Help Hollis Get Home

    </a>
<div>If you know Hollis Hawthorne and are reading this now for the first time, I am so sorry.

My friend Hollis was in a motorcycle accident in India this past week. She has suffered extreme brain stem injury and is in a coma. Stanford Medical Center has accepted her but the problem now is getting her home. Costs for med-vac-ing her home are about $150K. Her friends, family and burners are doing all that we can.

Details can be found at http://www.friendsofhollis.blogspot.com/ and http://helpholligethome.blogspot.com/ --Even if you only have an extra $10, please consider helping out. If you have a lot more, then, that would be wonderful. If you know a pilot with a plane that can handle this, please contact a family member, immediately. You can find contact info on either of those blogs.

(Pictured above, Hollis and I on the back of the Lunch's "art sleigh," Christmas 2006. Hollis is on the left. This is a great memory for me but not so wonderful as Hollis "floating" across the playa doing cartwheels for me at dawn, JuPlaya '06.)</div>

<div>I have a stack of large banners that have printing on one side and are blank on the other, which used to be graphics for a 100"x100" trade show booth. They're heavy-duty flexible plastic, almost like vinyl, some are matt board, some are more like fiberglass; all are flexible and durable--varying sizes. A couple have slightly worn edges but most pieces are almost new.

They seem like they'd be great materials for making signs or for a burning man camp as the material is durable and easy to paint over.

They're in SOMA and you'll need to come get'm.

<div>I'm really going stir crazy. The good news is that my knee seems to have made huge progress since the weekend. The bruising is almost gone and the swelling is WAY down. Last week, it looked like a basketball. This weekend, like a large grape fruit. Today, it's more like a softball. So yeah, I guess we're making progress.

I see the doctor in the morning at 8:15. I hope to actually make it into the office afterwards.

Steve rented a wheelchair so that we could go to museums over the weekend. We didn't make it due to Juicy's 3-day-long birthday party. However, we are going to use it tomorrow to go to Fire Arts! So watch out burners! That's where you'll find ME!

<div>The email I sent this morning pretty much says it all.

---------- Forwarded message ----------
From: Amy Abascal
Date: Mon, Jun 23, 2008 at 10:35 AM
Subject: Canceling my subscription
To: billing@tribe.net, mark@tribe.net

I wish to cancel my subscriptions to tribe.net. I am currently paying for two subscriptions. I no longer wish to pay tribe.net for service which is rarely, if ever, available.

As a tribe.net user since, 2003, I also wish to express my deep regret over the degradation of tribe over the past year. It's gone from bad to worse. I championed the subscription concept in hopes that you could afford either the hardware or the staff to solve your downtime problems. Neither happened and frankly I'm left wondering what that money was spent on.

There was a time when tribe was a thriving tool that supported the community. I understand that times change and so do businesses. tribe is sorely missed.

Regards,

<div>The boys were watching the Military Channel so it sounded like a perfect time to do my nails. I sat on the bed with pillows propped up behind me painting my toenails. As I was pulling the top out of the bottle, and before I could wipe the excess polish off the side, Orion grabbed the brush from my hand. He smirked and then smeared a giant glob of polish onto his index finger; far extending his nail and dripping down his finger. "What do I do now?" asked the silly kid.

"Well, now that you have wet nail polish, you have to hold perfectly still until it dries. And since you put so much on, it's gonna be a good long while. You comfortable?" I replied, without moving much.

"WHAT!?" cried Orion.

"Well, I suppose if you don't want to hold still, you can go into the bathroom and wipe some of it on a tissue. But if you get nail polish on anything in my house, there's gonna be big trouble," I answered.

Orion ran to the bathroom. I heard a "HI-YaH!" and a thud and then Steve asked him what the h*** he was doing. Apparently, Orion kicked the door open while Steve was peeing.

I remained on the bed while I applied another coat. In a minute, Orion came back into the room with a bundle of toilet paper wrapped around is finger like a huge round ball, pointing at me.

"What are you doing, kiddo?"

"Getting that stuff off," he answered.

"Was it wet when you stuck that paper on there?" I asked

"Uh-huh," he replied.

I groaned and said nothing. Orion began unwinding all the toilet paper off his finger. When he got to the bottom, he found that he had one lovely Cabernet Summer colored finger nail.

"OK," he announced. "I want this off now."

"How are you going to make that happen?" I asked him.

"How do you get it off?" he answered.

