SaveOceanBeach.org - needed letters to rudy WITH SOLUTIONS
Have you heard about the proposed ban on fires at ocean
beach. Any ideas? Or places to send it out? Here are some
ideas proposed by folks who want to preserve our right to
assemble freely.
- - - What's needed: - - -
Positive solutions for preserving our right to assemble.
Clean fuel: clean wood. No particleboard or plywood. No painted or treated wood. No Nails.
NO GLASS ON BEACH. Get involved; pick up trash and bottles.
See a fire with nails? Drag the ashes with a magnet. Leave no trace.
We are facing a ban on fires because of careless and / or inconsiderate behavior of litterbugs and drunks.
If you care about 1st ammendment right to assemble you may see the importance of keeping a clean site.

this is a big deal and about to
happen if something isn't done.

If you have ever enjoyed a fire on Ocean Beach, you'll want to take a
minute to read this. The GGNRA is about to completely BAN FIRES on
Ocean Beach. This will take effect on April 15 if we don't do
something.

Take a minute and go here:

www.saveoceanbeach.org/

You can write a letter or send an email to the decision makers on why
you think the ban is a bad idea.

Marin's Free Store (san rafael)
We've started a little 'business' here in Marin called The Marin Community Exchange, where everything is free. That's right, you can get a desk, a jacket, computer parts, blender, toaster, shoes, you name it, and not pay a cent. That's because people donate what they're no longer using. It's all about saving the environment as much as we can by reusing things you'd otherwise buy new. This saves manufacturing, packaging and shipping, and of course helps reduce global warming and pollution. We've redistributed $30,000 worth of things in our first month. Come help do more! We're at 185 Marinwood Ave, San Rafael. The phone is (415)499-5123. Here are more details:

Re: masks
I read that masks are only a bandade. They won't work against the
bird flu because everyone's germs are all over the outside of the mask
and as soon as you accidentally touch the side of mask facing the
public and rub your eyes or touch your mouth, there you go, you got
the flu. Plus, you would have to "glue" it to your face so as not to
leave any little space where germs can enter.

Film—What I have Learned about US Foreign Policy
Humanist Hall 390 27th St (between Telegraph and Broadway) Oakland
globalexchange.org/getInvol...yarea.php

# WAR AND HOPE

FREE FILM FESTIVAL

every Wednesday of April at 7:00 pm at the Humanist Hall, 390 27th Street, at Telegraph and Broadway, Oakland: (510)704-02-68

April 5th:"What I Have Learned About the US Foreign Policy: War Against the Third World" is a very eye-opening and deeply disturbing compilation of documentaries about the CIA covert operations in the last 50 years, the School of Americas in the US where terrorists and assassins are trained, the invasion of Panama and Guatemala, the reality of sanctions in Iraq and much more.

April 12th:"Arsenal of Hypocrisy" is a documentary about the Space Program and the Military Industrial Complex. The origins of the Space program date back to Hitler. Unfortunately, today’s Space Program in the US represents similar goals and values. NASA that many Americans associate with advancements of science has been taken over by the Military. Militarization of Space is above all about surveillance of the citizens on this planet (the level of their technology will astound you). It is also about military domination of the planet and about denying all other countries access to the resources of outer space.

"The Battle for America’s Soul" is also produced by the Global Network against Weapons and Nuclear Power in Space. Bruce Gagnon gives a presentation about the dependency of the people in the US on the Military Industrial Complex for jobs. This is a real rude awakening. Bruce talks about creating alternatives to this dependency.

April 19th: "The Money Masters" is a very extensive 4-hour documentary about the history of money and how it became monopolized by the private English bankers. Like any commodity that is monopolized money is being used as an instrument of merciless control and exploitation. The US has never really broken free from that control. Every president who tried was assassinated. After seeing this film you will see the entire history of the world in a different light. The English banks who seized control were sponsoring opposing sides in world wars and are to this day dominating and exploiting every one of us. "Federal reserve" is neither "Federal", nor is it a "reserve". Come by and learn the secrets the global elite has been fiercely hiding from you for centuries.

April 26th: "A Force More Powerful" is a 4-hour documentary about non-violent revolutions and social movements all over the world. It is incredible what people can achieve when they decide to take back the power. This is the most empowering and hope-giving documentary I have ever seen. Everybody needs to see this film!

# THU 4/6 7pm G.I. resister film, benefit: Sir! No Sir!
I hope you'll come out to see this amazing and important film! It is the untold story of the GI movement to end the war in Vietnam and tells a part of history that has been forgotten, about the conscientious objectors, underground newspapers and coffee houses, of those who resisted in many ways. It is a powerful glimpse of both history and of the present and future. In addition to meeting vets featured in the film and modern day resisters on April 6th, there will also be talks featuring these folks, the director David Zeiger, and members of Bay Area peace groups after all the screenings during the week run at the Red Vic April 7-13th!! Finally, we need your help and support to get the word out in NYC where the film will be at the IFC for a week April 19-26th. There are some 30 cities around the nation that are waiting to see how the film does in NY. If news of this movement is to reach the heartland of the USA we MUST sell out all the shows in NYC. If you or someone you know has contacts in NYC please email celia riseup.net for an email blast about the NYC screenings!

