<div>devlin and i are giving notice at our treehouse...it is possible we would move back if we found a subletter till spetember. please keep your ear to the ground for us about a good place in the bay. our treehouse is $400 a month, very gorgeous, remote and peaceful with good community and community spaces.

gas prices are going to go up to $6 a gallon at the end of the summer and i just don't want to pay out that much for gas and live so remote over paying the equivalent in rent and living close to things i can do and my friends.</div>

    </a>
										<div>planned exended spraying of toxic biological chemicals (beware santa cruz, alameda, san francisco and points beyond!):

Side effects range from vomiting and flu like systems, to male and female reproductive cycle disruption. One child nearly died from the exposure, and some people have developed asthma from being exposed to this chemical concoction. It is cause for alarm that a chemical being labeled as harmless and "safe" even in minute doses, causes severe health effects in some people. The government is racing to cover up and hide the dangerous health effects so that they can continue their aerial spray plans this summer. Your attention and action on this subject is needed in the most important way.

and did you even know rent control was being threatened in san francisco and los angeles? i know, it's already so atrociously high (the apt i rented in the TL for $700 4 years ago goes for $1450 now! can it get any worse? YES IT CAN!!! paris is cheaper, i checked):

    </a>
										<div>i am coming to the city april 10-13; i am already getting totally booked up for fun stuff to do: nights, thurs: dire's band, razorblade monalisa; fri: anti-nowhere league; sat: shadow puppet theatre with angelique, who will also be helping out with the book and so we have palavering to commence. friday maybe i need to meet up with carey in bernal heights to look at flyers, mike tsongas and rach-o to talk about old times and inspire some stories, then over to the east bay at some point (maybe after ANL, to stay with my friend kiki) then spend the next day with joe %$&amp;#ing judd and anathema device (yes? get back to me asap so i know for sure!) sorting through old fliers and pictures, i also want to meet up with jvmatucha that day for more of the same.

i think saturday will be my east bay day and then back to sf for shadow puppets sat. night, then hopefully i have somewhere to stay in the city that has really good internet connection so i can just roll off the couch and do my show at 10 AM sunday morning. after that, i am certain i will be more than ready to head home and collapse.

if i can fit in a sticker-spree in SF i will do so. we got the awesomeville.us stickers and though i only got 30 i hope to make good use of them, since the flyer campaign really upped our listener stats BIG TIME.

jayed and i will be coming down to the bay area together later in the month or early may to meet up with max wolf and vic vale, and hopefully getting together with bambi of the ex-mudwomen in petaluma on the way back up or down or maybe just another day. that will probably be a one-day thing, unless we figure out places to stay.

that's it for now...at some point i will make it down to one of portia's parties, whenever that is, and i want to hang out with my old friend (ancient) charisse. i'm sure there will be much more on the table in the future, so i want to be sure i get all of this managed so i don't end up not getting to it at all due to being extra busy.

oh also in the mix is possibly some stuff (definitely pics, i am waiting to hear back from kenny and should probably email again, we are old friends) from sally or kenny of the mutants, a piece for the LGBT punk section from ginger coyote, and i am waiting to hear back from john (contact through cinthea) who has a ton of pics and fliers as well. we also want to talk to ron turner (last gasp) who is a friend of jayed and mine, so maybe if we stay 2 days in the bay we can get to that.

*whew*

let me know if you brainstorm anyother things for me to do or people to contact. we need stories and pics from the vats, too. </div>

new old school punk zine!

<a href="http://people.tribe.net/nux_vomica/blog/8e16ea16-dcc8-40c7-940c-81ba7276b294">  						          <img class=" picThumb" src="http://images.tribe.net/tribe/upload/photo/7a1/be1/7a1be173-0aee-4f1a-bf38-385cac6ea41c.thumb" width="65" height="44" alt="" />
    </a>
										<div>some of you know that i (julie generic) did a zine called weird weather some years back. it was mostly my own stuff, sort of a purging of all of the things i wanted to say and of course my art. it was well received, and i did several prints of both issues.

now, i have a new idea, and i am really excited about it.

name i want to use is Heart-Shaped Bruise.