"It doesn't just come off, Orion. It's on there. That's the thing with nail polish. It stays on, even when you wash it."

Now he was mad and furiously wiping his finger on his pajama pants while stomping his feet and making noise. I asked him to come sit down and have a little chat with me. At the end of our discussion, I asked him what he thought the moral to this story was.

He answered, "Find out what you're getting on your fingers because it may just stick to you forever."</div>

<div>Hurray! The doctor wants me to start walking on it. No more knee brace or crutches. I'm still a little wobbly but I'm thrilled to be able to bend my knee!

Freedom will be short lived as I'm having arthroscopic surgery on the thirtieth. I'll be laid up again for a week to three weeks depending on how much swelling there is. I plan on keeping it to a week.</div>

Mercury...

<a href="http://people.tribe.net/netdiva/blog/ac4e2be6-12d9-4429-8937-7a426fa3ffc8"> <img class=" picThumb" src="http://images.tribe.net/tribe/upload/photo/34e/bbc/34ebbc2c-fd92-4578-8687-601f0e962228.thumb" width="49" height="78" alt="" />
    </a>
<div>Mercury went into retrograde on the 26th (day after my knee accident) and does not go direct until June 19. I've felt it's effects incredibly strong for this period. Seems like fubar'd technology, miscommunications, and feeling of stagnation abound!

I have been mostly working from home because of my knee which has meant I've been on the phone several hours a day. There has not been a single conference call that I haven't been dropped from at least once. Some have been so bad that we've just had to reschedule the whole call. Webex, Go-to-Meeting and other remote desktop sharing apps have been almost useless, although I typically rely on them heavily. Cell phone signals seem to drop for no apparent reason. Skype borks. Even my landline keeps getting all this noise on the line.

There have been wild miscommunications between my coworkers causing near war. I have found myself having to explain and re-explain things. People are late because Caltrain has been all screwed up, and even though I don't take Caltrain, it's affected me indirectly.

Furthermore, my ability to accomplish anything has been hampered by my bad knee. I've just begun accepting that all plans have to be fluid because I may feel up to it and I may not. I'm getting rather adept at rescheduling. Getting anywhere is a process as, I cannot drive in the brace and Muni is a pain on crutches.

I've seen some rather dramatic effects of it on my friends, too, when a loved one dropped off the map for a day or two and nobody could reach her. Everyone got together waiting to hear news. So rough. (And yes she resurfaced.)

Even money has been weird: Our finances got screwed up because our broker took the wrong amount of money from the wrong account overdrawing my checking account.

I'd love to find an article describing how mercury in retrograde in gemini affects my chart (sun &amp; moon in leo, libra rising, mercury in leo).

I'm ready for Mercury to go direct. I'm tired of all this extra effort and feeling like I'm not really moving forward. I guess the lesson here is that I actually am. Mercury only looks like it's going backwards, it's not really. However, while we're in the midst of it, it's difficult to see it that way. Peddler harder!

<div>I had grand plans for today. I was going to catch up on all sorts of things I'm behind on and then have dinner with Lord Huckleberry. My knee was feeling so much better yesterday and I clearly over-did it. I've spent my entire day with it elevated. It's KILLING me. It's more swollen than it's been in a week. *grumble*

I see the orthopedist on Wed morning and theory get out of this brace.

<div>I'm supposed to wear this brace for two weeks. The crutches are optional which is great news because they're a pain in the ass. I can't carry anything with them and they hurt my armpits.

Because this is the second time I've dislocated my left kneecap, he wants me to have surgery in a couple of weeks. The doctor says it's just going to keep happening unless we do something about it. It will be arthroscopic, so that's good. He says we'll discuss it in more detail at my follow-up in 2 weeks.</div>

<div>One of the very best weekends ever!

I seriously had so much fun that I'm still glowing. What a wonderful event Fire Mountain has become. We've been lucky enough to attend both years. I'm so glad that Massive Bri, Helen, Andllama, Andrea, Cubes, Cat, June, Che, Leslie &amp; Jeremy also made it out this time.

We did have one hiccup which was that I seriously screwed my knee up. I'm in a brace and on crutches now. I had it checked out at the E.R. last night and I see an orthopedist in the morning. They think I have ligament damage but if I'm lucky, it's just a bad sprain.

Oh well, the trip was still absolutely wonderful.

By the way, I lost my camera. If anyone found a silver sony digital camera, let me know!</div>