Music

BLVD
Lowpro, Blvdsource.com
Drummer/producer Dylan McIntosh's bodyrocking breakbeats and Tripp Bain's bumping basslines lay a deep low-end foundation below the spiraling melodies of guitarist Curtis Sloane. Add in hypnotic feedback loops and beguiling sonic effects, and you've got a dynamic mix of breakbeat, house, and dub that carries dancers into uncharted territory and keeps them there all night.

Laird
Get YER freak on!, Djlaird.com
A name you will often see attached to the most raging parties in the Bay, Laird's breed of funky breaks keeps dance floors moving well after the sun comes up. Recently voted onto SF's top 10 DJ list the 2005 DJ Dream Team, Laird is famous for spinning psychadelic breakbeat, space funk, house music, and he is one of the masterminds behind Golden Gate Recordings. When he's not releasing tracks on OM Records, or inciting riots, Laird likes to wear cowboy hats and shake his leg.

J.Tonal
Lowpro, Jtonal.com
Cofounder of Lowpro Lounge, J.Tonal has performed and produced shows at such venues as the Nuyorican in NYC, the Middle East in Boston, and the Royal Oak Ballroom in Detroit. He has played with such notable musicians as DJ Shadow, Tino Corps., and Goa Gil. As resident bad boy and live-pa crunkologist, J.Tonal brings it hard with a dirty, beat driven mix featuring melodic influences ranging from the classic to the experimental.

James Christopher
& Audio Angel
Lowpro, Audioangel.org
James Christopher, a longtime resident DJ at Atlanta's D&B weekly "Sessions," co-founded the Lowpro Lounge and has performed with members of Sound Tribe Sector 9, the Santa Cruz Hemp All Stars, and DJ Logic. James Chris can often be found performing with Audio Angel, without question, THE diva of San Francisco drum and bass. She performed with James Christopher in the jungle band Rootscience, and has recorded and performed with Sound Tribe Sector 9 regularly. Sweetly layering her voice with the drum and bass sound you question whether the vocals you are hearing are the sounds of an Angel.

They are training the women to collect seeds, work in the nurseries, study and grow native medicinal plants, tree grafting, and to build fuel efficient “justa” stoves.

The mission of the women of Rosas de Volcanos is to “emancipate women through education, so that we may work alongside the men, and together forge a better future for our families. We are aspiring to create a more dignified life, equal, independent, in harmony with nature and human society, defending the rights and duties of women and children. It is our goal to become future permaculture educators so we can teach both in our community and to neighboring communities.”

In this spirit of empowerment, sustainability and reaching out to neighboringcommunities, we are organizing a party and silent auction in San Francisco to raise money in support of this program. The Wilder Institute’s fundraising goals are reasonable, needing only $20,000 to fund their efforts for 2006, and they are halfway there. They have pledged to use their resources responsibly, frugally and with the passion they have for their work.

Please consider supporting this amazing program, actively making a meaningful impact, by contributing an item for the silent auction. E-mail directeffect@sodope.com if intereseted.

Items for the auction will soon be available for on-line viewing

Reception and Slide Presentation
CIIS Minna Street Center 695 Minna Street @ 8th, San Francisco
Lynn Creighton is a ceramic sculptor who has studied shamanism and led Native American purification lodges, prayer dances, and vision quests for many years. These parallel journeys to knowledge have created the opening for her to understand and celebrate the feminine through form and ceremony. Creighton currently teaches three-dimensional design at Moorpark College and ceramics at California Lutheran University. Her work has been exhibited throughout the United States, as well as in Japan, France, and South Africa. In Reclaiming the Sacred Source, Creighton has created bronze female figures that express exuberance and divine appreciation.

To Bethlehem and Beyond: Celebrating Nonviolent Resistance
An audio-visual report-back from Jim Haber, recently in Bethlehem for the "Celebrating Nonviolent Resistance" conference in late December. Almost 200 internationals and 200 Palestinians, along with 30 or so Israelis who came illegally, discussed the oft ignored history of nonviolent resistance worldwide, and in Palestine and Israel in particular. He also visited Palestinians and Israelis from Hebron to Jenin to Tel Aviv during the recent election campaigns.

