My Testimonials

December 8, 2004
So, you're in a little bit of a "funk", and although you might be surrounded by a serene landscape, or a beautiful sunset, you can't see past the tip of your own nose, and THAT'S when the music just kinda comes out of nowhere (and you hear the cheerful sounds of "The Association" lilting all around you)...

Who's trippin' down the streets of the city
Smilin' at everybody she sees
Who's reachin' out to capture a moment
Everyone knows it's NAT'LIE!

And NAT'LIE has stor-my eyes
That flash at the sound of lies
And NAT'LIE has wings to fly
Above the clouds (above the clouds!)
Above the clouds (above the clouds!)

- - flute solo - -

- - first verse repeat - -

Everyone knows it's NAT'LIE!
[repeat and fade...]

Where was I... OH YES! Natalie! Of course, Natalie is not just an "electronic presence" (as few, yet particularly LUCKY individuals here know oh-so-well...), nor is she primarily a physical/intellectual/emotional presence - - Natalie is, in its most pure definition, a FORCE OF NATURE! She's - -

Who's trippin' down the streets of the *!!!SCRAAAAAAAAAATCHHHHHH!!!* OKAY, enough with the goddamn record - - they get the point!

Look at her iconic tribe photo - - JUST LOOK AT IT RIGHT NOW - - and I DARE you to tell me you've seen an electronic representation of a person's likeness BORE a HOLE through your skull like THAT, AND make you want to confess to her, out of the effing BLUE, to all of the times you kick-started yourself under the itchy wool covers at summer camp when you were a teenager! Heh? HEH??? I didn't HEAR YOU! That's right, you CAN'T. Because, Natalie is a CRAZY GODDESS, but, crazy LIKE A FOX! She softens the hardest heart with her sensibilities, melts the most cynical personalities with her sincerity, dazzles the most self-absorbed pompous pseudo-intellectual bastids with her mind, makes them ALL do what she wants them to do, and then - - she has BREAKFAST! Want to know what she does from lunch to late-night snack? If you're good, and I mean VERY, VERY GOOD, you may have a chance to find out. BUT I DOUBT IT. 'Cause her bullsh!t meter is always on, and always true. Natalie! A sweet and good friend. Now, GET OUT OF HER WAY, CRETIN!!!

Everyone knows it's NAT'LIE!
[repeat and fade...!]

Sincerely, atomic!

You step in her world, and suddenly you can never envision your own without her. She breaths life into rooms. You want to lounge in her presence. She reminds you of life and its wonderful possibilities until you believe her despite of yourself. You might not be on a mission, but she'll give you one. You might not believe in yourself, but she'll give you her faith. You might not feel strong, but she'll give herself. Her creativity is infectuous, bold, and a constant force in my life. She stirs my thoughts - with a simple smile or unthinkable ideas, never giving up on herself and the one's she loves. She has taken my grief, my sadness and held the life within me up to my face. What could be a greater gift - aside from having her as a friend, period? I am eternally grateful for you choosing to be a friend in my life.

An asphalt princess with a pen. Don't be swayed by her kind words and airy demeanor. Her writings can be cruel and brash mixed with deep honesty and lucid humanity. An ambassador of spit fire poetry Natalie is one of my most critical peers with a keen eye for the cliche'. A good friend. A talented writer and an unmoving critic. A formidiable adversary for any commercial mutterings.

When I feel like sharing and I'm poemles

She wrote about it in 6th period. It was her freewrite. I'm teaching Othello, and I was trying to get the students to think about Iago's manipulation of Roderigo. So I had them define manipulation. Then asked them to freewrite about a time where they manipulated someone or was manipulated themselves. I used some light example about how my brother Tony used to manipulate me to do his chores. I told them to keep it light...as if I knew I was asking for trouble.

I had no idea that the b... read more

I saw someone die over the weekend.

I went on a field trip with some of my students and a bunch of different schools. The retreat teaches kids how to talk to each other. They mix ‘em up and put different races and schools in cabins and dialogue groups. It’s highly structured and the process is really intense. I went cause four of my students went. And three of them came from my most difficult period…'so I figured maybe we could bring it back with us into our classroom.

I can't breathe. Everything is really really noisy, and I miss the forest, but I love it here.

Interesting thing because I notice similarities between New York and the pine and aspen forests of Colorado.

The light changes all the time in both places, diversity of weather.

In the city, it's because the buildings reflect the light on the street.
In the forest, it's the trees reflecting the light on the trail.

In the city as I walk up and down the tons of stairs, I feel the s... read more

Yesterday afternoon I hiked to the South Willow falls and got caught in a hailstorm on the way back. Amazing. Painful. Cold. Almost electrocuted, but completely electrified. Amazing.

It took me two hours to get to the falls. I had a small break. Then the rain came, then the hail. Some folks were hunkering down under trees; I just jogged with Echo the whole way back. Damn, I'm getting really strong: surprising myself.

Crazy, it took me only an hour and fifteen minutes to get h... read more

I have my days to myself; my hikes have grown to 3 to 4 hours long. Then I play with Hunter in the evenings because his brother, Fischer, is still in the hospital.

The other day I met an old man on the trail and we talked standing on top the soft soil among the evergreens about some other trails, but mostly we talked about life. He showed me some things in the forest that I hadn't noticed. Things beyond the remnants of a log cabin, the mica glass in some rocks, the burnt bark from a pre... read more

My fun eartly mountain brother has offically named his new son, Fisher.

Hunter, his other son, went to daycare today, and I went for a thee hour hike and got lost and then found my way home again. I really feel super human in the forest and resolving direction issues brings me weird nature pride.

Currently drinking Shiraz trying to write a poem about juxtaposing urban to woods via IPOD experience in wilderness.
