Serving, meditating, chanting, divinely loving,
My soul constantly hums, unheard by any;
God, God, God! "

Here on Earth

In an age of irony and irreverence, we still have a desire to believe. No one taps into our longing more than the Dalai Lama. Celebrated travel writer Pico Iyer talks about why the Dalai Lama matters and what lies ahead for the spiritual leader, globe trotter and simple monk.

More Hip Than Hippie Podcast

More Hip Than Hippie #147 - Pedal Power

It's bike to work week, so Dori and Val talk about the benefits of biking.

Beer and Chocolate:

Beer: Hop Ottin' IPA from Anderson Valley Brewing Company. Check out Boontling, a type of slang used in the Anderson Valley.

Chocolate: Dark Blueberry Fully Loaded bar by Hebert's Candies.

Hip News and Finds

Finds:

Hip News:
  • A lot of hot air. The Bush administration is urging the federal appeals court to set aside a ruling that gave states the authority to regulate greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Drink it up. Nalegene will stop using plastic containing BPA in response to the recent concerns raised by the National Toxicology Program.

Teenie Weenie Greenie™

This week's Teenie Weenie Greenie™ comes from Katherine in Barstow, California. Instead of using cotton balls, Katherine cuts an unused sponge into cubes. Just rinse them out when you're finished. They work just as well and reduce your waste.

Pedal Power

Steve O'Brian, owner of Pullins Cyclery here in Chico, stops by to talk with Dori and Val about the ins and outs of biking. Check out the links below for more tips and info.

  • Recycling school lunch trays. Charlotte wrote in about RecycleTech, a company that created a process that recycles polystyrene lunch trays into plastic that can be used to make CD jewel cases and more.
  • Forks, knives, and spoons, Oh my! Sara is looking for a good alternative to disposable plastic utensils. Val recommends stainless steel cutlery or bamboo cutlery.

Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company (events » arts) Friday, October 12, 2007 - 8:00 PM Blind Date
Los Angeles Premiere
Recognized as one of the most provocative and innovative forces in modern dance, choreographer Bill T. Jones and his celebrated company return to UCLA Live with another extraordinary work probing life’s big questions. Described by the International Herald Tribune as Jones’ “most urgently topical piece in years, and perhaps his most unambiguously political,” Blind Date is an explosive meditation on how far we’ve strayed from the Enlightenment ideals of tolerance, religious discretion and social progress in this current political climate of toxic certainty. Featuring an international cast of dancers from Turkey, Mexico, China and beyond, Blind Date is a multi-layered dance theater experience that is “at once moving, sexy, funny, thoughtful, and sad” [The New York Times]. Composer Daniel Bernard Roumain’s eclectic score features works ranging from Bach to Otis Redding to the Mexican national anthem.

I have seen Mr. Jones on three different occasions starting when it was just he and Mr Zane which proved to be a riveting night of dance. On another night Mr. Jones mother and he had a dialoge on stage. The dances are very thought provoking and at the same time fluid and beautiful. I heartily recommend you go and stimulate the senses.

Idyllic Music

Idyllic Music Episode One Hundred Eleven: The Orb Special
This week, we'll feature the music of the Orb. Of all the bands that inspired us and helped formulate the scope of this program, it was The Orb's determination to move the mind as well as the hips. Blending the pioneering electronica of Tangerine Dream and the beats of Chicago's warehouse scene with the deep dub of scratch Perry and Byrne and Eno's Bush of Ghosts sampling, The Orb remain a central pillar of today's electronic music.