Opening for Mr. Haber will be musical selections by Mokai, local singer/songwriter. Putting a twist on traditional folk and folk blues styles, Mokai accompanies his soulful vocals with powerful grooves and smokin' blues riffs. (mokaimusic.com)

# The Celestine Prophecy - The Movie - Sebastopol
Friday, April 7, 2006 and Saturday, April 8, 2006 7:30 PM
Based on James Redfield's worldwide best-selling novel, The Celestine Prophecy is a spiritual adventure film chronicling the discovery of ancient scrolls in the rainforests of Peru. The prophecy and its nine key insights predict a worldwide awakening, arising within all religious traditions, that moves humanity toward a deeper experience of spirituality. The film features an international ensemble cast including Matthew Settle, Thomas Kretschmann, Sarah Wayne Callies, Annabeth Gish, Hector Elizondo, Joaquim de Almeida, Jurgen Prochnow and Obba Babatundé.
Using an approach that is part adventure tale, part parable, and imbued with intriguing and exhilarating music, the film tells the story of John Woodson (Mathew Settle), whose life is at a crossroads. He is about to experience a dramatic and profound metamorphosis. Through a mysterious set of coincidences, he finds himself on an adventure to Peru in search of ancient scrolls, known as the Celestine Prophecy. Resistant at first, skeptical and unsure, John finds that with every step he takes, each person he encounters leads him to a new understanding. It is only in this letting go to a higher consciousness that he uncovers life's true purpose and his own destiny. Held at:
Harmony Community Room 400G Morris St. Sebastopol, 95472

WHAT IS THE BIOTECH INDUSTRY ORGANIZATION?

The Biotech Industry Organization (BIO) is a group of the world’s
largest
agribusiness, pharmaceutical, financial and biodefense corporations,
along
with various representatives from governments and academia. Each year
they
hold a convention in a different U.S. city, and this year they picked
Chicago. Some 15,000 BIO delegates will be descending on Chicago’s
McCormack Place Convention Center from April 8th – 12th.

The BIO convention will bring to Chicago an unprecedented public
relations
bonanza promoting biotech and genetic engineering. But what BIO really
represents is a global system of agriculture that is dominated by a few
agribusiness corporations – from genetically engineered seeds, to
pesticides, to the table. BIO will downplay the fact that so-called
'biodefense' research is equally applicable to offensive bioweapons
development, and that massive new U.S. funding for bioweapons research
may
be spurring a new biological weapons arms race. Pharmaceutical
corporations at BIO will continue to ignore the crisis in healthcare
access, and focus instead on futuristic treatments designed to attract
investors and, when they succeed, provide mainly for the wealthy. Their
website is www.bio.org

WHY RECLAIM THE COMMONS?
The Commons are the universal heritage of people and all living things.
They are everything needed to support healthy life on earth: air,
water,
food, shelter, health care, seeds, and our genes. They are what is
needed
to sustain culture: our multicultural heritages, education, information
and the means to disseminate it, essential human services, public
spaces,
and political space. They are equally the land, its forests, the
oceans,
and all ecosystems. In sum, the Commons are everything that we inherit
jointly and freely, and hold in trust for future generations.

Reclaim The Commons 2006 will shed light on big biotech’s attempts to
expropriate and claim hold to vast areas of the Commons that belong to
us all.

These include:

Agricultural heritage: Since the beginning of agriculture, farmers and
gardeners have been saving, developing, caretaking and replanting seeds
from the plants they grow. Genetic engineering threatens this basic
right
for farmers worldwide, placing control and ownership of seeds into the
hands of corporations. RTC opposes genetic engineering and corporate
control of agriculture, and supports sustainable local food systems and
local food sovereignty.

Life Itself: Corporations are also attempting to assert control over wild
plants and animals by recording and then patenting their genetic codes.
In fact, over 4000 patents of human genetic codes have also been approved.
RTC is dedicated to the proposition that life cannot be patented.

Food: Independent feeding studies have documented underdeveloped
organs, signs of cancer, allergies, and high mortality in rats fed genetically
engineered (GE) feed. Government and industry have done little substantive
health research on GE products. Most people don’t know that over 70% of
processed foods now contain GE ingredients because there is no labeling
requirement. RTC calls for a stop to this contamination of our food
supply, and for universal access to safe, affordable, healthy food.

Healthcare: The largest pharmaceutical corporations in BIO - Merck,
Pfizer, AstraZeneca and others - can boast some of the highest profit
margins in the corporate world, while basic medical care is
unaffordable
for millions of people in the US and billions elsewhere. The futuristic
biotech research promoted by BIO may attract investors, but it will not
solve this basic healthcare crisis. RTC advocates for universal access
to
good healthcare.

Biosafety: In the last few years the U.S. government has dramatically
increased funding for research on biological weapons. New labs that
create
and handle genetically engineered diseases are being built in and near
several urban areas, posing potentially disastrous risks. The research
is
billed as biodefense, but can easily translate to offensive
applications.
RTC calls for a stop to the development and testing of biological
weapons.

Ecosystems: By raising genetically engineered crops and animals in the
open, biotech corporations are endangering the Earth’s ecology and
ecosystems. Examples are genetically engineered trees, alfalfa, grass
and
salmon – all of which can contaminate wild populations through
cross-pollination and cross-breeding. Simulations have shown that this
sort of contamination could have devastating effects on natural
ecosystems. RTC opposes the release of genetically engineered organisms
into the environment.

