<div>it's pretty damned interesting to be living in an area not yet " owned" by any aspect of our social circle.

I get things like " it's just so far out of my way" when i invite people over...

Kids - i understand, i once felt this way as well.

However, i am a 7 MINUTE walk up from Market st. on Grant.
A measly 5 blocks away from Union Square. And, by the way, Chinatown and North Beach are like little tetris boxes with each other - intersecting and embracing. It took me 12 minutes to walk to Bimbo's !

That having been said, it's a different world over here. It's quiet at night, all the lights are off, and at 5 am, people start doing tai chi in the alleyways and the park by my home. There are artificial crickets chirping during the day, and that weird cello/violin thing they play is going most all of the daylight hours ( he's a busker... today he played jingle bells - including the " dashing through the snow" part. I was impressed. I called my roommate to tell him, as we'd been discussing having a battle with homedude on the harmonica, ukelele and tambourine)

My roommate is rather awesome. He's here about 1.5 days a week if he feels like coming down to the city, and spends 3 months a year in china. He practices choy lay fut kung fu and is fluent in cantonese. Yes, i am learning.
" nay ho ma" " lang loi ! ! " " nai cha!" " m goi"

thank you, thank you very much.

It's been a trip to watch my friends evolve, as we all know that i dont get out much. The crew that came around 7th and market is not the crew that hangs around chinatown. I'm pleased with the evolution ( not that i don't love you all, but... ). One maurader actually scaled my fire escape and woke me up from a nap knocking on my balcony door.

I am currently having some carpenters/ freestyle rappers build my loft in my bedroom/fabric storage area.
I also discovered 2 skylights and roof access.

just wait for gung hay fat choi. By then y'all are going to realize how close i am to everything you didn't even realize you love about this city and we're going to have the party to end all parties.

i know
i've not been posting
no pictures, no blogs, no nothing.

IT's not for having things not happening, but i have no DSL at home, and so i'm playing with my hamster instead.

I LOVE my new home " big trouble".

shockingly, i am living in chinatown, you see...
I am seeing someone. He lives a couple hours drive away. We're trying to work it out and haven't given up yet.

I'm happy.
I'm sleeping at night.

I'm partying a whole lot less, but have figured out how to make " chinese crack tea" ( the stuff they sell you at the bakeries that keeps you going for 6 hours) so i'm visiting the loo regularily and still staying up late.

My hair is growing

and i have bought many new shoes

feel free to text me.
Emails are also not so good right now and i am simply not responding to IMs as when i have internet, i don't have time to chat.

i love you all very, very much .</div>

She's the most hyper hamster you EVER met! I knew she was mine when i looked in to the cage and she was trying to chew through the glass . Seems to prefer her hind legs over the front ones. I took her out and she determinedly began to chew on my hand. I tried to feed her a sunflower seed but no, apparantly, Killer is carnivorous.

She also enjoys running on the OUTSIDE of the wheel.

I love her.

I'd like to invite you all over to meet my hamster. Next week i will get two more siamese fighting fish. i will call them fluffy.

I can make you smoothies ( i can haz blender !) and oatmeal ( i can haz kettle !)

and i can also offer you a shower.

Masking tape can come in very handy when you are a fashion designer on a deadline. Make that a four-and-a-half minute deadline, competing in front of hundreds of people.
Multimedia
Style WarsSlide Show
Style Wars

On Friday night at a TriBeCa warehouse along the West Side Highway, eight fashion design contestants relied on tape, scissors, staples, binder clips and large doses of creativity in the first national Style Wars competition, hosted by Mary Jo Diehl and Roman Milisic of House of Diehl, a fashion company the couple founded in 2001.

Neither professed to have had any formal design training, a fact that does not seem to have hindered the Croatian-born Mr. Milisic’s European flair and the native New York punk-lite aesthetic of Ms. Diehl.

The two declared themselves the inventors of “instant couture,” a combination of high fashion sense and a MacGyver-like ability to incorporate found objects into a wearable piece in a matter of minutes. They likened the competition to an old-school M.C. battle, with one crucial difference: “They spit out rhymes where these guys spit out style,” Ms. Diehl said.

The contestants, some in teams, were chosen from a five-city tour. All of the hopefuls, with the exception of two wild cards, won the contest in their home cities — New York, Miami, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Chicago — and came to New York to take home the title of Style Wars national champion.

The contest opened to the sound of a techno version of “The Imperial March,” Darth Vader’s theme in “Star Wars.” Contestants were given four and a half minutes to create a couture piece out of random objects and materials like sports equipment, medical supplies and denim, and had to adhere to themes like “Baby’s Got Back to the Future” and “Frump Me Amadeus.”

