Some Advice From an Agent of Mischief

I'm generally a 'live and let live' kinda guy who, though I have strong feelings, sentiments, and opinions, has pretty much kept my preaching to a minimum and usually only shared my thoughts with individuals or small groups of deep explorers or with my students of the Martial & Mandinga Arts. However, I find that I have some things to say which are based on my observations during my relatively brief time on this Earth and as a student of the Arts of War - of which 'fighting' is one of the baser, cruder, and remedial skill-sets. These things are things I feel are worth saying and worthy of others taking the time to close their noise-holes for a bit and listen to - carefully. Sound a bit arrogant? Well then, if confidence & honesty intimidates you or causes you to become reactive to the man, then you're missing the message.

Wanna explore some powerful pathways & knowledge and dive into some risky interactions & potentialities? Then linger awhile and open up your head bone, Strange, Earthly, and unlikely yet awesome interplays will shortly ensue...

How to gain Super Powers and a measure of Personal Grace - a Trixter guide to banishing Modern Feeble-minded Pretense:

1. There is a phenomenal difference between fighting and prevailing. Fighting is at essence a 2-dimensional oppositional dynamic where the person or situation before you becomes 'the problem' , or the obstacle - something that garners your focused attention as a thing to defeat & control, to resist & defend against.

Prevailing, on the other hand, essentially requires a 3-dimensional approach whereby you focus on succeeding rather then on contending - succeeding (winning) is a much maligned concept these days, often viewed in a negative light in the realm of education and society, but in a warrior paradigm it is a divine concept which means staying on your course or path and out-maneuvering all obstacles on that path. It is about the ability to keep the bigger picture of your real objectives in life in the fore-front of your attention, looking at things from above and below as well as straight on, allowing this then to inform your choices and actions and not allowing things to devolve down to 2-D confrontations and polarized resistances (often the source of frustrations, confusion, reactivity, and also stress and ill-health).

This 3-D approach means seeing things clearly and accurately while simultaneously becoming aware of how you may crap-out on your own energy, on your own psychic shielding and emotional equilibrium. Refusing to allow circumstances, situations, or persons to bait you into collapsing from your vision and inner balance. Learning to differentiate between the act of fighting and the act of prevailing is an essential & imperative idea to meditate on. it effects all things in the relative world, from interpersonal relationships, to how you approach life-developments, to how you exist in your very body.

A fixation on 2-D interactions in relationships of any kind, a need to defend, to control, to avoid, to resist, and especially to fight is very often a clear indicator that there is something going on with your ability to differentiate yourself. To develop a functional degree of personal autonomy, individuation, self-reliance, and integration that is fundamental to human adulthood. And these are crucially important aspects of becoming whole, becoming a vessel that can manifest and contain positive life energy and vitality. a prerequisite for personal power. This can be an end in and of itself, but it is also the foundation for moving out into the world 'miraculous interactions'.

2. Stop worrying about everything:
I mean it, just knock it off - no excuses. Gather yourself, your energies, and your meaningful connections and relations - those things that feed you and don't drain you, and cut off the rest. Indecision comes from the luxury of having too many options.

3. Come to an understanding about the difference between Restraint and Coercion:
Restraint is, at core, when you yourself cultivate a degree of personal control over your life's energies and resources - and it is an important, nay CRUCIAL aspect of the whole maturity thing that most everyone is avoiding at this time, in this age, on this planet. Think of restraint as the quality and capacity of drawing a circle around yourself to focus and forge yourself and to protect yourself and your dear ones from harm. If you come to a deep understanding about restraint you will have revolution in your understanding about the meaning of freedom.

Coercion, by contrast, is manifest when you wish to exert control over external events, dynamics and organisms to the degree that their inherent potentialities and energies are forced into subordination to your will - and past the basic predatory need for survival and a languid natural existence this exertion & application of control becomes an expression of your extreme immaturity. And get this straight: passive aggressiveness is a manifestation of a desire to coerce others to get your way out of them through ulterior means. It IS divisive and bespeaks of your inability to step up and stand on your own two feet. Own up to it already. Coercion is a puerile destructive & damaging activity and you need to put a stop to it right now and grow up.

