<div>I've come to the conclusion that if I want to meet anyone new to date, I'm going to have to break out of my regular circles. Otherwise I'm stuck swimming in a sea of people I've already slept with, people my friends have slept with, people I already know and don't want to sleep with, and people that are already sleeping primarily with other people.

So, if you know of any available men that I might be interested in and who might be interested in me, please point me towards them. Not just any random single friend, though; please think of what you know about me and what you know about them, and only make an introduction if it seems like it might be a good fit. For example, conventional, "normal", conservative, righteously monogamous, or religious just isn't going to work. But if you sincerely know any great men that I should meet, because you think we might like each other, I'm game for being set up.

What am I looking for? Available men, no children, employed. Lives in Seattle, preferably in the heart of Seattle. Somewhere from late 20's to early 40's; youthful at heart but maturity of spirit matters more than physical age. My type? Hippie-ravers, men who look like they're going into or coming out of the woods. NPR listeners. Thinkers. Liberals. Active and playful. Confident. Intelligent. Sexy. Open-minded. You get the idea.

I'd prefer links to any on-line presence if possible (tribe profile, flickr stream, blog, whatever). Please do not give out my personal information, rather, make an introduction via tribe.net or email.

Yeah, I know, I could post an ad on craigslist or join an on-line dating service, but then I'd have to pre-screen everyone myself. This way, you, my friends, get to do the pre-screening for me!

Set me up!  Have fun!</div>

    </a>
										<div>Last weekend was the Shambhala Music Festival in Salmo, BC. I traveled with an amazing group of friends and had a most spectacular time, even better than I remember last year. As far as music festivals go, Shambhala is the cream of the crop. The incredible sound systems, visuals, various stages, and performers were top-notch. The setting is perfect; woods surrounded by beautiful mountains with a lovely river to cool off in, and a surreal landscape populated by some of the most lovely human creatures imaginable. I had the best time I've had in ages; from start to finish, everything about this year's Shambhala was extraordinary.

Some of my highlights:

*Shaking it for 3 straight hours of Fort Knox Five breakbeat mash-ups in the Fractal Forest on saturday night (best live set I've ever heard) while flirting with my adorable 2-hour crush and being ridiculously happily inebriated for the first time ever with semi-retired ravers Ariel and Andreas: http://www.flickr.com/photos/41968425@N00/1110659089/in/pool-shambles/
*Putting in my ear plugs and giggling ecstatically while being shaken to the core righty up front by the most amazing bass by Sub Swara at The Village on sunday evening (no picture of that moment, but here's one of The Village by day: http://www.flickr.com/photos/playapixie/1113483886/in/set-72157601434063139/ )

Shura and I adopted a baby! OK, actually it's a two-year-old chihuahua. He is super sweet and darling and we love him to bits and pieces.

He came with the name Pee Wee, but we're changing it. We've been throwing names at him until one sticks. So far our favorites are Sprocket and Monster. We also like Orbit, Moxie, and a dozen other names people have tried on him. What do you think?

Bjork! (And Sasquatch!)

<a href="http://people.tribe.net/playapixie/blog/f0f2f0f8-01b6-4c22-aafc-47d6a58369fa">  						          <img class=" picThumb" src="http://images.tribe.net/tribe/upload/photo/344/7e3/3447e3f3-6429-439b-9a94-21c4d40ece2b.thumb" width="65" height="48" alt="" />
    </a>
										<div>I had an amazingly fun weekend traveling with a super-duper crowd (Gwen, Tim, Lori, Robyn, Andras, Erik, and Christina) to The Gorge Amphitheater for the Sasquatch! Music Festival. I was there to see Bjork, but was also blown away by some of the other talent that I was less familiar with (particularly The Arcade Fire...wow!)

I hadn't been to a concert at the Gorge in maybe 10 years (Dave Matthews with The Horde), and I can't believe I have stayed away that long. Could there be any more spectacular of a venue to see an artist you love? Absolutely Amazing.

Bjork was a goddess. She gave perhaps one the best live shows I've ever seen. There's no one else anything like her, and I was just blown away.

The only downer was that after the show ended and we started packing up our stuff, I discovered that my very favorite article of clothing in the entire world, the black fleece coat with the ears that you've all seen me in all winter, was missing. I literally started crying. I can't believe I am so attached to a material thing, but I just wasn't ready to part with this piece. I still can't believe it's gone; it was like a layer of skin to me. *sigh* I checked the website of the store I got it at (Ceiba Records in San Francisco) and they don't seem to have any more of them in my size. I'm going to try calling them though.

