about me
Brief bio: Emigrated from Russia at age 9, grew up in Boston, went to Chicago for college and to Dallas for med school and grad school. I did my residency training in radiology in Springfield, MA. Spent a couple of years in Boston, doing research on how to use advanced neuroimaging techniques to improve stroke treatment. Now I am in in Philly, completing my clinical training.

Along the way, I have accumulated many wonderful friends, now scattered all over the country. I am on Tribe partly to keep in touch with them, and partly to reach out to cool new interesting people.

A word about requests to be added as a friend. In Russian, the word that translates as "friend" indicates a close relationship with some implied intimacy and obligation. I know that's not the way it's used here, and I obviously don't hold to a rigid standard on this, but I generally do not apply the word "friend" to people I have never met at all. Thus, if we haven't met and you ask to be added and I don't do so, please don't take it personally.

Highly irregular blog

I have a car. It's a cherry red '99 Toyota Solara (the "sporty" coupe version of the Camry). Some of you, my friends and readers, have seen it. It's got a ton of miles on it, but it runs and gets me from point A to point B quite well.

Some years ago, a former girlfriend used the car, and left it parked in a garage on a ramp, without setting the parking brake. The car rolled backwards and encountered a concrete post, which left a dent in the right rear quarter-panel. I've been driving aroun... read more

Cautionary tale for those into improvised bondage:

xkcd.com/443/

On another note, I started back into clinical radiology today, as a senior resident. First day case conference. The professor says "for the first day, we should do a low-stress didactic lecture [where he tells us about cases instead of putting us on the spot to interpret them], but we won't". He proceeds to pull up cases and call on the seniors who have been in the program for several years. After the first case, I ... read more

oops... in my previous post I missed saying which day, so:

I'll be loading the truck starting in the late morning/early afternoon on Sunday. If anyone can help, perhaps at 1pm, I would be grateful.

Beer, wine, and snacks provided.

Hello, folks.

This weekend, I'm going to move to Philadelphia. I'm getting a U-Haul truck on Sunday, and I was hoping I could get a few friends to help me load it.

I live in Needham. The loading will take place Sunday in the early evening (my boss is having a barbecue in my honor that will last until about 5pm). I'll provide beer/wine and snacks.

Can anyone help?

Two articles on how we read online, and how this might affect us.

I have noticed signs in myself of the kind of effect the second article talks about. I still read books, but it's a bit harder to slog through something that does not offer frequent reinforcement of some sort (new information, entertaining ideas, etc.).

Praise I should try to live up to

Rusian. Firedancer. Hot. Need I say more?

How does one begin after the glowing praise of previous testimonials?

Grisha manipulates fire as if he were plying his own form, and he maneuvers his own powerful form with a lupine serenity that would be intimidating were his manner not so kind.

His versatility is an alloy of his talents and strengths with his agile self-carriage, allowing him to navigate many different worlds and adapt admirably to the setting, whatever it may demand. This could mean a gentle shoulder, well-chosen words, boundless hedonistic relish, stately bearing, devilish machinations, leisurely exploration, watchful defense, or intent debate.

Grisha is the very image of a sheepdog: one of those rare and attentive protectors standing betwixt the sheep and the wolves. Deeply acquainted with the means and motives of the wolf, the sheepdog knows neither blitheness nor malice, and keeps a keen eye on both the herd and the pack.

You will trust him with your life before you realize it.

You won't want to look away. I still don't.

The fire is a gift and it takes a wonderful fire artist to bring the energy from it to us all.

I have marveled at the passion and ferocity, with which Grisha works the magick of the flames.

My appreciation for this multi-faceted and very unique individual extends to the realm of brotherhood.

That mixing of science and art is very rare.

My brother has the proven ability to do this and more.

His talent and zest for life truly move me, because I understand the drive that comes with the great leap onto
The Seeking Path.

I embrace all jumpers!

There are no few words to fully describe Greg/Grisha. He is talented, intelligent, compassionate, and so much more. He truly is there for you as friend, and gives his heart to living life in its fullest. When I think of him, I think of the deep sea. Powerful, deep, mysterious, so full of life, and far more to him than is the surface . He is a multi-faceted individual that sparks your heart and your mind. And I love the late night conversational debates!

Oh and he's a great kisser! SMooch!

The word I most think of when I think of Grisha is impressive. Just hang out with him a bit and you'll see what I mean. His extensive academic credentials says a lot about him, and his personality says even more. Sharp, intelligent and witty, he is clearly multi-talented, well disciplined and is destined to leave a large mark in the world. Oh and I love his delightfully devilish smile...:-) I am very glad that he found our tribe here and look forward to getting to know him better.

This testimonial has been a long time in coming. I've found a multitude of small reasons to put it off - only yet another prod got me actually writing it.

Procrastination on this sort of thing is atypical of me. I usually knock out references, testimonials, and the like within a few minutes of the request. That has not been the case here.

After inspection, my motivations for delay are both clear and surprising - this particular task is scary.

I'm not up to the job.

Simply listing Greg's accomplishments would exceed the character count for this testimonials. A just description of them would fill a decent sized hardback. His strengths and abilites, and the stories of where he gained them could make up volume II and III respectively.

Condensing all the good things to say about this man into a few paragraphs is outside of my abilities as a writer. Forgive me.

Suffice it to say that I know no one who wouldn't benefit from more Grisha/Greg in their lives.

The final incarnation of this testimonial took quite a long time in manifestation as I was, for a time, laboring under the misconception that it is possible to define Greg by using the English lexicon. The words that come to mind when I think of him are not merely Russian or English, but rather a combination of all languages, for he is so bold of character and impassioned of nature that it is impossible to confine him to only one.

A spirit requiring no guise or confirmation Greg defies even the descriptive power of adjectives as their modifying tendencies succeed only in blemishing the seductive magnetism of his personality.

Protector, philanthropist, teacher, debaucher, and everlasting wit, he is a gentleman whose twisted and decadently ribald mind keeps everyone guessing yet never ceases to amaze. I have had the most wonderful luck in stumbling across this scalywag and consider it an honor to call him friend, companion, and fellow miscreant.
