Buddhism may be good for your mental health.
Scientists say they have evidence to show that Buddhists really are happier and calmer than other people. Tests carried out in the United States reveal that areas of their brain associated with good mood and positive feelings are more active. The findings come as another study suggests that Buddhist meditation can help to calm people.
Researchers at University of California San Francisco Medical Centre have found the practise can tame the amygdala, an area of the brain which is the hub of fear memory.
There is something about conscientious Buddhist practice that results in the kind of happiness we all seek They found that experienced Buddhists, who meditate regularly, were less likely to be shocked, flustered, surprised or as angry compared to other people.
Paul Ekman, who carried out the study, said: "The most reasonable hypothesis is that there is something about conscientious Buddhist practice that results in the kind of happiness we all seek."
Brain activity
In a separate study, scientists at the University of Wisconsin at Madison used new scanning techniques to examine brain activity in a group of Buddhists.
Their tests revealed activity in the left prefrontal lobes of experienced Buddhist practitioners. This area is linked to positive emotions, self-control and temperament. Their tests showed this area of the Buddhists' brains are constantly lit up and not just when they are meditating. This, the scientists said, suggests they are more likely to experience positive emotions and be in good mood.
"We can now hypothesise with some confidence that those apparently happy, calm Buddhist souls one regularly comes across in places such as Dharamsala, India, really are happy," said Professor Owen Flanagan, of Duke University in North Carolina. Dharamsala is the home base of exiled Tibetan leader the Dalai Lama.

in Boston, MA
Fellow AE911Truth Supporters:
1. We are going to attend and be active at the 2008 National AIA Convention in Boston, MA in force! Join us as we bring the 9/11 Truth to the 25,000 architects that the AIA expects, all collected in one place (of course for the purpose of being woken up to the truth about the destruction of the 3 WTC high-rise "collapses" on 9/11!). You can get your free pass to the concourse here.
2. We will gather May 15, 16, and 17th at the Boston Convention Center and commence to pass out leaflets inside and outside of the concourse. We will also have mini-presentations and Q&A upstairs in the hotel room at 10am, 12pm, 2pm, and 4pm to invite the architects to. We will also get attention by being filmed on large video cameras on the exhibit concourse with hundreds of architects passing by and wondering, "What's all the fuss?". You will hand them leaflets to quell their curiosity! The leaflets will tell them about AE911Truth, the mini-presentation schedule and the large AE911Truth event at MIT. The event starts Thursday morning and goes until Saturday afternoon.
3. Our first Annual East Coast AE911Truth Member Meeting will be held on Thursday night at 5:30pm at the Barking Crab restaurant (1 1/2 blocks from the Boston Convention Center). We will discuss where we've been and where we want to go, strategies for success, national organization, the slide show presentation, and get organized.
4. We will host a small group of MIT and other faculty in a 2 hour colloquium on Campus at 12:00pm on Friday in a classy, smaller room. (Only college professors are invited to this one)
5. There will be a large AE911Truth Speaking Event "9/11: Blueprint for Truth – The Architecture of Destruction" at MIT Friday night at 7pm in the auditorium in Bldg 54, Rm 100. Tell everyone you know in the area to come! The room holds 300. Help us poster all around Boston including MIT and Harvard!!
6. Architects for Social Responsibility (ADPSR) hosts the "Lewis Mumford Awards". A Free event on Saturday May 17th at 6pm - 9pm at the McCormick Gallery at Boston Architectural College, 320 Newbury Street, Boston. Come and speak to the professionals in a different setting.
7. Local Housing: The gracious members of Boston 9/11 Truth have offered to host us. Please RSVP immediately with Travis at