Science and Academia: Pharmaceutical and agribusiness corporations
largely
control and often are the sole beneficiaries of research done at public
universities in the U.S. When it comes to regulation of biotechnology,
the
same people are found to rotate between corporate and government
positions, providing corporate-friendly assessments when serving as
regulators. RTC calls for a stop to the revolving door between industry
and government, and for independent research at public universities.

Reclaim The Commons supports and celebrates the complex, diverse and
wondrous ecosystems of our planet that make life possible, as well as
the
gardeners, farmers, farm workers, scientists, healthcare workers,
activists, indigenous people and all who are working for a just,
democratic and sustainable future.

# victoriasdirtysecret.net April 11th National Day of Action
Join our April 11th National Day of Action to expose Victoria's Dirty
Secret!

www.victoriasdirtysecret.net/act...nter

Approximately 395 million catalogs are mailed by Victoria's Secret
each year--that's more than one million a day! Most of these catalogs
end up in the trash or at best in the recycling bin--often without even
being looked at. Paper for these catalogs is destroying Endangered
Forests like the great northern Boreal Forest of Canada.

Canada's Boreal Forest is an area over 12 times the size of
California, representing 25 percent of the world's remaining intact
forest. This globally significant forest is one of the largest carbon
sinks in the world, making it vital to regulating our changing climate.
Its lakes, rivers and streams are also the largest freshwater system on
Earth. For more information, go to the ForestEthics Boreal page .
www.democracyinaction.org/dia/track.jsp

Despite its global importance, over two acres of the Boreal are being
logged every minute, mostly through clearcutting. The tragic part is
that the Boreal is being clearcut to make disposable items like
catalogs for companies like Victoria's Secret, which gets at least 25%
of the paper for its catalogs from the Boreal Forest. Other materials
for Victoria's Secret products comes from other Endangered
Forests--like their paper bags, which are made from paper coming out of
the Southeast United States.

Because of its immense buying power, Victoria's Secret is in a
position to help change the catalog industry toward sustainable paper
purchasing. Unfortunately, the company has refused to make such
commitments to protect our Endangered Forests. So we're calling for an
International Day Of Action on April 11th and we need your help.

What can YOU do?

To get involved, add your action to the list, and get fact sheets,
postcards, or other materials for your event, go to
www.victoriasdirtysecret.net/dayofaction , email
catalogs@forestethics.org , or call 1-800-725-0087.

JOIN US ON APRIL 11th to protect Endangered Forests from Victoria's
Secret's destructive practices.

# Wednesday, April 12, 7 -- 9 pm: Blogging and Podcasting -- An Exotic Dancers Education Project Workshop with Melissa Gira

CSC, 398 11th Street @ Harrison

NAKED IN PUBLIC: Blogging & Podcasting for the Brazen & Brave.

Adult entertainers and erotic professionals have been pushing technology on the web for over a decade, telling our stories and being among the first brave enough to get naked online not just for profit, but our own pleasure, too. Now, with the growth of blogging & podcasting, we have simple, powerful tools with the potential to take our freedom of self-expression even further.

So, have you always thought about starting a not-so-secret smut diary, and maybe meeting some like-minded bare-all writers? Have a voice like honey and a filthy mind ready to let loose with some audio erotica, but you just don't know where to begin with all that tech stuff? Want to learn how you can keep some privacy while getting naked on the web, and cover your bases when it comes to creating sexual content online? Spend two hours with sexy geek Melissa Gira exploring free content creation and management tools, getting hot and bothered over cheap gear, and talking about how to get the most out of putting your erotic self out there on the web for all to read, hear, and (hopefully) passionately bookmark and blog about.

Melissa Gira is a writer, multimedia artist, and web-based woman of pleasure. Her blogs are Sacredwhore.org and Sexerati.com. You can find her podcast, "whorecast," currently enjoying a spot between Barack Obama and Sean Hannity in iTunes' Top Ten Politics podcasts.

This event is open to the public and all all welcome, regardless of experience or ability. You must be 18+ and comfortable viewing and talking about adult content in class. A laptop is recommended but not required. We will have some electrical outlets for your laptop but please try to charge it fully before you bring it to class. The building is equipped with wireless Internet access. If you don't have a laptop please bring a pen and pad for notes.

Advanced tickets are $10 each at
www.acteva.com/booking.cfm No one turned away for lack of funds. Free tickets available for exotic dancers who work or have worked for Deja Vu or who can't afford to pay. If space is still available the day of the event tickets may be purchased in cash at the door for $20 per person. So that everyone can feel comfortable to create: no cameras or recording devices, please.