this zine will be both a requiem and a revival of ALL old school punk/goth stories and art, focus on SF bay area. the idea is to get writing, interviews, art etc., from people, alive and dead, who made this city a mecca of demented artistry during the years that punk thrived. i also add goth because i feel the two go hand in hand these days, since a lot of present-day goths were old school punks; back then, too, the lines were not so finely drawn.

we will not be covering rivet, industrial, or any of those current manifestations of popular underground music because...well, it covers itself and i am not a huge fan (i do listen but not with the same passion and sense of connection).

what you can do to contribute:

* ideas for the title.
* art: got old flyers, pictures, photos? collage? anything that relates to the topic.
* RIP page(s): photos, music, art of people who are gone; or just a memorandum for someone you miss.
* writing: stories from your personal experiences on the street, in the clubs, with the bands, being there and what was going on with you in general.
* who's doing what now: bands, people, pets.
* ideas for issue themes: the farm, the mabuhay, the on broadway, powell punks, skate scene (jaks of course!), the early deathrock scene, scenes in different cities like chicago, philly, etc.
* contact page: who you are and how to get in touch so you can perhaps connect with old friends who are NOT dead yet.
* any other ideas you might have: brainstorm with me!

please see whatever profile i have up on whatever server you are reading this from for a contact on me....i have used the same email for 10 years. or yahoo id = thriftstoregoth.

i will also be looking into creating an online format. i have basic web design skillz but need more insight in general as to logistics of servers and financial demands.</div>

i need to own some antonio banderas movies. desperados, on the netflix list again...

speaking of BAD ASS...if you haven't seen Dance With The Devil, you have not lived! rosie perez is really hot and tough as shit. it has a low netflix rating cause people do not appreciate santeria psycho fetus haulin' semi-driven' devil worshippin' preppie kidnappers. it's a shame, really.

just watched the first season of 'weeds,' that's some silly shit....i hear the second season is even better so i look forward to that.

saturday we are coming down, in time for misskittywhore's show at pirate cat where we can sit by and make her giggle (i hope), then lunch fo sho and off to pacifica after digging up some nibbles for the scene. misskittywhore, how does that little sushi place we went to before so long ago on 16th and valencia? i might have to chew out some trachea of it's too hipster heavy but good times will be had regardless. besides, raw flesh is raw flesh: trachea, fish, who cares?

I miss you san francisco, and i realize: i never really wanted the east bay. no, i wanted YOU all along, my beloved SF. please forgive me.

sunday: shop shop shop. fabric.

http://www.punknews.org/ seems a tad mainstream but i suspect there are redeeming factors...saw a pic of fat mike and he isn't fat anymore...wonder what they call him now...nancy?

oh yeah my friend jill just emailed me from austin to say that naked raygun is playing there next week. we used to listen to them ALL the time....reading reviews, it seems like they may have lost the old HOT THUMPING HARDCORE style they had...but don't they all eventually. when i die and go to the big mosh pit in the sky, they will be there and we will ROCK.

just thinking of the songs makes me want sex.

compassion rant

<a href="http://people.tribe.net/nux_vomica/blog/5cb2a160-5329-4365-8e84-7120cd6d9f73">  						          <img class=" picThumb" src="http://images.tribe.net/tribe/upload/photo/9c4/b44/9c4b44a5-1b8d-47f2-bec3-2f2dfa466552.thumb" width="65" height="64" alt="" />
    </a>
										<div>i personally do not feel it is my job to alleviate anyone else's suffering without their express permission and cooperation. even then, it is not i who alleviate the suffering, i am only holding the space for them to find their way back to healing, which is the dominant perogative.

i love this topic because i think that it is compassion which heals, and forgiveness which remains in judgement; one cannot forgive if one has no judgment in the first place. i truly believe, from my own experience, that to hold those who have caused harm and pain in compassion is where we heal ourselves, though they themselves may not find healing in this lifetime. compassion just allows in empathy without needing to judge or change. it is by healing our tendency to judge that we also allow healing for ourselves, and ultimately, we do others a disservice to claim to be able to do this for them.