4. Grow up:
Find a group of elders (ideally at least a generation older than you) of your same gender who have the qualities and intelligence and strength of character that you admire and wish to see in yourself and ask them to put you DOWN. (If you lack elders then find or manifest a group of age-mates) Have them come together as a group or work with you individually and to bring you - through stories, through conversation, through confessions, and through trusting impatient confrontation with you & your childish ways - to an intellectual and spiritual impasse, a place of no escape, whereby you must DIE. That immature, spoiled, selfish, self-centered, emotionally turbulent, impetuous kid gets itself finally and thoroughly killed-off so that the mature, centered, and powerful adult inside you can be born - the PC educated term for this is 'initiation' - but that word fails utterly to describe the extreme power of the transformation from one state of existence to another - a better term would by far be 'child-death'.

We live on a planet, in an age where there are so few actual adults out there that we are as a species drowning in our own immature bullshit. So do us, and your world, all a favor and get yourself wacked. A human child is only meant to have a lifespan of about 15 years before it is supposed to be put to ritual death (human sacrifice) by members of its family, community, or tribe so that the full human adult inside it can be born into the world. Its a risky business, but the payoff is amazing. If you find yourself to be 20 or 35 or 50 and this hasn't happened for you yet, don't fret, its not too late. Tremendous personal clarity and spiritual ease await you on the other side. But get busy bub, time's a wastin'!

And if you can't gather even one active mentor (not really surprising all things considered) to help birth you into full irrevocable adulthood, then the next best thing I can suggest would be to compose a 'magic' ritual for yourself and do the needed imagery, summon the ideals and qualities into your imagination, and when you've got it all together, and when you are just so completely sick of & pissed off at your own ridiculousness - then you take your first and second fingers of one hand, bring them together and form 'Gun Mudra' - place them in your mouth and pull the trigger. Its messy for all the ectoplasmic brain matter splattered all over the walls - but it can do the job nicely.

And interestingly enough, when an adult is born into the world it does not wail and cry like a child does, quite the opposite, it is eerily quiet and composed, a being whole for the first time. a rare beautiful powerful thing, like a unicorn, a yeti, or a sea monster.

5. Stop blaming others, and stop looking to others to save you - two sides of the same coin:
Putting the blame for pretty much anything onto anyone else (even Georgie Jr.) or looking to someone else to pull us out of the mess we are in (like so many zillions did with Obama) is forfeiting your self-sovereignty and making yourself out as a victim, as someone incapable of grasping the concepts of cause and effect and implementing them in your life. It is one of the single most dis empowering actions you can take. It destroys your personal energy and centeredness and makes you rigid, stubborn, and proud. But by contrast it also makes you meek and docile and easily led.

So this next bit is gonna sting (until you shoulder the burden): ITS ALL YOUR FAULT! If there is any blame at all, its all on you. If everyone around you is a child it makes no sense (and is completely ridiculous) to point fingers at them and get mad or frustrated, you just prove out your own childishness. Own it, all of it - take it on, sort it out, be the guide who shows the children how its done with this grown-up thing so they have a chance to figure it out for themselves one day.

6. Wake up.
Look, if you want to live in this civilization in a way that engenders a powerful, healthy, centered, and lucid approach then stop resourcing material goods, food, and energies (stuff, fuel, and debt) beyond your sight and touch. Its THAT EASY. If you can see what goes into your food & water then you are a hell of a lot more likely to chose food that has good qualities and nutrition and doesn't harm others. If your want to eat animals then stop buying that slaughtered ill-treated crap in the stores and arrange to get what you want from a local source - from animals you can go out and see and hear and pet. Best yet, take its life by your own hand & give thanks to it personally, looking the animal in the eye - this act alone will dissolve enormous amounts of pretentiousness. If you want new shoes and clothes and gismos free from the awful karma of slavery, suffering, and damage to nature - you HAVE to do this. It may seem limiting to a pouty child, but its certainly not to an adult - its called ' RESTRAINT' and it is the only real way to make a difference in this world as it currently stands.

And if you can' t get ALL you want through direct interactive means and cannot exercise discretion with the gismos and such that you purchase, then - honest-to-gods - you should offer prayer and give thanks deeply - to the Universe and the part of it that is made up in the form of YOU for this brief duration of life.