A panel of judges determined the winners based on the designs’ creativity and the contestants’ overall performance. “I expect it’ll be a bit loony,” said one judge, Mick Rock, a photographer best known for his photos of 1970s rockers like Queen and Debbie Harry. “It could be complete chaos and anarchy.”

Contestants were allowed to “stack the racks” by taking whatever materials they wanted onto the stage, and all goods were fair game for any competitor. After three rounds, a winner was named.

Backstage, the atmosphere was part circus tent, part runway show. Willowy models were primped to serve as live mannequins, while designers like the New York-based four-member team the ART corps, all dressed in hot pink, and Jahkyra Burr and Kayce Armstrong of Miami’s Art of Shade, who wore combat boots and military fatigue miniskirts, nervously waited their turn. A red-haired artist and designer known only as Domini, a wildcard entrant who had lost the San Francisco and Los Angeles competitions but was brought back for the finals because of her enthusiasm, seemed to be the underdog.

“I’m not really sure why I’m here,” said the artist, who is based in San Francisco and brought bubble packaging, bicycle tires and Chinese fans as her arsenal.

Once onstage, the contestants sliced pieces off the clothes on their backs and rummaged ferociously through the racks to create their instant designs. The results were impressive.

Karelle Levy, a Miami-based designer and performance artist, slashed into her multicolored knit jumpsuit for strips of fabric, while throwing a hot pink shawl over a skirt of bubble packaging she had spun around a model’s waist and legs. Domini used badminton rackets covered in T-shirts as wings for one outfit and turned an old suit jacket into a pair of jodhpurs by having the model put her legs into the arms.

Art of Shade used a Chinese lantern to create a skirt festooned with white flower-shaped lights and white wallpaper. One judge said the outfit was more “Home Depot than fashion.”

Domini made it to the final round, but lost to Ms. Levy, who, working to the theme of “Wed or Dead,” used sheets of X-ray film as a top, strategically placed cotton pads on the model’s hair bun and high heels, and turned surgical gloves into a large flowerlike shoulder appliqué in what proved to be an innovative use of medical supplies.

If all this sounds like the ingredients for yet another reality TV show, that is because it soon may become one: Video cameras were present at the event, and “Style Wars” the show is currently in development.

    </a>
<div>made it to the final round.

Nobody was more surprised than i was.
I think that i lost fair and square ( apart from the fact that the winner stole my things and used them in her piece, which pissed me off to no end)
But i got a lot of press, i had a good time, the camerawoman was so rad and i like her a lot. She now owns my black cashmere jacket with waffle sleeves and my brunhilde elf hat. I think that hearst media may begin to rock my gear in the future - time shall tell... Beckity also said that they got a TON of footage of me, which will be interesting to see if they roll the show out. Again, it's all about that flippin linear time now isn't it ?

the venue was PACKED. Stoli Hotel was pretty rad. Renegade club that opens up at random in random cities, only no longer because Stoli just got bought by Absolute.

I stayed alternately with my friend Brian in Brooklyn, and in this fantastically dope penthouse loft in TriBeCa. It was a fun, fun trip.

And in 3 hours, Virgin takes me home. I get the key to my new place and finish packing / begin to move. I had the craziest dreams about my new place all last night. About being in my new building with my folks and trying to figure out which loft space was mine. My key opened all of the doors. I made friends with everybody's pets but it took me FOREVER to find my home. Finally i did and discovered that not only do i have a shower ,but also a BATHTUB !

then i woke up and realized that this was not true. I also mentally toured Grant ( my new place, not the grant BUILDING, but my top floor 1500 sq foot space on Grant St. - CHINATOWN BABYYYYYYY!!!!!! yeah!) and realized that it wasn't the same place still. But i am good with that. I like my real space better than the one showing up in my dreams. I think that the dreams might have to do with the hamburger, fries and salad that i killed in the space of 7 minutes around 10 pm tonight. I was hungry. All that watching my weight for the show definitely deserved one good mad binge before we get back to normal. Oh, and MJ said she regretted telling me that i should lose some weight, which was nice to hear. I'll stop now. Thanks.

all in all

amazing

so much fun

and now back to the nitty gritty.

and if anybody can spare some time these coming evenings, it's time to give the mess a ride over to the new home of at least one Grant Designer.

<div>I am doing these things, with this stuff, on the spherical surface that we call the earth.
It is potentially exciting.

So i shall now

and we'll see how the sands shift.

In any case, next week, i could use a LOT of extra hands finishing the packing, and then helping with the unpacking at the new studio, as this whole NYC thing came up really suddenly and i have my SF life to keep steady. ( yeah, i'm TOTALLY the right one to keep something steady - you know me - Ms. EvenKeel 2008 ! hah !)</div>

<div>i've got the Z-trip rockin and i'm hobo sackin' that fabric like a maniac.