Double Feature Presented by Gypsy
ARSENAL OF HYPOCRISY

This first film is a documentary about the Space Program and the
Military Industrial Complex. The origins of the Space Program date
back to Hitler and represent similar goals and values to those of his
regime. Many Americans associate NASA with advancements of science
for the good of humanity. In reality, NASA has been completely taken
over by the military. The militarization of space is above all about
surveillance of the citizens on this planet. The level of NASA's
technology will astound you This film is also about military
domination of the planet and about denying all other countries access
to the resources of outer space.

THE BATTLE FOR AMERICA'S SOUL

This film is also produced by the Global Network against Weapons and
Nuclear Power in Space. in the film, Bruce Gagnon gives a
presentation about the dependency of Americans on the Military
Industrial Complex for jobs. This is a real rude awakening. Bruce
suggests how to create alternatives to this dependency.

# Yes Yes Yes
Hello beautiful ones...

I am really excited to introduce you to my first series of Raw Food Hands On Instruction and Dinner Classes coming this April.
I have designed three scrumptious menus for classes that I will be hosting on three consecutive weekends in April. The classes offer a holistic learning experience where participants see the recipe preparation demonstrated, hear instructions, and participate in making the actual recipes. Finally, each class completes with the participants enjoying the three course meal they just prepared.

As some of you may know, I have a life long commitment to "Living my Life As a Work of Art." I am also committed to providing opportunities and support for others in doing the same. In addition to me being a Personal Life Coach and NLP practitioner, I am also a certified Raw Food Chef. In fact, Raw Food has been an integral part of my life since 1997 and I have found it to be an incredible enhancement to my experience of life. I am looking forward to sharing my knowledge about Raw Food and some of the gifts of the Raw Lifestyle with those interested. Check out my web site for more information.

America

Ruin, Rubble And Race:

The San Francisco Earthquake and Post-Katrina America,1906 to 2006,
One Hundred Years Later

Join a diverse group of community-based organizations and activists
for a "People's Forum" to commemorate and critically reappraise what
happened 100 years ago, and what must change today to save lives and
prevent displacement of vulnerable, working people from the city's
landscape.

Distinguished Emcee Bob Wing, Activist and Writer

Panelists Include:

CC Campbell-Rock, Katrina Survivor, Community Organizer, and Journalist

Willie Ratcliff, Community Activist and Editor of San Francisco Bay
View newspaper

Connie Young Yu, Historian and Author of Chinatown, San Jose, USA

Chris Carlsson, Board President, Counterpulse and Executive Director,
Shaping San

Francisco: An Interactive Multimedia Excavation of the Lost History
of San Francisco

Shanell Williams, Community Activist, Former SF Youth Commissioner

History has revealed that the 1906 Earthquake and Fire, and the
monumental, post-disaster rebuilding efforts, gave tragic rise to a
modern era of twentieth-century displacement and gentrification of
working-class people, immigrants and communities of color throughout
San Francisco. In 2005, the nation witnessed how Hurricane Katrina
and the government's racist and cruel response devastated the social
and economic conditions of these same communities in the Gulf Coast
region.

One hundred years later we ask: "What would happen if another
earthquake shakes up San Francisco? Who would survive? Who would be
displaced? And would the city be rebuilt for the wealthy, power elite
and corporations that dominant the debate?"

Join us for the discussion! This event is co-sponsored by the
Chinatown Community Development Center, Mission Agenda, The
Progressive Voter Project, Senior Action Network and the San
Francisco Peoples' Organization, along with Supervisor Chris Daly,
Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi and Supervisor Aaron Peskin.

This is a very thorough, extensive, and uncompromising four-hour
documentary on the history of money and how it became monopolized by
private English bankers. This film illuminates an inside track on
English banker families. Like any commodity that's monopolized,
money is being used as an instrument of merciless control and
exploitation. The U.S. has never really broken free from that
control. Every U.S. president who tried was assassinated. After
seeing this film you will see the entire history of the world in a
different light. The English banks who seized control from the
beginning were sponsoring opposing sides in both world wars and are
to this day dominating and exploiting every one of us. "Federal
reserve" is neither "federal" nor is it a "reserve." Learn the
secrets that the global elite has been fiercely hiding from you for
centuries.

PROTEST THE ARROGANCE OF WEYERHAUSER ON 4/20

Weyerhaeuser Annual General Shareholder Meeting (AGM) protest! Seattle Rainforest Action Group (SeaRAG) is currently planning a protest for the AGM.Protest planned for the Weyerhaeuser AGM in Federal Way, Thursday April 20th.

ran.org/what_we_do/old...p_weyerhaeuser/

Weyerhaeuser is one of the largest logging corporations in North America and it is currently clear-cutting ancient endangered forests throughout the world in order to produce office paper, paper bags, and lumber, even though there are clear sustainable alternatives. Weyerhaeuser continues to brush aside concerns about the effects of their logging on indigenous peoples in countries as close to us as Canada. They arrogantly fire workers in areas where their devastating techniques have exhausted a ready supply of timber, as they increase operations outside the US, using the same techniques that doom the Earth and economically vulnerable people alike. Adding insult to injury, Weyerhaeuser has given themselves a greenwashing!

