Re: would really love if we could format text here bold colour (in Tribe.net Brainstorm) Yes. In general, _this_is_italicized_ and *this is bold*. I've been using these, and seen others using them, for 20-odd years, especially for scientific names of organisms, e.g. _Hapalochochlaena lunulata_.

PayPal moronitude

Although it isn't my primary address, I have a gmail account. I use it primarily for sending and receiving attachments, since my luddite shell mail client, wonder as it is, isn't so good at doing the attachment thing.

A few days ago, I got a "welcome to PayPal" message at my gmail account, followed by a payment confirmation for just over a hundred bucks for some specious weight-loss drugs. The payment confirmation had a name and address for someone in Kalispell, MT. Lovely. It was pretty obvious that they either typed in my address by mistake, or they intentionally picked a random email address... I'd guess the former.

PayPal also sent me a "veirfy your account" link. I didn't do that, but I tried to get login credentials for the account... no dice, I needed the credit card number. The verify-your-account link had no way of saying, "Hey, I didn't ask for this account."

First round with customer support. "We're sorry you're thinking of closing your account. Log in, click on the account tab, blah blah blah."

"It's not my account, you morons. Someone forged my email address."

"You need to contact your ISP. They recycle email addresses, and that's why you have a problem."

"This email address was not recycled. I just want it off the account."

"You need to contact your ISP about the recycled address."

Tilt. I called their customer service number, and went through the same thing this time in semi-realtime. "ISPs sometimes recycle addre..." "It's not a recycled address."

I got transferred up the line, wherein I repeated the cycle. At least this time he seemed to be able to actually parse English and figure out what I was asking, rather than just picking out a few keywords and reciting a canned answer. He says he's going to try to call her and get her to update the account... we shall see. Thus far it's taken me several rounds of email plus 30 minutes on the phone.

One of the really annoying things about this process is that everywhere I turned, they expected that I already had a valid account that I wanted to do something with... there was absolutely no concept of not having an account yet, or having an invalid/forged account. It was very annoying and stupid.

I'm not terribly impressed.

Home!

I'm home! I sent a text message to my ride just before we pulled into the gate. From there, we parked the plane, I hopped off, went through immigration, waited for my luggage, went through customs, waited for my ride, went across the bay bridge, and headed upstairs into my loft. I set my suitcase down precisely one hour after I sent the text message... not bad!

Flights are supposed to be uneventful, and mine almost was. I like listening to ATC during takeoff and landing, and it's especially interesting in very busy airports. Heathrow is especially cool because you hear all sorts of different accents. Our landing today was looking pretty uneventful, until I heard a controller tell someone, "go ahead and cross the runway, but quickly... there's someone on short final." A few seconds later, just as we're about to touch down, I hear, "United 931 heavy, go around." The engines roar, and the plane starts climbing again.

Charming, Mr. Controller, charming. You probably burned a thousand bucks worth of jet fuel with that little maneuver.

As we were turning onto base, the controller gave us instructions to do something (turn left, blah blah blah, then clear to land) and our pilot responded with, "This all sounds vaguely familiar." And as the controller was handing us off to the next guy, he snarked, "United 931, hope this is the last time I talk to you."

I ran into the pilot at the baggage carousel, and he was not the least bit amused by the whole thing.

I think I'm done with Tribe

I never thought I'd say this, but I think I'm done with Tribe. There seems to be nothing of interest left here.

I checked the site several times over the long weekend, and almost every time the only new messages where in the Brainstorm tribe-- they're just flamewars, trolling, and idiocy, with no real content. None of my other tribes had any content at all. Zip, zilch, nada. There seems to be no there here anymore.

ProtectMarriage.com seems to have a full-on Google assault today.

Every time someone clicks on one of their ads, they pay money to Google. If the ad is on Tribe, Google pays Tribe.

Let's help 'em out. If you see one of their ads on Tribe, click on it. Tell your friends to do the same. Let's cost the bigots as much money as possible.