Anyhow, photos from Sasquatch! are up at: http://www.flickr.com/photos/playapixie/sets/72157600275023208/</div>

Momentary local celebrity

<a href="http://people.tribe.net/playapixie/blog/a524a5fd-71df-49a7-8584-0d0cabd2e054">  						          <img class=" picThumb" src="http://images.tribe.net/tribe/upload/photo/3db/1a6/3db1a626-1d28-45ce-b5ea-02bb942ec4e8.thumb" width="65" height="42" alt="" />
    </a>
										<div>Apparently, being in The Stranger makes you a local celebrity, at least for a couple of days. I know this because this shameful photo of me holding my 1988 journal was published in The Stranger this week in "The Stranger Suggests." They were suggesting that readers check out The Salon of Shame, a bimonthly event where people read from their old diaries and journals. I think this photo was taken the night I read my journal entry about losing my virginity when I was a born-again-christian, which was during the regrettable period of my life where I was also &amp;lt;gasp> a republican. Truly, could there be anything more shameful than voting for Bush-Quayle? It's true: I used my first opportunity to vote in a presidential election to help elect a Bush. *shudder*

Anyhow, since the paper came out, I've received at least 30 text messages, emails, or phone calls from friends telling me they saw me in The Stranger and who couldn't wait to harass me for my incredibly horrible judgement in the late 1980's. I even got it in the park today from a guy who I didn't even really know, but had met briefly while walking our dogs a few weeks back, who happily joined in the teasing. All I could do was laugh at myself.

Anyhow, I'd encourage you to check out the next Salon of Shame, at the CHAC next tuesday, but alas, despite moving to a new larger venue, it's already sold out.

<div>I've been lying low at home for half of a week now, recovering from a flu bug. As result, I've had way more down time than I've had in a long, long time. I feel like I've been burning the candle at both ends for months now, with stresses piling up at work and at home, plus the usual busy social calendar. Sometimes it takes being sick to remind me to slow down.

Anyhow, as a result of sitting around at home getting bored out of my brain, I've been spending a lot of hours geeking out on my computer. I've been playing with new programs that I haven't had the time to learn yet (mostly Aperture), dicking around with pictures that I've taken with my new lens (Canon 10-22mm super wide angle) and my new camera (Canon SD800IS point &amp; shoot). I've been catching up on friend's blogs. And I've been thinking about my own blogging habits, how they've developed over the years, and where I want to focus my blogging energies. So here's where I need your help!

First, a bit of history. When I started my original blog, playapixie.org, blogging was only just starting to take off. While there had been bloggers out there for a few years, a lot of people still didn't know what blogs were. At that point, there were way less options for how and where you could blog. Initially Playapixie was a pretty standard blog: mostly words, mostly randomata from my daily life. Shortly after I started it, I developed an interest in digital photography and got my first digital camera, so I started adding pictures to most of my posts. Over time, my interest in photography grew, and I changed the format of my main page to more-or-less what you see now: a large photo for every entry, one entry per page, and maybe a written entry to go with the photo.

I still really like the large photo format, and I still think of Playapixie as mainly a photoblog. But what happened as a result of that change was that I almost completely stopped blogging in the traditional sense; I wasn't writing any of the silly random stuff anymore. I got picky about what photos I'd put up, and if I couldn't think of anything to say that went with the picture, I wouldn't say anything at all. Lots of times I'd have things to say, but no picture to go with it, so I just wouldn't say anything. And more often then not, I'd post nothing, because I don't really like post-processing, and getting pictures ready to post is work.

In the past year or so, a few new blogging tools have come along that have changed the way I think of blogging. First, Flickr.com made posting snapshots and sharing photos in a community-centered way much easier. Second, Tribe.net became the social networking site that a huge number of my friends and acquaintances joined, and they have a nice blogging feature. Third, some friends of mine in San Francisco launched Vox.com, yet another really lovely community-oriented blogging tool. So my blogging efforts have gotten scattered. I've been using Tribe as my main randomata, word-oriented blog (particularly when I'm thinking of my Seattle and Burning Man friends), Flickr as the place where my day-to-day snapshots land (as well as event albums), Vox as an alternate blog spot when I have my San Francisco friends in mind, and maintaining a Livejournal account for following my friends there. The result of all of this scattered energy is that Playapixe.org has been almost completely neglected.

But I still feel the most personal attachment to my Playapixie.org site. I'd like to focus more of my energy here, but I'm not quite sure what that will look like. I'm toying with leaving it as it is, but trying to post more, or adding a separate page that's more of a traditional word blog, or maybe making the front page be a spit screen, so the most recent photo entry and the most recent word entry are always on the main page, but they don't necessarily go together.