Seattle Rainforest Action Group is planning a protest on Thursday April 20th at this unethical company's Annual General Meeting to make noise for all the unheard voices that Weyerhaeuser has silenced. Show Weyerhaeuser and its shareholders that we will not stand for attacks on the environment, on indigenous peoples' rights, on future generation's resources, and Washington workers by coming to the AGM on April 20th. To volunteer or for questions, contact eskie

Wake Up Weyerhaeuser!

Rainforest Action Network and a global movement of grassroots activists and allies are targeting Weyerhaeuser, one of the world’s largest and most destructive logging companies. Weyerhaeuser, a $19 billion company, is a top logger and distributor of endangered forest products from North America, South America, Australia, and the Pacific Rim.

Our Earth’s forests are in state of crisis. We've already lost 80% of old-growth forests worldwide and less than 5% remain in the United States. According to the United Nations, at least 37.5 million acres of rainforests are lost annually, an area the size of England, Wales and Scotland combined. Despite the relatively small land area they cover, rainforests are home to about half of the 5 to 10 million plant and animal species on the Earth.

It is no longer acceptable to destroy our environment, and we can not sit back and watch one of the world's largest corporations destroy our last original forests. These forests are the lungs of our planet and home to some of the most beautiful and oldest living ecosystems. Many of these living systems have existed for over seventy million years. Yet, every day from British Columbia to the Amazon, thousands of acres of these natural cathedrals are logged and turned into toilet paper, 2x4s, grocery bags, plywood and legion of other products for human consumption and disposal.

RAN's Old Growth Campaign committed to targeting Weyerhaeuser until the company agrees to stop logging the world's endangered forests, and we need you to join us. RAN is part of a growing movement of activists who are applying successful market campaigning strategies against the world's largest corporations, targeting their profit line and disrupting their environmentally destructive business practices until they agree to stop destroying the world's forests. In order to achieve its goal, RAN works with activists, organizations and caring individuals like you, utilizing non-violent direct action, training, education and outreach in order to bring about reform in the boardrooms of the world's largest corporations.

Victoria's Dirty Secret

Facts About Victoria's Secret

"I believe a company like ours should be a source for good. For us. For our communities. For the world."
-Les Wexner, Chairman & CEO, Limited Brands

So much for that idea!

Victoria's Secret, part of Limited Brands, claims to be a good global citizen. Yet by mailing more than a million catalogs a day, the company is leading the way in global forest destruction.

What You Should Know About Victoria's Dirty Secret:

www.victoriasdirtysecret.net/article.php

* Approximately 395 million catalogs are mailed by Victoria's Secret each year--that's more than one million a day.
* Most catalogs end up in the trash or recycling--often without even being looked at.
* Almost all of these catalogs are produced from virgin fiber paper with little or no recycled content.
* Paper for these catalogs is destroying Endangered Forests like the great northern Boreal forest of Canada.

www.victoriasdirtysecret.net/article.php

* Victoria’s Secret is not satisfied with just stripping the Boreal, it is also destroying forests in the Southern U.S. The Southern U.S. is one of the most biologically diverse regions of our country where nearly six million acres of forest are logged each year, primarily for the production of paper.
* Indigenous people are being negatively impacted by the logging and paper production industries.
* Native plant and animal populations are being destroyed by logging and processing operations and the pollution they create.
* Because of its immense buying power, Victoria's Secret is in a position to help change the catalog industry toward sustainable paper purchasing.
* The company has refused to make commitments to protect our Endangered Forests.

What We're Demanding of Victoria's Secret and Limited Brands:

* End purchases from any company that is not identifying and halting logging in Endangered Forests in the Canadian Boreal;
* Maximize post-consumer recycled content in catalogs (achieve 50% post-consumer recycled in five years);
* Ensure that all suppliers are shifting to Forest Stewardship Council certification;
* End the use of any forest products sourced from other Endangered Forests, such as key areas of the Southern U.S.
* Reduce paper use

How You Can Take Action:

* Speak out- click here to send an email to CEO, refer your friends to the campaign, and find out how to reduce the amount of catalogs you receive.

Victoria’s Secret’s Greenwashing Antics VIDEO

www.victoriasdirtysecret.net/article.php

Watch as the CEO and Chairman of Limited Brands, Victoria’s Secret’s parent company, claims to be “relentless about trying to do the right thing” for the environment. Check out his greenwashing video where he also says that, “on the priority of right things to do, one of them is to be a good steward of the environment.”

With a million catalogs mailed daily, the majority of which come from virgin fiber, it seems that Victoria’s Secret’s real priority is environmental destruction.

In early January, the Limited informed ForestEthics that it is moving it Victoria's Secret's clearance catalogs, (which account for approximately 10% of its overall catalogs,) to a high post-consumer recycled content paper. This move is in direct response to our campaign. This first step must be a precursor toward shifting the remaining approximately 90% of Victoria's Secret's catalogs to high post-consumer recycled paper that does not come from Endangered Forests, and we will continue campaigning to that end.

