thank you.

In Canada now! Border crossing was a breeze at the northern terminus of I-15. The interstate, which originates all the way south at the Mexican border suddenly ends with a "Reduced Speed Ahead" sign and the modern, institutional buildings of American and Canadian immigration.

No one in line. A few questions from a scrutinizing and suspicious looking Canadian immigration officer . . . "Any firearms, tobacco, goods for sale. alcohol?" My truthful answer: "No!" Then my passport and driver license got me through.

Road signs in kilometers now . . have to use the inner ring on my speedometer to see my speed! Maximum speed on the open highway: 110! (near 65 mph).

Trekking through the rain towards Calgary then Banff!

Tuesday, July 22 brought incredibly powerful hail storms to Montana. I was on the way to Bozeman Hot Springs to work out at the gym and soak but zero-visibility stopped traffic. Ever been waiting in a car while golfball-sized hail pounded on you? I thought it would crack the windows--but thankfully, the bark was louder than the bite!

I finally got the gym but the power was out and the place closed early.

I do not believe in monogamy

For years I’ve been a fence sitter. The concept of sexual exclusivity--i.e. pretending one is not a sexual being except in the presence of only one other person—never made sense to me. However, I pandered to that cultural norm intermittently out of fear that I would be stigmatized, marginalized, rejected, and ultimately wind up alone.

Well, that approach hasn’t worked, because I AM ALONE! I’ve concluded that the mixed messages and lack of clarity drive away both the monogamous-minded women and ALSO the poly-minded women.

From now on, I follow my heart, beliefs and sensibilities and take a clear stance. I do not believe in sexual ownership. I do not believe “commitment” requires such ownership or allowing oneself to be possessed.

The closest primates to humans, the Bonobos (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bonobo), have a more peaceful, cooperative society than humans, and they are non-monogamous and highly sexual. That confirms my beliefs.

nudity prohibition

I believe that prohibitions against nudity are religious inventions designed for purposes of control, power and economics. There is no objective reason to prohibit nudity; there is no empirical data suggesting nudity "harms" people.

Those who spout anti-nudity rhetoric exemplify a sociological process called "internalization": Values constructed externally in society are perceived to be one's own values. They also exemplify what some sociologists call the "coercion model," wherein those in power pressure everyone else to comply with their rules via enforcement mechanisms such as statute and stigmatization.

A few inches fell this evening. Beautiful, but ruined my workout! No sooner had I got to the gym and pumped iron for a few minutes, the snow came down like crazy. I do not like driving on snowpacked roads so home I went before it got too deep.

I was looking forward to celebrating New Year’s eve at The Verb Collective in Albuquerque.

The Verb is an art gallery in the broadest sense of the word. Almost anything creative is considered art. I love it. Figure drawing, dancing, live music, drumming, hanging out and relating, as well as painting and sculpture! We’ve even had “Massage Pamper” nights complete with foot baths and volunteer massagers (like me) offering very passionate and heartfelt massages!

Alas, during yesterday's raw lunch at Body a new dear black lesbian friend with dreads (almost one of a kind in this town) may have saved my life: “DO NOT drive I 25 tonight! Any other day of the year—OK!”

I realized she was right: “Amateur drinkers’ night on the highway.”

So a Bolivian film (Sexual Dependency), a modest bottle of Champagne poured over mango sorbet and (organic) bourbon vanilla ice cream, and three beautiful women (two Texans!) was MY New Year's eve.

No complaints. No hangover. Alive and well.

public nudity and sexuality

Have a problem with public nudity and/or sexuality? I have good news! There’s actually NOTHING "wrong" with either! The Church is lying to you!

So let go and become human again!

If someone gets mad just tell them their judgements are not their own but they are INTERNALIZED cultural values (a sociological concept) and to start thinking for themselves!

sex and society before free market economics and the rise of the Christian Right

In the 1970 and 1980s:

A mobilized society demanded and forced an end to the Vietnam War.

I lived in San Francisco and Marin County. It was common to see people engaged in sexual activity at the beaches, in the forests around Muir Woods, and on the hillsides of Mt. Tam.

Do you think this still happens now?

Hey, you twenty and thirty-something kids! While you were being born, us twenty and thirty-somethings were exploring love and sexuality and questioning authority and religious morality and war making and EXPANDING our boundaries.

Where is our society now? We are certainly scared of AIDS, terrorism, each other, being hurt, being ripped off, having our BOUNDARIES violated . . . We are a war making country.

And I don't care if you say "I am not the one killing people in Iraq. I do not support the war."

SORRY, we are all responsible. WE elected the President (without whom the war would not have taken place) either directly or by not voting or by not mobilizing our community. WE continue to allow this killing to go on by our non-involvement and apathy.

Is the commonly heard wisdom, "The 60s didn't work" really true? Do we really have a better society now? DOES IT WORK NOW? (Ask the million dead, ask the shrinking middle class, ask the hard-working people who ca't afford to get medical and dental care).

Well, I do admit--TODAY, if you want to pretend that what is hapenning really isn't--JUST CHANGE THE CHANNEL. (When I was a little kid you could change the channel too but you had to--gasp--WALK over to the TV).

Whole Foods everywhere

I think Whole Foods should insititute a frequent shoppers program, with extra points for visiting multiple Whole Foods. By my non-scientific estimation, I've been to at least 50 different ones! On my drive from Northern California back to Santa Fe a few days ago, Whole Foods at each end of the journey, as well as the Fresno Whole Foods in the middle, saved me from Burger King and Taco Bell!

One thing for those of you who like the sarcastic description, "Whole Paycheck": Go check the prices of organics in Canada. Calgary: $5 for a carton of soymilk. Nelson, BC: $15/lb. for organic chicken. I'm not kidding.

After so many months on the road Summer & Fall, it sure is nice to be home.

Northern California is full of natural beauty, intelligent ideas, intellect, sexiness and daring opportunities. I had my trials and tribulations as well as love and rewards. Got a lot of work accomplished; made a client very happy. Clicked with a beautiful woman who enchanted me so . . got a bit carried away . . . had to let go.

New Mexico is truly enchanted. Ancient cultures, many escapes from big box stores and franchised America, open space, relaxed life, few crowds, I can be myself.