The night has been a consistent stream of angels coming to spend what time they had and it's been a huge, huge help.
God love Carlos and Joseph. Seriously. We watched footage from the Exploratorium and kept on revisiting the fact that we hadn't EVER rehearsed that piece. We've been working together so long that the trust and the connection was there, and it stuck like glue. And then there they are at my door tonight, with Vodka and Mixer and their ready hands. Sammity sam, Tiffy, even Rich came by. It meant so much.

The whole time, Will was standing at my cutting table, uploading the footage from 2nd Skin.

What a warm feeling that is.

It isn't done, by any means, but the pile of boxes in the hallway at the moment, the hobosacks of fabric on my shelves are pretty impressive, and i am not feeling exhausted or panicked. This is good.

Tomorrow at 6 am i'm on BART to the airport. I fly to seattle, then hop a puddlejumper over to Victoria to wish my dad a merry, merry birthday. I'd wanted to deliver him a whole quiche from Tartine but unfortunately they were all sold out, so he gets a piece of pain d'olives and a cufflink/tie/handkerchief set instead. My mum gets origami from stiffened fabric for mother's day.

And then, on Wednesday, it's off to NYC for Style Wars. I'm happy to meet up with MJ and Roman again, help them prep the final battle, then get my ass onstage and do my best for them. Their media has already been calling me asking for some background information... I had the funniest phone conversation with one lovely woman from a rather large organization outside of Jackson arms ( i learned how to shoot a gun on friday... thank you, thank you) and she kept on laughing and laughing- what was supposed to be 15 min turned in to 45 and finally we just told each other how excited we were to talk in NYC and got on with our impatiently waiting lives.

There is so much up in the air, and more are afoot. We'll see how it all shakes down. You meet people at least twice - once going up, and once going down, and i've been through this enough times that i hope to keep a level head; not start throwing weight around just because people are paying attention. IT's an ugly look, and i no longer want to play that role. But i am excited to see what may come to pass, and it's a pretty good feeling knowing that there is at least a chance to bring a message to a larger audience.

If i can take the " re-use" part of the three R's to a different level of awareness in our first world society, then for the second time in my life, i'll feel like i can die peacefully. That would mean that i've done my part. And maybe it could happen. And for the first time, EVER in my life, this year has brought friends to me who SHOW me that they care, and that's been the best feeling of all. I never had that before. I cant tell you how good it feels when people step up and help you. I'm excited to have the opportunity to pay that back to them. The feeling of being supported is just, so, damn, good.

Thanks, you guys.

really

thank you

you make my life something worth living.</div>

    </a>
										<div>ahem...

tap tap tap

( is this thing on?)

ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls,

as you may already know, i believe i have actually found myself a home.

( polite smattering of applause)

It's my dream home, i signed my lease on monday and they took $5000 of my hard earned dollars. It starts on May 15th.

Thank you, thank you. It was a long hard search with many high points and a couple devastating disappointments. But i think this one is going to be for real. I was standing outside of my building on Grant st. today and began to feel elated.

Moving is going to be hard. Y'all know my big swirling eddy of fabric and craft mess - and i've been here for two years. I also have to head to NYC for Style Wars, and so it's going to have to be a 2 part thing.

I'm hoping to get some loyal friends to come to my place on sunday night for pizza, tequila and packing.
From 6 pm onwards perhaps?

I leave for BC on Monday morning and return from NYC on the 11th, so that's pretty much cutting out a big chunk of moving date possibilities.

If you wanna earn d-money, here is a good time to do it. If you owe me trade, NOW IS THE TIME. MORE THAN EVER.

As for all of you who possied up and came to help weave the Odette dress, i'm grateful from the bottom of my heart. In case you didn't get the email, my plan is to ( once i've moved in and established myself @ the new Grant) have you all over for an appreciation night. I'm gonna either cook or order food ( dim sum anyone?) and have plenty liquor, then we shall take off our shoes, and walk a bubble wrap carpet in to my new workspace/showroom, where i will have a " free sale".

I'm basically figuring $10 in d-money per hour. It's redeemable anytime, but that night it's going to be more of a " just take it" situation. I can't begin to express how much i appreciate the extent that you have all come through for me in the past month and i want you to know that i'm going to get you back as soon as i've stabilized in my new, chinatown environment.

It's pretty cool - everyone i told today about my move went immediately to how my design will be affected.

Oh. Christ. Will it ever.

I'm already seeing chinese brocade pillowcase dresses for the summer - with those little pointy genie sandals they sell on the street.
And, of course, the lantern collection.

Stay tuned.

I feel good about this year of the Rat.

very, very good

oh, and i will get myself three new pets.
One dwarf albino hamster - i'm gonna call him Killer.

And two more Siamese Fighting Fish.
I'm going to call them Fluffy.

