As a Greek American ... the fusion of American & Near Eastern cultures attracted me to bellydance. While channel surfing the radio today, I tuned into a Christian rock station (don't get me started on Christians co-opting the devil's music ... couldn't they just stick to gospel?) Anyway, I heard a newscast about a California initiative to "defend" marriage. Defend marriage from what? Bellydance has undergone a revolution in the past few years. Modern Tribal Fusion has risen to the forefront. LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT. But I also hate it sometimes ... when this shallow, co-opt other peoples' culture thing happens. Bellydance is NOT an American invention ... even though we invented American Tribal Style ... the form still has its roots in NEAR EASTERN DANCE.