Start immediately paying attention to the wake you leave in your passing - on all levels. Relationships, commitments, responsibilities, debts, obligations, conversations, purchases, the thoughts you think, and the attitudes you take on, etc'. (is it really necessary that that person know that you are right and they are wrong?) stop blowing your wad like a child and get over it - get over ALL OF IT - and start 'paying' attention - therein lies the roots of a great power.

7. Who you are or what you think you know is irrelevant - for if you don't know how to make fire from scratch, find potable natural water, build a simple and effective shelter outdoors, protect yourself, and scrounge up enough nutrition to keep you and your kin going out in nature - than all you know boils down to a domesticated pile of shit. You know the truth in this and you also know what it is inside you that wants to fight against this truth. Doesn't matter that you personally may never need these skills and knowledge, it matters that you have it - because to lack them is to live in the illusion of civilization's permanence & immutability (its only been around for 10 or 15 thousand years! And look at the state of things because of it!). And your ancestors as recent as a generation or two ago, and as far back as forever never suffered such a conceit. What's YOUR problem? Why are you so opinionated AND incapable?

remember: Gun Mudra!

I may add more to this or expand on it sometime soon, but as your Sensei of the moment, I can assure you that the above is enough to get you started, and definitely enough to make you interesting and worthy of notice to other adults who can help you on your life journey, if you are so fortunate as to cross one's path.

A bow to you from within the dojo.

about me
In the tradition of Vodoun (vodoo) Earth is located in the Middle World - a place refered to, aptly, as the Marketplace. - where everything that is a thing is up for Sale. So it is here in the Marketplace that we start our Earthly Adventure. Me? I'm just a tour guide, a humble servant and occasional trixter.

As a guide, teacher, comrade, and friend my objectives are pure & simple: With Axê and light I open towards creatively assisting my extended tribe and family in better realizing their potentials & passions, to ever more deeply perceive the impact their deeds leave into our environment - the body of our mother Earth - to pay attention to the wake they leave in their passing on all levels of existence in order to become more tight, efficient, and effective - to perceive and cultivate those latent potentialities which have been pounded out of them since birth - to heal from their traumas and wounds empowered - to then perhaps embrace their abilities towards creating greater degrees of liberating realization for themselves and others in a world often filled to the breaking point with obstacals, chains, cages, and toxins on so many levels - all of which have been set in their path by the mechanations of modern Western civilization and our own big fat fearful egos. To this end then to embark on a life of Adventure. This is the only path of power & dream for which I value enough to follow myself. This is a Calling past which I have no agendas, platforms, or ideologies.

I use a variety of arts to teach and guide and share with others in this Way. I have been extraordinarily blessed to be guided in these arts by some of the most profoundly adept & skillful masters I've ever encountered:

CAPOEIRA ANGOLA

What I've learned in capoeira angola regarding Nature and of worldly human society would boggle the average person's mind (one of its intended purposes actually). It is a powerful & perilous knowledge which comes complete with the know-how to use it - and as an instructor I use this knowledge creatively and tactically - to innoculate, vaccinate and elevate the minds and bodies of those who have come to me for guidence in learning the game. The roda of capoeira equals the roda of life.

As a Contramestre in the ancient Afro-Brazilian traditions of capoeira angola I have been taught for many years now by my mestre: the indominable, eloguent, rascally and wiley Mestre No (Norival Moreira de Oliveira) - guided directly by his teachings & magickal medicine to see and act with the eyes, heart, and sure-footedness of an angoleiro - to comprehend that any & all obstacles (a.k.a. challenges! a.k.a opportunities!) which manifest in our self-created paths need not be confronted directly with force, violence, or aggression but may be met instead with suppleness and penetrating sight, may be then unwound and outmaneuvered with guile, humor, strategy, and wit - - and ofcourse sorcery! All to achieve greater success and fulfillment in our lives - in tune with Nature.

CLASSICAL SAMURAI ARTS: TODA-HA BUKO-RYU
NAGINATAJUTSU / KORYU BUJUTSU

Through the Koryu Bujutsu of the Toda-ha Buko-ryu with my sensei: Ellis Amdur - I have learned to value & explore the real depth of ancient samurai culture, and learned the value of presence, of holding fast in my center within the ever-changing cosmos - and to do this with a measure of grace & dignity - Bushido guiding my steps and my spirit. Through the way of the sword I have been guided to deeply perceive how mind, body, and spirit (and sword) are one in the same - and how we can, on any scale, level, or magnitude - lose it all, or gain it all in an instant held within the ever-present here and now.