To see the true devastation wreaked by Victoria’s Secret’s catalogs, check out this CNN feature on the destruction of Canada’s Boreal forest, one of the sources of Victoria’s Secret’s paper.

# Call for Direct Action Against World Bank and IMF Meetings, April 21-23
This Spring, Paul Wolfowitz, the President of the World Bank Group and
the architect of the War in Iraq, will be convening the biannual
meetings of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF),
bringing together at the table the two capitalist tools of global
exploitation -- the wars of military might with the strangleholds of
economic imperialism. The World Bank and the IMF, which have been the
principal players in the economic devastation of the Global South
through Structural Adjustment Programs (currently referred to as
Poverty
Reduction Strategy Papers), will meet again in downtown Washington, DC
to schmooze with the private sector, laugh in the face of the world's
poor, and live off the fat of other people's land.

This year, however, we are going to force them to see the resistance
that is alive in our hearts, in our minds and across the globe. Seeing
our faces, or ours masks as the case may be, will be a requisite part
of
their weekend activities. We will be at their doorsteps, behind their
limos, at their parties and in their yard. From blockades to home
demos,
interruption to disruption, we'll be there, following their every move.

We urge everyone to come to Washington, DC the weekend of April 21-23
to
take part in these historic protests against the World Bank and IMF.
Say no to Capitalist globalization and yes to the power of the people
and the power of direct action!

This call is brought to you by the Farragut Squares Collective, a local
ad hoc group of individuals fed up with the Bretton Woods Institutions
and capitalist globalization. We fully support a collaborative, open,
and non-hierarchical organizing relationship with all who wish to join
us in taking action. Send any inquiries or shows of support to
farragutsquares gmail com

"In the world I see -- you will stalk elk through the damp canyon forests around the ruins of Rockefeller Center. You will wear leather clothes that last you the rest of your life. You will climb the wrist-thick kudzu vines that wrap the Sears Tower, and when you look down, you will see tiny figures pounding corn and laying strips of venison on the empty car pool lane of some abandoned superhighway." # We are not mass mobilizing for this year’s World Bank / IMF meetings.
What?! You will not find a rally with speeches you will not listen to and
a march from one park to another past an assortment of empty buildings.
BUT, YOU WILL FIND LOTS OF ACTION! Don’t come to Washington, DC, April 21
– 23 if all you intend to do is march. However, if you want to take
effective action, march and do a whole lot more!

World Bank/IMF Spring Meetings, April 21-23, 2006

Schedule of Resistance:

Friday, April 21st- Evening Spokes Council - Gather with other individuals
and affinity groups to strategize and plan actions for the weekend. Time
to be announced. Place: The convergence center at St. Stephens Church,
16th and Newton Streets NW (S2 and S4 bus; Columbia Heights Metro)

Saturday, April 22nd- We are organizing a day of trainings (at the
convergence center) to be followed by an evening of action. While the
goons of capitalist exploitation plot their schemes behind closed doors,
we will prepare ourselves for effective and safe resistance. From legal
trainings to guerrilla street theater, affinity group training to an
orientation on DC community struggles, we will gather our tools and
CONFRONT THE DELEGATES AND THEIR CORPORATE FRIENDS ON SATURDAY FOLLOWING
THE TRAININGS. If they want to eat, drink, and be merry on the backs of
billions worldwide, they will do so in the face of our resistance.

Sunday, April 23rd- Day of autonomous direct action. Keep the pressure on
the individuals who power the machine of global exploitation. Let them
know they cannot stage their war on the poor without hearing our cries in
the streets! ****

