What can I say about Nepenthe! She is a great person! She is always the first to volunteer her talents to my Jane Doe Benefit every year. She's a joy to watch with her charming smile and passion! Her drum solo's are always full of fun and energy. You can tell by watching her that she really loves doing what she does!

Mohammed Shahin was SO awesome. I love Reda-style. And I love when a teacher has perfect musicality, when every choreographed move is just what the music would have told me to do if I had been listening properly. And he was a really good instructor, really good at teaching the choreography, breaking down combinations, and articulating what he wanted us to do. Much better, actually, than Dina was, the only other Egyptian instructor I've had. I still love Dina, of course, but Mr. Shahin had... read more

My private lesson with Susi Good was so helpful. It was so confirming of all the things I was thinking. What we talked about was baladi progressions, how to analyze and respond to the music, and movements you can use for certain sections. I was happy to know that I was on the right track, and also got some new ideas. I also learned the differences in how an American vs. an Egyptian would respond. I.e. in my American training, we try to always do everything symmetrically, try to change it... read more

The Red Fez is a great place to perform, and just to go to hang out, drink, eat. It had a really great party atmosphere, a beautiful setting, good drinks, and great food. I was really impressed.

I had the best time! I finally got what people are talking about with live music. I actually knew the drummer (Charlie) from shows at the Middle East, but he really went off tonight like a fire-cracker (in a good way). We danced a lot together, really playing off each other. The rest of the... read more

Today, May 3rd - Amira Jamal's recital at BU, in the student center, upstairs near the Terrace Lounge, 5$. I will be performing to Banat Iskanderia, and also Lilya and I are debuting our duet to a fun Arabic pop song. Also, tonight at 9pm and 10:30pm, live Arabic music and two dancers (Alicia & myself) at the Red Fez in the South End.

Two years ago at Jane Doe, two of my troupemates had their wallets and cellphones stolen from the dressing room/bathrooms at the Dance Complex. Last night, it happened again! I took my purse everywhere I went because I was concerned about theft, but I thought I was being overly paranoid. It turns out the girl whose bag was next to mine had her wallet stolen, and during the show, the thief went out and charged up all her cards. A pro. It makes me feel dirty to think of someone pawing thro... read more

Re: REVIEW: Drills! Drills! Drills! DVD (in Bellydance Reviews) I love the zig zag drill as well. I do this while waiting for the microwaves at work.

The strengthening exercises were great as well. I was surprised at how difficult they were for me - guess that means I should be doing them more often.

loved my first MS workshop - and where can you get his DVDs? (in Friends of Mohamed Shahin) I went to a wonderful Mohammed Shahin workshop today on Assaya. I was really impressed with him as a teacher. He has excellent English and knows what we call the movements here, so he's a really good teacher. He was also able to see what people... read more

Re: Different kinds of Shimmies (in The Biz of Belly Dance) There sure are a lot and everyone has their own names for them. Leyla Jouvana teaches 21 shimmies and a number of variations, and even came out with a sequel with MORE variations. Basically any movement can be sped up into a shimmy.

Whatever... read more
