Student Troupe at The New Mexico State Fair 2006

If not for Megan, I probably would barely know what tribal belly dancing is - she was my first and continuing instructor for almost two years while I lived in Albuquerque. The word wholeheartedly is a great descriptor for how Megan approaches people and teaching: she puts her whole heart into her relationships with friends and students, as she likewise dedicates herself to all the aspects of tribal belly dancing. Strong is another word I associate with Megan, through her spirit to be in touch with nature and good energy, and her focus on mastering and teaching tribal belly dancing. Megan understands this beautiful moving artform on many important levels and continually strives to learn more, while adeptly sharing her knowledge and techniques with her students. Megan possesses so many exemplary qualities that are integral to this form of dance...she excels at clearly communicating and expressing herself; making those around her feel welcome and special; exalting the life force within all of us; teaching by example; exploring new and renewed ways to bring performance to a new level... She is consistently committed to ensuring that her classes are of a high caliber and that her students benefit from each class. I believe I am a better person for knowing Megan and her family and friends, and I know I am a better and happier dancer - thank you, Megan. ;o*

I first met Megan by chance at a local hafla. Lucky for us! We came there looking to see some good Tribal belly dance. My brother and I had our drums in my car and we were asked to play during an open floor dance. When Megan and her dance partner entered the open dance floor, we immediately connected musically in that magical way that doesn't happen every day. They had to kick us all out of there at the end of the night! It wasn't long after that that we were working together.
Megan's dance, passionate and commanding on one hand, and yet so feminine and spiritual on the other, has inspired the creative gears within us as musicians. I always look forward to our Sunday
rehearsals and the collaborating we do. More than once I've forgotten what I'm playing simply
because I was so enjoying watching her dance. Megan also has a pretty good understanding of drumming styles and rhythms - we drummers appreciate that!
As a person, Megan is patient, caring, and incredibly insightful. To her students, she brings all this into her teaching style as well. Megan's Tuesday night advanced Tribal belly dance classes are great fun for us to play for.
In just a short time, Megan has quickly accepted us into her Tribal world with patience and the energy of her optimism. I look forward to the magic and music that follows from our creating together.

“I believe in the sense of empowerment that comes from integrating this ancient dance form into one’s body and that it is possible for women of all ages, shapes and sizes. Bellydance has been as much a part of the human experience for me as childbirth.“
-Megan Martyn
I have lived in Alburquerque for 12 years in which time I have given birth to 3 beautiful children, been married and then divorced, learned to dance, and am presently teaching tribal style belly dance to women and girls!
