Building on the American Tribal Style (ATS) foundation that Shakti Rowan instilled within the Heart Beat Collective, this class will endeavor to introduce the dancer to the most current ATS-style movements as well as Vadalna improvised fusion movement that can be performed within the ATS format. Who are Vadalna’s latest inspirations? Domba, Unmata and Mardi Love to name a few. :-)

Tribal Intensives are just that: intense. These monthly 3 hour trainings are designed to either immerse you in a tribal dance topic that you have no prior experience with and are wanting a crash course in order to elevate your personal dance skill OR for dancers who are tasted the below listed topics and would like to dramatically increase their amplitude in one class. These classes are not for the faint of heart! But fear not! Beginners as well as advanced students will benefit from the classes as it will attempt to push your dance to the next level.

#1: Tribal Balancing – October 21st
#2: Shimmy Layers - November 18th
#3: Oooey Gooey Tribal Movement – December 16th

Tribal Balancing
This workshop will cover Vadalna’s unique tray balancing method as well as tribal sword balancing technique. The workshop will begin with a yoga infused warm up targeted specifically for tribal dancers. From there, dancers will then pick up their sword or tray and will quickly review basic beginning balancing techniques leading before moving into intermediate & advanced Vadalna tribal fusion balancing movements. From there, participants will take the arsenal of knowledge they’ve just acquired and fuse their new movements into a choreography. Time allowing, dancers will then be encouraged to find a partner(s) and attempt to execute the choreography with other dancers, thereby learning additional techniques needed when dancing in duet or group situations.

Note: A limited number of additional swords and trays will be available for people to use so please bring your own balancing props if possible.

Shimmy Layers
Vadalna’s “Shimmy Layers” Tribal Intensive seeks to break down those seemingly impossible shimmy layered movements that we’ve seen grace the stage by tribal fusionistas Kami Little and Mardi Love and always wanted to bring to our own bodies. The workshop will begin with a yoga infused warm up targeted specifically towards loosening of tight muscles in preparation to the beginning of the shimmy workshop. Dancers will learn how to relax into the basic shimmy and create a core base from which to return to when needed. Participants will then delve deeper by adding a set order of layers to the core base as be begin to train our bodies to be in “more than one place at a time.” At the end of the technique section of the intensive, dancers will be taught a short choreography to incorporate the layered shimmies into.

Note: This intensive will be highly aerobic and will move at a relatively quick pace. We invite you to bring water, snacks and allow yourself to take breaks when needed.


Oooey Gooey Tribal Movement
Vadalna’s Oooey Gooey Tribal Movement Intensive seeks to delve deeply into the world of tribal fusion fluid movement. What are the techniques towards creating that boneless look we adore? What subtle articulations can we add as dancers towards bringing fluidity to a more intense level? What exercises and strength building techniques are integral to creating that effortless look? What are some new movements that bring tribal fluidity to a new level? The Oooey Gooey Tribal Movement Intensive seeks to enrich the natural fluid nature of tribal dance to a deeper level and will then take these techniques and apply them towards the creation of a fluid, molten choreography at the end of the intensive.

Note: This intensive is a highly strenuous intensive formed on the basis of strength as the foundation of fluidity. We invite participants to take breaks and stretch regularly throughout the session.