a couple months ago i dreamed of my mother, all her teeth broken out from a bad relationship, addicted to cigarettes and marijuana, alcohol, codependency, you name it (and she is). she was telling me how horrible everything was, how awful her life was, how she wished she had done things differently....and instead of revulsion or anger, which i am accustomed to feeling toward my mother, i felt nothing but compassion. i had an enormous healing from this dream, because i completely saw her with my heart, and not from my own pain. i saw how much pain she was in, and i could not blame or be angry for the things she had done to me. i realized she did the best she could with what she had, and i was responsible for how i handle what i was given to work with (which i have known, but it had a whole new dimension after this dream!).

how can we be angry with another who is in pain? all acting out and aggression comes from a being who is experiencing pain. to be present with the pain of ourself or another without reacting from the ego is the lesson of compassion. when we respond to another (or ourselves) who is acting out from pain with our own reactions, we are only acting out upon our own unhealed pain. so where we react to the pain of another shows us where we are still working on our own pain, and through compassion we heal not them, but ourselves, and allow them the space to heal their own instead of being locked in an abusive cycle of action/reaction.

in other news, i 'borrowed' all these cool hawaiian flower mandalas and i am going to make them into a screen saver. how cool am i?
yes.
way cool.</div>

<div>i just bought a fully loaded fabulous HP pavillion laptop, 20 months old, winXP, officepro, 1 gig ram 100 gig hd, built-in wireless (i didn't know they DID that!!!) 15 inch screen laptop!!! it burns dvd's and cd's, has a good game card and all drivers and whatnot i might need to play games like WOW (not that i would get it, i don't even have internet at home, but we can play other games now...the old computer would seize up when i played spider solitaire!! i mean yes, i do rock that game, but really. life after 64 ram is all about the pants wet with pee.) $500.

i am scared of the laptop.
what if something *happened* to it?
but i guess that since i took such good care of my last, old one, i can trust myself to behave with the new hottie.

now i am waiting for the call to pick up the dvd player and vcr. then, a tv for movie viewing and so dev can hook up his gamecube. i feel so techie. it's exciting, there is now officially NO reason for me to leave the house. oh yeah, except for, life.

now to head to whore foods for my hair dye and then to SF to hang out with &amp;lt;lj user="mskittywhore">

oh and the phone is back on, i now have an LG flip phone that has already saved me from missing an appointment. so that is good.

i hope i can play this on the comp (still shy after the 64 ram), but i got this hilarious game set in the tenderloin of SF, you are stuck in a bar and escape by turning into a cockroach and apparently it is a great game cause it got an award for best action game 2004 from some falutin' PC mag.

it was that or super solitaire. which i know would rock, but i am trying to expand my horizons, now that i *can*.

am i going to turn into a gamer? crazy crazy world.

omg omg omg, i can dowload music and BURN IT TOO!!!! i feel the powah.

i understand if noone actually read this post, i just needed to vent the joy.</div>

    </a>
										<div>I am off to the city for the weekend, saturday and sunday is the robert moss workshop, 'shamanic dreaming.' I am heading down to Graton (in Sonoma county) tonight to stay with my friend Kakouti, then probably Fri and Sat nights with Princessdammit and Damion. It will be weird not having Devlin with me, I'm so used to paying for two dinners, two lunches, etc!

I am not sure if I will be going to the city, I want to, there are things I would like to do there (thriftstores, Mendells on Haight for fabric and trim I cannot afford) but my schedule will be pretty tight and focused in the East Bay.
Friday morning I leave Graton to get to Oakland by 11 for a acupuncture treatment, which takes a couple hours, then do I *really* want to deal with Friday traffic to and from the city (I am going to pick up a used TV for Dev to play Zelda on now that he has an x-box, and to watch movies...did you know that in 2009 you won't be able to watch tv on the regular tv sets anymore because all the stations are going totally digital? You can still watch movies, play games, etc., but no more analog for regular TV viewing, unless you have cable). Acupuncture followed by a nice hot tub at Essex street then perhaps a computer session at a cozy internet cafe I know of on College Ave (thanks Luna for letting me in on that place!) and taking Princessdammit out to dinner at Long Life following it all up sounds SO much nicer. There. I've talked myself out of the city!

