It's hard to say whether the "new Jewish culture" that neo-Hasidism is at least tangentially a part of is about something more substantial than latte foam. If neo-Hasidism means a style or a trend, NeoHasid.org hopes to be something more than "trendy", more than style. From the other side of the glass, if we truly need a revolution in how we think about community and religion, or a revelation of new forms of Jewish community, it's hard to explain how singing a nigun can make that happen. Yet that is at least part of the vision of what this neo-Hasidism is or could be about. This section explores where we're going, where we should be going, and what it all means. In 1995, the year after Reb Shlomo Carlebach z"l died, a group of friends came together to form a Chasidic egalitarian minyan on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, led by David Seidenberg and Shaul Magid. On Shabbat B'reishit (the shabbat right after Simchat Torah), we davened together for the first time, meeting once a month for several years. A wonderful community of committed people from many walks of Jewish life, including ex-Yeshiva-niks and currently Orthodox yidn, Conservative and Reform rabbis and rabbinical students, etc., etc., began to gather to dance and sing, share Torah and meals. One decade after the first Chasidic Egalitarian minyan, NeoHasid.org was created by Rabbi David Seidenberg to help folks integrate Chasidic song, learning, and nusach into their davenning and communities.