And, through some temporal vortex, if I'm ever caught on a Japanese battlefield 400+ years ago - I can kick some serious ASS!

A MEDICINE WAY THAT IS MADE BY WALKING IT
( prayer, song, dance, drumming, and laughter!)

With my dear friend and mentor of many years Beaverchief (Fred Jameson) A Pacific NW Coastal native healer and shaman (refered to by his family rather as ' indian doctoring') of the Lummi and West Saanich tribes who crossed-over back to Spirit five years ago today (6/8/01) - I was challenged often to follow my passions and dreams in every action, to better understand & appreciate the realities and challenges of native peoples, to find and explore the sensuous, the powerful, the healing, the magickal - and especially the humorous - in all connections to Spirit.

Just months before he crossed over to the realm of the ancestors Beaverchief opened a powerful medicine path for me which continues to steadily unfold before me as I mature into it. For many years as both mentor & loving friend he guided me continually towards experiencing the animate sacredness of place and the extreme relevance of the Ancestors to our lives. And to walk in Ritual as one walks in Life. He was always one of my absolute strongest supporters and advocates in this life, and I miss him dearly.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Here's an awesome link I just got wise to of some of Beaverchief's amazing traditional songs with drumming, a rock & roll arrangement, and also the Seattle Symphony: http//:www.thereallybig.com/marks.htm#bc

And though I have been blessed with a raucous and bewildering diversity of exceptional teachers & friends in this life - above all others - it has been these three warrior mentors, members of three seperate yet resonant ancient warrior orders, who have profoundly shaped the man I have become, my conceptualisation of the world (universe) I live in, and how I've come to believe unshakably, unreasonably, and joyously in the divinity of Nature and the human spirit. They've all expressed that they totally believe in me, and that is an amazing gift. It is their belief and enormous investment in me that challenges me daily - hourly - in every single extraordinary moment - to live my life fully and to reach out to others in turn. My extreme gratitude they have, I carry their light in my heart. And to them all - I acknowledge a great debt for which I am finally really beginning to realize: can only be paid forward.

OH, AND GETTING SET ON FIRE (and other groovy shit!)

As a performer I have always endeavored to move from this belief in Spirit and Nature - again: I bring this medicine to inspire others to the potentials of human capacity, diversity, creativity and connection to the miraculous - Its the same message whether it be through doing flips and tricks on screen or stage with my tumbling, dance, or martial arts, OR leaping off high buildings, bridges, and waterfalls or being set on fire in my work as an indie-films stuntman, OR singing-out my heart while kicking-out the deep tribal & traditional rhythms on the drums, or ofcourse - on the magickal magnificent berimbau. Same message, through mercurial means.

I work and play in service towards opening space & time into the here & now through ritual invocations of divine Spirit - all into this dream - let's awaken my friends and loved ones, let's activate! let's go! Vem 'bora!

Adventures In The Belly Of The Machine

My beloved dog Jupiter passed away on the last morning of the Summer (Wednesday Sept. 20th 2006) from complications arising from a serious long-term digestive condition she had since her first year. This past week she mysteriously became severely ill and in very short order totally lost it. I am torn to shreds and barely holding my shit together over this. My friends and loved ones have been very supportive and have helped me a lot. I just cannot fucking believe she is gone from my life. This... read more

In the first draft of my first ever book (which may actually get published someday if I ever figure out how to do that - its very different than actually writing - this publishing thing - so I've learned) part of my argument against civilization comes from a particular establishmentarian tactic for how free-range feral culture gets caught, processed, and metabolised by the State and it's minions and then broken-in to serve as mules for capitalist entreprenuerial enterprize and by the establis... read more

It is possible to get out of a trap. However, in order to break out of a prison, one must first confess to being in a prison. The trap is man's emotional structure, his character structure. There is little use in devising systems of thought about the nature of the trap if the only thing to do in order to get out of the trap is to know the trap and to find the exit. everything else is utterly useless: Singing hymns about suffering in the trap, as the enslaved Negro does; or making poems about ... read more

Well, okay, quick timeout in my war against civilization to acknowledge the whimsical and fleeting joys of participating in the establishment.