# Art at the Dump Friday, April 21 and Saturday, April 22 5pm-9pm and 1pm-5pm free

Artists use garbage to create and inspire us to be less wasteful -
that is the aim of Norcal Waste Systems' Artist In Residence Program.
Work by Sarah Barsness and Ed Clapp will be on exhibit at a free
reception on Friday, April 21st from 5 to 9 p.m. and again on
Saturday, April 22nd from 1 to 5 p.m. at the art studio at SF
Recycling & Disposal's at 503 Tunnel Avenue in San Francisco.
This exhibit is the climax of a unique residency where both Ed and
Sarah scavenged through San Francisco's very own detritus. Ed and
Sarah had the opportunity to collect all of their art materials from
the public disposal area and the salvaged items that they found were
used to construct and to inspire their artwork.
Ed worked mostly with wood and created sculptures "that will
hopefully inspire people to look and to feel deeply." Ed explains, "
I work with the detritus of our consumerist, 'throwaway' culture. I
hope to find creative uses for trash that will make people more aware
of material that we use in daily life."
Each artist gathered very different materials reflecting the
differing themes in their work. Ed's show titled, "Redemption",
signifies the ability to "redeem" discarded materials and make them
new again. He was interested in returning the materials back to a
natural, organic form to remind us from where our raw materials come.
Sarah collected fabric, umbrellas, nylons and buttons to create
colorful web-like pieces. "The challenge of making art with found
objects is that the objects must tell you what they want to become;
they cannot be forced to cooperate with some preconceived notion. It
requires patience, faith and a deep sensitivity to the significance
and potential of each object. It also requires time."
Sarah's show titled "Fugitive" is in reference to the ephemeral,
tenuous, constantly shifting and fleeing nature of both objects and
the self and their close relationship to the seductive and
overwhelming power of memory. According to Sarah. "Objects seem to
move so quickly from being essential and treasured to being useless
and burdensome. Retrieving discarded objects shifted them once again
to a level of value and meaning."
The program was initiated in 1990 by the joint efforts of artist Jo
Hanson, the City of San Francisco and the company to spur people to
conserve natural resources and to instill in children and adults
increased appreciation for the environment as well as art. More than
55 artists have completed residencies.
Bay Area artists apply for the very competitive dump residencies.
Those selected by a nine-member advisory board are handed the keys to
a 2,200-square-foot art studio and given access to San Francisco's
garbage and recycling facilities.
Art from the program is displayed in local schools and in public
spaces. Many participating artists also make a permanent piece for
the 3-acre sculpture garden on the hillside above the San Francisco
Transfer Station, where 2,100 tons of landfill-bound trash is dumped,
crushed by bulldozers and top-loaded into 18-wheelers five days a week.
Each day, trucks drop their hauls from San Francisco at the garbage
and recycling complex at Tunnel Avenue and Beatty Road. To residents
and businesses the truckloads amount to rubbish; to artists the daily
deliveries are a tremendous source of art materials.
"I hope my work sparks the viewers' imagination and allows them to
think differently about trash and about what we are doing on and to
the planet." -Ed Clapp

Overview
This 14th edition of the Digital Be-In combines its lineage of invention and cultural evolution marking the dawn of the digital age with the emerging green economy and sustainable culture movement. Producer Michael Gosney (whose Verbum magazine began the Digital Be-In during the late 1980s) developed the Paradox conferences on sustainable communities at Arcosanti, Arizona in 1997, 1999 and 2001  www.greencenturyinstitute.org/par....htm  and formed the Green Century Institute in San Francisco in 2002. Planetwork, founded in San Francisco by Jim Fournier and Elizabeth Thompson in 1998, fosters the creative application of digital tools for positive global change through a series of conferences and monthly forums in major cities. The Green Century Institute and Planetwork are working with several San Francisco Bay Area groups that were involved in the seminal World Environment Day week in San Francisco June 5–11, 2005  www.wed2005.org  in the development of this combination daytime symposium, evening rally/celebration and late night dance party. As in the past, the Digital Be-In will reach beyond the physical event with a live netcast, information-intense website and new kinds of exposure and interaction via social networks and blogs. The theme “Planet Code” implies our writing (and re-writing where necessary) the “codes” that define our place within and interaction with the natural environment, and calls upon the high technology community we have encouraged and celebrated over the years to empower the sustainability movement with bold, forward-thinking initiatives.

Sponsorship
Digital Be-In 14 will offer a variety of opportunities for sponsors to reach opinion leaders, press and a receptive public interested in SOLUTIONS FOR A SUSTAINABLE CULTURE. All presentations and content associated with the EARTH DAY BE-IN will emphasize new projects and initiatives: actions! We encourage sponsors to use the Be-In as a launching platform for products and campaigns that are making a difference. Outreach via marketing messages, the Be-In website, associated organization websites, social networks and public relations will be designed to inform and connect the public with sustainable culture resources. 2006 is a vital year for shifting the tide of awareness and action toward sustainability and April 22, 2006 promises to be a pivotal date. Please contact Michael Gosney or Justin Weiner from GCI for details on sponsorship programs.

# Sat May 6 BERKELEY FREE MARKET is every first Saturday, and <<the idea is to give and receive without money... bring stuff you want to give, including your talnet: juggling, poetry, music, contact improv, capoeira, bodywork, art, t-shirt making, freestyling, martian psychic past-life restoration, and remodeling stuff... all that stuff that's still cool but you don't need: clothes, toys, working electric stuff, your old jaguar, etc. Skip the tedious garage sale, come and enjoy giving it away... come to give and enjoy giving, and/or come to receive and find cool stuff free and give people the joy of giving. Three (count 'em, three) guidelines: 1) If you bring stuff, and no one takes it, take it home with you... i.e., "leave no trace" 2) Keep the non-money spirit of the event by not taking stuff to sell 3) If you bring stuff, and no one takes it, take it home with you.>> FREE (of course); 12-4pm; next to the Berkeley Farmer's Market in MLK park on Martin Luther King Way @ Allston Way; 510-290-5301; KevinTouch@msn.com
