Health Care Surcharges on SF Restaurant Bills - love it or hate it?
Mon, May 5, 2008 - 10:28 PMSince then, I've seen several restaurants tack 2-4% health care surcharges onto the bill. Others add a specific dollar amount per customer rather than a percentage. I've seen it at Epic Roadhouse, the Water Bar, and even today at the Buckhorn Grill in Embarcadero 4.
Personally, I have no problem with this. I feel like this ordinance forces prices to be raised and by making it a surcharge, at least I know why. More importantly, I have waited plenty of tables in my youth and worked lots of hourly jobs without health care. It's hard work and I'm happy to see these people be treated fairly,
However, lots of yelp reviews seem to indicate that patrons are pissed.
I'm preparing a blog entry for digestthis.wordpress.com about the subject and would like to get some well thought out arguments on both sides.
What do you think?

P.S.
This effects more than just restaurants but it seems to be causing a lot of controversy when people see charges on restaurant bills. |

I think it's a stopgap... We won't solve the insurance problem that way. I do think everyone deserves access to health care and to living without the fear that some catastrophe will wipe them out for life. And I understand that costs money. So I guess it's okay. I just wish we'd stop tiptoeing around the edges and just fix the damn problem. :)

I personally have no issues with it. The US health care system is a joke. As far as I'm concerned anything that gets more health care to those who need it, is a step in the right direction. This may or may not be the solution, but it usually takes us decades to get things right. I'd rather step forward, than step back or not move at all.
Eating out is a luxury. I have disposable income. It's my responsibility to put some of that disposable income to work for those in need. |

I have no problem with this. If I'm too broke to eat out, I will eat at home. If I can afford to dine out, I have no problem contributing a few extra bucks to other's healthcare. It would be different if it was a tax applied on basic necessities like gas or groceries, tho I bet it's there too, we just don't see it.
Having no healthcare myself (I'm a contractor) I know first hand that it sucks, and really can't disagree with any effort aimed at providing more of it for more people. |

seeing as how I hardly ever eat at restaurants with more than 50 employees
it doesn't really make a difference to my pocket book.
As for the whole health care situation in this country: Let's just say I'm happy to be young and healthy. |