Not fluffy and fluffy, not fluffy 1 and fluffy 2
not even fluffy esquire the 3rd ( but fluffy for short)

they have one name.

they are fluffy.

Still got to a goodwill, did two sales, saw my gyro peeps, and hung with the current one who rocks my shit.

Yes i know - we shall see if this one lasts. There are slightly higher stakes, but i'm kind of cool with that.
I'm hella old now. I can deal with politics, and i know that in this particular game, i'm no pawn.

Anyhow i had an amazing weekend, with or without the new juice. And i believe that i shall do this again, with some kind of frequency, and gusto.

I'm not putting in any " collection" per se,

but what was birthed in my studio is pretty cool

four classical ballet costumes, made almost entirely out of trash.
Emphasizing the REUSE portiion of " reduce, reuse, recycle"

Odette, in a 6 pack wedding dress woven through with strips of plastic bag, and the wings that chained her,
Odile, the black swan, in pseudo cross dressing with cd headdress, and bicycle tire inverse hoop pants,
Coppelia, wearing the quintessential " bright idea" skirt and a 6 pack corset
and Sugarplum, in an industrial bubble wrap tutu, with images carefully inserted inside a number of the bubbles... and rhinestones for good measure, and the craziest innertube/six pack corset you ever did see.

The battle is on the 9th of may if anybody is around the city and wants to come check it out.

<a href="http://people.tribe.net/peanutgallery/blog/534fcd24-0ad2-4afb-b167-dc016171efa5"> <img class=" picThumb" src="http://images.tribe.net/tribe/upload/photo/f2b/50f/f2b50f4e-df5c-4fb2-bae9-3c8e81a0fba2.thumb" width="51" height="78" alt="" />
    </a>
<div>flew first class from LA to SFO ( Virgin offered an upgrade for $50 and hell... i was already ecstatic... what's another $50 after a $70 fare from cahuenga to the airport anyhow?)

My back doesn't hurt that much now, but goddamn i was a wimp when Mark had the gun to my skin. It was embarassing, to tell the truth, but when i look at the real estate he covered, i can understand how after a while it could have become somewhat traumatic.

Then again, Cisco got a butterfly on his goddamn NECK and you would have thought he was sitting, just doing the crossword. I felt like i let him down every time i flinched.

Every second was worth it. Not only do i have a STUNNING, amazing back piece in the works, and completed as far as the basic framework goes, i have the rarity of a back piece consistent with my heritage and upbringing... and i'm hell of proud of this. Even my dad ( my parents threatened to write me out of the inheritance if i got any more tattoos when i was 19) said that i looked like a cathedral and he liked my choice of subject matter.

Would i do the same again? I don't know. Probably not.
I didn't realize when i requested the pieta that i would not be able to enjoy doggy style in the light with abandon. Or that i would be so conscious of my rear view ( i.e. who is looking at the virgin mary right now and what are they thinking?)
But i finish what is started in desire, and i never half ass that shit.

And so now i have jesus, mary, matthew, mark, luke and john on my back, along with gargoyles from Notre Dame.
Am i a practicing roman catholic?
God no.

But if all of my Israeli friends can call themselves jewish, secular or not, then i get to call myself roman catholic.

And so that choice was simple.

As it is, i'm just so goddamn thrilled...
No longer will i look like i have some weird creeping black and white illustration rash. It's done now.

And it's fucking beautiful.

25 more hours to go over the next year to finish the rest of the shading i suppose.
That's gonna hurt.

( for the record, yes tattooing hurts. I'm not some freakish being who feels no pain. Why do people ask you if it hurt? Do they think i'm dead or something?)</div>

<div>i took my eight year old BFN to the exploratorium yesterday and we were practicing our hebrew... which turned in to many gibberish songs, which turned in to standardly known gibberish songs.

Then we had to get her home. Busses were busish, which was why we had to go to a bus stop to get the bussish busses...

and this song, my dear, we made up, and now i give to you

super cali fraggle mythic expiali dosh BUS!
even if the sound of it is something quite atrosh BUS
if you say it loud enough it's always sounds precoci BUS!

    </a>
										<div>
so... i realized today that unless i get some troops to help me out with my installation for the exploratorium, its gonna take me two weeks of tying six pack connectors together to make this wedding dress i have in my mind.

Anybody down to come over on tuesday night and help me for a few hours?
I can guarantee you food, drinks and booze, and possibly some D-money as well in credit for clothing.
If you have a hat from me and owe me hours, now would be the time to step up and turn in that time, for example.

If not tuesday, can anyone come over at a different time?

it's not going to be hard work, it's just lots and lots of knots.

thanks </div>

<div>my friend gordie was in my studio - we were makin' pants ( as we usually do)

and we came up with a stellar addition to the common vernacular

" you just don't under get me "

it works

add it in.
