Below are my photographs that document different music video shoots through out Kampala-Uganda, Nairobi-Kenya and Dar es Selaam-Tanzania. If the photos seem too dark, try increasing the brightness of your monitor.

NAIROBI KENYA:
I was shocked by the level of development of Nairobi Kenya. I had no idea that any city looked this way in Africa. The city looked like a cross between Washington DC and Vancouver but more beautiful, cosmopolitan and faster paced.

I find it interesting that you never see this side of Africa in main stream media. However, for all of Nairobi's beauty and majesty, she conceals a stunning crime rate which has earned her the nickname: "Nairobbery"

Dar es Selaam - Tanzania was like being in the Caribbean, with it's palm trees, white sands, turquoise water, hip hop music, laid back people and dj night culture without restrictions.

It's exactly what I've been looking for in a home.

GULU BLOG:
Dec 14th

We’re off to Gulu now. A quiet little town just four hours outside the capital city of Kampala.

It is home to the Acholi people of Northern Uganda who have been neglected by their government in the south and slaughtered by the the Lords Resistance Army in the north for the past 20 years.

In the wake of this war some 1.5 million Acholi’s have been displaced and forced into camps. These camps, set up by the government, for the Acholis’ “protection” from the LRA are far below humane standards of living and house mostly children. The war is now over and many of the people have left the camps, however thousands still remain.

We visited two of these camps this week and the population is almost entirely children.

Silas, Aaron and I drove up to Gulu, to record a song and shoot a music video for a group of teenage hip hop artists who wrote a song about the Gulu situation.

We recorded the song in a studio in Gulu city and shot the video in one of the refugee camps. It was the first time in years that any of the people in the camps had heard music and the first time ever for most of the children.

Below are my photographs of the music video being shot in the Bobbi camp. The video (directed by Aaron Elton) along with interviews we did, will be posted on the Bavubuka site shortly.

I’ve been in Kampala, Uganda East Africa for over a month now and am still getting used to life here. More on that later.

Below is part of a photo documentary I did for a benefit concert put on by Makerer University featuring some of Uganda’s top artists. Enjoy.

In the coming weeks I will be posting more blogs and images from the various projects we’re personally working on here as part of the “Bavubuka Project”. For those of you that don’t yet know, “Bavubuka” means “The Youth”

The Project, which was founded, by Silas Balabeyekubbo and Aaron Elton two years ago is a music and video production company which aims to give professional production and promotion to young artists in under developed regions of the world. By this, the project will be giving a voice to the ones needing to be heard the most.

The artists’ selected will be ones who deliver an uplifting and empowering message through their music, helping to create a youth movement that speaks out against corruption, tyranny and injustice.