Over the last few years I've worked performing and/or coordinating stunts on many film projects and FINALLY one of the bigger one's came out. "The Sisters" - In this film I doubled Eric McCormack (Will of tv's "Will & Grace") and had to wrastle with another cat who was doubling for Chris O'Donnell (Robin of the film "Batman & Robin", etc').

This man will fool you into thinking he is a student...but he is equally just as much a teacher. As I can relate to his Gemini ways, they are a strong quality of his persona and spirit. Not much of a weakness at all, but the core of his strength. He will help you light (and/or re-light) fires within, re-kindle your inner peace, and Respect-Respect-Respect everything and everyone. Vocabulary is large and his storytelling is entrancing. LISTEN my comrades. Loose your ego and enjoy the ride. Perere (or Erick, as I know him) is gentle and warm- he has been a wonderful acquaintance of mine since my arrival to Portland. I look forward to more interaction with this guy...

Namaste

Love the addition my brother.....you hold the key! Insightful and absolute TRUTH.

Mestre Perere is definatly considered a hero by me. I unfortunatly haven't had many opportunities to see him yet, but the few times I have really meant a lot to me. He's the person who really raised my interest in the art. I already was quite interested, but after my first workshop my interest was raised to a whole new level. I think I've learned a lot from him in a rather short time span. Not just about Capoeira, but he makes me think about life in general. He was one of my big influences in a recent decision of mine to become a vegetarian for example. He is a truly unique, interesting and amazing person that I am honored to be associated with. I hope I get the chance to spend many days with him in the future, Perere is the man!

Vive Meu Mestre
Perere is a living example of 'living outside the box'. Y'see, boxes not only can't hold him, he continually helps collapse boxes for other people and throws them back into the pop culture recycle bin.
When I first started training with Perere, I was transitioning from a contemporary style of capoeira and knew there had to be 'more' within the art to utilize as a vehicle for change. Shortly after connecting with Perere, and seeing him as a living example of one who truly makes their own way in this world, I was presented with the unique opportunity to apprentice with him in the Angola tradition as passed on by Mestre No.
He’s not only a guide, but good friend who has the uncanny ability to relate the lessons of Capoeira Angola to all aspects of life. He is able to take the complex and abstract and relate it in an understandable way. He couldn’t care less about capitalizing on his artistic endeavors, only wishing to reach those who appreciate the things he has. I am pleased to call him a friend

I think the first time I met Contra-Mestre Perere was maybe in 2001 in Iowa City. Unfortunately the only time I've spent around him has been about 5 weekend workshops, but even just those short periods of time have had pretty big impacts on me. When I first started learning Capoeira here in Omaha I really had no idea what I was getting into, but the more I learn the more I love it. It wasn't until I started learning from CM Perere that things started really clicking, so I'd say he's played a huge role in helping me realize that this art is something I'd like to keep in my life. The workshops with CM Perere are always filled with great instruction on all kinds of awesome movements and strategies in the roda and in playing music, interspersed with awesome thought-provoking, informative, and often inspirational lectures/rants/whatever you wanna call 'em. I was pretty excited to discover that not only is he into a lot of the same kinds of ideas/writers/etc. that I am, he has ways of relating it all to Capoeira and providing all kinds of interesting ideas to ponder. He's probably my favorite person to watch in the roda and I think he's the best berimbau player and maker I've met. Thanks!

aloha kakou,
my name is vingativa and i have been an aluno of contra mestre perere's since about 1999 (wow! has it been that long) anyway i wanted to take a moment to send some positivity vibes out for my teach. contra mestre perere is definitly one of the most influential people in my life (next to my fiance, and my fam). he's taught me how to see the world and all that it has to offer in a way that you can't learn anywhere else. he's fo' sure one of biggest reasons that i am who i am today. but let me get to the point of this post, when it comes to capoeira/capoeira angola whatever, contra mestre perere definitely has the goods. his knowledge and understanding of the game and it's ritual, music, history, and folklore are second to none. he possesses and technical understanding about the game and it's movements that to this day continue to astound me. but not only does he understand but he also has a great ability to convey and teach in a way that truly helps you to not only learn but to understand. so i guess that's it from me. word to big bird!

ie, viva meu mestre,