I just stole this picture from Lachupacabra on LJ. Too freaking cute.</div>

    </a>
										<div>i was watching an episode of ER, second season last night (yay netflix!) and as they are wheeling in a hit and run patient, the paramedic is giving the doctor the 'bullet:' "vehicle versus pedestrain" was his synopsis.

sorry but, it had me chuckling for some time.

i was just browsing around on CL in the portland and hawaii housing ads. shits and giggles. and yes, portland rents are going WAY up. bad. and MY GOD!!! hawaii rents are not only reasonable, but some really cool opportunities!!! a couple of the posts made me want to pack it all in, *today.* good. except, of course, my current school commitments, and the fact that i will be getting to do mathew woods' advanced herbal course for free next year. oi! so, hanging in there, seeing it through.

i got my TCM (traditional chinese medicine) textbooks for home study. no class, just fascination. they are so good! i love it. i also just got my tibetan yogas of dream and sleep book, and caught myself wondering about how TCM dream study work would fit in with the tibetan stuff. oops. but hey, isn't it about bridging apparent conflicting systems that gives us a greater sense of unification? so, who knows. perhaps i shall delve. mao was an asshole. why are the chinese still in tibet? what is the greater purpose that we do not see when we choose to only see tibet as the victim? if we choose to sit in victim consciousness, can we not see how it is the chinese who have suffered as a rule of this regime, as they are exhibiting unevolved behaviour by perpetuating it? how does that feed into our own victim consciousness? can we creatively and with neutrality bridge the differences of the cultural groups to acheive the resolution we least expect? what is happening there now? i hear that many of the chinese are 'going native,' could this be a part of the healing of not just china and tibet but of all cultures and apparent disparities globally? does this apply to our personal lives as well? is life just randomly fucked up, or does everything have a purpose and seeks to balance?
don't hurt yourself answering.

i have had a revelation about my brain. it has two sides, right and left. the right, as you may know from having a brain yourself, is the side that is creative and intuitive, the left is the logical and organized side. it seems like as i go to school, i get to utilize the left side more, which i am not as accustomed to doing (living the bohemian lifestyle that i have heretofore enjoyed), and how my right side seems to actually benefit and be of more use to me as a result of this left brain activity. i pondered this and came to the conclusion that the right side of the brain is like a child. if it does not get the boundaries and restrictions that it needs, it becomes wayward and wishy-washy, if not downright listless and lazy. it is the activities of the left brain that give the right brain it's boundaries and framework, and so i find that when i have a healthy framework to contain my right brains' impulses, i have a happier right brain because it knows what is required of it within the context of the framework. a child does not develop to it's best potential if it does not have good boundaries, why should i expect my brain to be any different? with that in mind (no pun intended), i have experienced shifts in needs, priorities, and desires since i have started school. in a good way. i find it easier to make decisions for myself and devlin.
and it all makes sense.
though i am sure i could take this a lot deeper.</div>

<div>i have been way to busy to even look at tribe. i am in the third or fourth week of school, full time, lots of physical stuff. then i am doing things on the weekend (power to the peaceful in SF last weekend, then my herb class), probably going to be heading to the city more often.

i have a workshop with robert moss in october.

i am homeschooling devlin again. he has had his hair cut, and we got him new clothes and shoes, so he's looking pretty sharp these days.

i am still doing random festival events with the seaweed business.

i am on academic probation due to low grades 12 years ago BUT i am getting financial aid, $2,088 per semester, so that allows me to take care of some things i might not otherwise be able to afford like my muffler, which has been off for about 2 months now and drives me nuts.

funny but, it seems as if when i have less going on i have more to say, but now i have so much going on there's not as much to say because i can't possibly fit it into the short amount of time i have to do so. but rest assured, my brain is as always in overdrive with lofty and yea, lowly, contemplations. and they are as always bright and insightful, except of course when they are not, which is when i need to remember to keep my mouth shut anyways.

growing, changing, always evolving...or so i'd like to think. what more can one ask of oneself?</div>

										<div>i am feeling that the isolation of our current place is starting to get to me. *cue in theme music for 'repulsion' and pretend i look exactly like catherine deneuve (can't see it? maybe i can dig up an old pic of when i was boldly, brazenly, ridiculously blonde)*

i need my peers, but i get overwhelmed by the drug and alcohol culture that so many of them are living in. can't deal with cities for that reason. i need to keep things simple so i remember what is important.

i would love to connect with more people who do yoga and take care of themselves, but i tend to get bored with that scene too. i want some of everything, and i want it balanced and healthy. and i 'strongly dislike' (picture a little box with a check in it next to that statement) self-righteous soy munchers. soy is evil. there! i said it!!! mwuahahahaha! FUCK A BUNCHA SOY!!!! overrated, overprocessed, genetically engineered, impossible to digest sad abused crop!

i mean seriously. how many older punkers (or deathrock, or goth, etc.) do you know who do yoga, eat well, care for themselves, care for others, and haven't buckled to the status quo? the only one i have ever seen in a yoga class was in a mirror. it is LONELY, people!

so what next? school in this area for the next 9 months (i'll be gestating a new body, thank you! did i mention i added a tai chi class to the yoga, pilates and two bellydance classes? ooooh yeah, baby!), and then....? my landlord has done several things that show me he is not reliable to his word, and there are things about our rental that are really starting to bother me, like the fact that my truck is torn to shit now and our shower/dish water smells SO BAD during the summer (progressively worsening) that if i get my hair wet cause it's too fucking hot, my hair smells like sulfurous pond scum for 2-3 days. i am scared to brush my teeth with that water. there is more, but i will spare you. perhaps when this room is added on i will feel it is worth it, but right now i would rather be living without rent (boom chicky bowow, HAWAII!?) so i could save to have something to show for it down the road.

in the meanwhile, i live on a practically inaccessible hilltop and foster the growth of my movie collection. currently waiting on beetlejuice, edward scissorhands (which devlin says he's gonna hate, the brat! what does he know!) and ever after. ever after is great for flexing the old cinderella martyr complex. i can't help it but i am a romantic. and drew barrymore is also a pisces.

i ramble. or, perhaps i am not rambling enough. i hope things get exciting when school starts, even though it's going to be mainly recent ukiah high school graduates going for their business degrees (oh fucking lord in heaven SPARE ME from this town!!!). i just have to remember i am doing it for ME, and ignore the podunkery.

the boat research has gone swimmingly, as one would imagine. what i want is a 'cabin cruiser.' there are several on CL for less than $10,000 in good shape. here's the current plan: save money, go to school, work all summer again, get my ass in HELLA HECKA WAY GOOD shape, move to hawaii, where i know how to get by on practically nothing, continue with yoga and etc there AND hook up with some boat training. i could have a boat in 2 years.

do i really want a boat? the most common discouragement i have received so far is a) boats are a money pit (well so is land, house, car!) and b) it's a fierce ocean out there (i have been nearly killed by more cars than i could ever count, whether on foot, bike, or driving). i'm reading up on them and wokring it out. but in 2 years when i have $10,ooo dollars saved up, i'm sure i will have no prob figuring out what to do with it, whether it be a boat or a biodeisel landyacht.

NOW GO LOOK AT MY NEW PICTURES!!!!!

my latest insane idea (yay!)

    </a>
										<div>ok so this is really wild, but i am looking into live-aboard boats. ocean and river friendly. i could work my ass off and buy one in a couple of years, and then i'd always have a home in my favorite port cities: portland, SF, berkeley. sooo...and this is a long shot....does anyone have any knowledge of boats, living on a boat, what kind of boat is (an older model, due to finances and choice) the best for cruising the shore line and up rivers?

the waterways are still free, even if we are living in a fascist government. (go ahead and burst my bubble, tell me they have declared marshal law on the rivers too...grrr....)

i would get a motorcycle for those times i want to go inland and there's no river, and bikes for when i am in aforementioned cities. oh and of course puerto vallarta, cause we don't need no stinking passports. and i have friends there. it would be so fab to go to zipolite by boat...:P and i wonder, can you take a small boat around to alaska and over the narrow part to greenland or whatever place is on the opposite side of alaska? don't you love how well-researched my ideas are? :|

perhaps this idea will not launch, but it's a fun to think along new pathways and if it gives me more motivation to save mad cash, hunky dory! the cheapest, remotely serviceable boat i have looked at on CL so far was $10,000.

in other news,

KMEC radio show is out, she said they are looking to cater to the majority in our area, which is hippies, and when i said, 'yes but a community is enriched when you represent it with a diverse range of music,' she replied, 'this isn't college radio, we don't want people tuning in for two hours just for one show and then tuning out the rest of the time.' we are talking a radio station with about 10 mile (at most) radius, and *no* sponsors. what a crock of shit. and the shows that are on there, SUCK. she also went on and on about how she had a degree in public broadcasting, blah blah, like that makes you a more intelligent person. unfortunately, eveyone i have spoken to about the place says the shows suck and the internal politics are worse. so, it is my summation that i am better off not dealing with that. i do however still want to do some sort of radio show.

along this vein, the 'date' never happened, he was too busy and i bailed on the jello thing. which is fine. i have learned in my life that when things don't come together, it is more often than not for a good, if subterranean, reason.

movie recommendation: THE LAST MIMZY. get on yer netflix account and order it up today, especially if you have kids!

back to seaweed work today, it was funny that the two guys working today both knew me from CALM...it is a small world. it's bloody hot (my thighs were slick with sweat after only 5 minutes of easy work today!) lately, but work is fun so i just keep soaking myself and it's ok. tomorrow i do the mendo herb fair with terry, sunday is the willits ren fair, and mon-tues back to seaweed.

finally, i get to start my herb classes with mary pat august 11-12. all that hard worktrade pays off at last! and college starts the 20th. i've dropped spanish and taken up tai chi (along with 2 bellydance classes, pilates, and yoga). my body is so excited!

i hope you are happy.</div>

reading bad writing

<div>what is it about awful books? i feel like i have made some sort of irreversible comittment when i am reading a book, so either i am 'still reading it' years later or i plow through it so i can get on with my life. you know what i mean? i can't just, set it aside and move on. i hope always that it will improve, though it doesn't. for example, this one i am reading now, a modern fairy tale called 'tam lin.' SHODDY, shoddy, SHODDY work! it's full of freshman college literati who are constantly quoting the classics to the extent that i think i have read half of keat's works by now and i'm only 2/3 through the book. but that's not the worst part. the worst is that the grammar, sentence structure, and punctuation are SO crappy that it distracts me from the utterly distractable storyline. so here we have a story that *could* be good, but the writer uses so many 'fillers' and the editors are so poor (oh and have a i bitched about the font yet? can hardly tell a comma from a goddamned period!) that i am having a quietly frenetic hour or two of reading on the sofa that is mainly me proofreading. now let me tell you, i don't read books to edit them. when i read, i want it to be impeccable. it's just my little peeve. why waste all those trees on bad writing? and then to top it, i keep thinking of how sad it is that the author obviously wrote this story and it was not easy for her. she gives us, in the foreword, a thank-you to her people who stood by her so gallantly, believed in her, etc., you know the claptrap. it breaks my heart that she has no idea how bad her writing is, or how bad her editor is. on the bright side, it gives me heart that if i applied myself i too could write a novel, if this is the sort of shit the public expects these days. hoorah!

back on the farm,

i got my transcript back from new college, and adam wrote me a letter inside (he was so sweet to send my transcripts free, waived the fee for me) and it was so nice to hear from him and also funny, as the last time i saw him was at molotov's on haight and we had decided to have an affair. no, i don't think we even kissed. it was just one of those, mutual admiration society things, he's quite funny and fun to hang out with. so he sent me hugs and kisses and i started thinking, you know, people LIKE me. they do. i have a LOT of friends. and i miss them. do you hear that, you friends? I MISS YOU!

in the meantime, i am downloading music like crazy, and i heard a really funny one on piratecatradio.com today, it's a song by libitina (who i had not before heard of) called 'gothic people.' omg. hilarious! so, again: please send me the names of your favorite groups, titles of songs, etc. so i can perhaps discover something new for myself and play it on the air. just do it already.