So what I'd like to know from my friends and readers is how do you use blogs? Where do you focus your energies, both as a blog reader and as a blogger? Do you follow your friend's online ramblings in multiple locations, or do you only read what they put in one particular place (their main blog, or Livejournal, or Tribe, for example.) Would you prefer it if entries in multiple locations were the same (so you only have to look one place to find it all)? Or do you like it when their various blogs say different things? I'd love any thoughts that might help me figure out where to take my blogging energies next.</div>

<div>I feel like I've been burning the candle at both ends for weeks now. Work's been especially stressful and exhausting (it seems to come in waves.) My social life's been pretty good; mostly just concentrating on spending quality time with a smaller number of people (although I did make it to Kinetic II last weekend, where I worked the Space Virgin bars most of the night.) But exhaustion has finally got the best of me, and I've been taken down with the flu.

Nothing like being sick to force you to slow down. Yesterday I made it out of the house as far as the Hot House Spa, and then right back home into bed with take-out thai food and a movie. Today I'm feeling like I may rally and go to a yoga class, even if I have to spend a lot of it in child's pose. I can only handle so much laying around before I start to go crazy!</div>

<a href="http://people.tribe.net/playapixie/blog/a55d3665-bcc8-4170-91aa-b392b049fd57">  						          <img class=" picThumb" src="http://images.tribe.net/tribe/upload/photo/a29/626/a296266d-da8c-4d1d-a130-9e4aa16b7957.thumb" width="65" height="48" alt="" />
    </a>
										<div>Today was one of the coolest days of my professional career so far. I've been caring for an extremely critically ill toddler in the Cardiac ICU most of the days that I've been at work for the past 6 weeks. This little guy has worked his way into my heart, to the point that I've been having dreams about him. He's waiting for a heart transplant, and each day I've seen his fragile little body slip further into failure, and each day my own heart would sink a little deeper as my fears for his survival increased. For two weeks he's been sustained on the most high-tech life-support that we have to offer, called ECMO, which is essentially a heart-lung bypass machine like they use during heart surgeries, but run in the intensive care unit. It's very risky to be on ECMO, and it means that the patient has be be kept totally unconscious on a ventilator, and paralyzed with medications. At best, ECMO is a temporary "bridge" until transplant, but even with it, many children die while waiting for the heart donation that might save their lives.

Today, my little patient got off of ECMO when he became only the 17th pediatric patient in the nation to receive a mechanical heart called a Berlin Heart. It's essentially an external pump that takes over the function of his heart. It's not permanent, but hopefully it will sustain him while he waits for a heart transplant. And with this device, hopefully we'll be able to get him off of the ventilator, allow him to wake up, and get him out of the ICU while he waits for his real heart. This is awesome. I've become quite attached to this little angel and his family, and my fingers are crossed that he will become one of our miracle kids.

    </a>
										<div>Yesterday I made my first visit to The Seattle Art Museum's new Olympic Sculpture Park. The park's grand opening was last weekend. Yesterday, I made a quick 30-minute stop at the park to get a first impression and snap a few photos while I was out running errands.

My first thoughts, as I approached the park on foot were "wow, this is cool! This is really metropolitan and progressive! Beautiful." I could see several funky modern pieces of art from a couple of blocks away. The landscaping was striking and unique. The Puget Sound and Olympic Mountains were in the background, and the sky a rare bright January blue, with brilliant white wispy clouds.

As I crossed the street and entered the park, though, the first words I was greeted with were those on this sign. My heart dropped a little.

I can understand the urge that is felt to protect the art, but I still felt deeply offended. After all, isn't it public art, our art? If it's our art, why are we not allowed to feel it, put our ears to it, view it from every angle? Further into the park I discovered some of the pieces even had little fences around them. It gradually gave me the sense that I wasn't in a park at all, not even in a true public space, but rather in a museum, inside a private art collection. My earlier excitement started to fizzle. It felt stale.

I do love the park, and the photographer in me can't wait to get back to it on a day where I have more time, and when the lighting is brilliant. But I can't help but be disappointed by the unprogressive demeanor of the park. Perhaps it's the Burner in me, but I truly believe in art that resonates with people because the people get to experience it, participate in it, and be a part of it. A sculpture park seems like such an easy venue for art that the public can interact with. Sculpture is often hearty, solid, resonant, and tactile. Sculpture can easily offer ways to engage all of the senses: seeing the vibrant colors and pattern in the form and materials, touching the varied textures and tempturtures, hearing the wind whistle through its parts or the sound of a drumming thumb, smelling the scents of wood and iron, even tasting (if you wish) the metallic buzz of tongue on metal or salt spray. Instead, the signs not to touch and the little keep-away fences inform me that only my eyes get to enjoy this art, and only from the designated perspectives.

It seems ironic that it took amazing creativity and vision to birth this park into our city, yet that vision fails to embrace or challenge the imaginations and creativity of those it was created for. Rather than a park that feels like our park, with art that feels like our art, it feels like we're guests a private garden. I love the vision that brought it here, but I think that vision is not yet fully actualized, perhaps not yet even realized. But I hope to see the park grow into something that would truly be a fitting tribute to this vibrant and progressive city that we live in. I'd love to see our grassroots art culture transform The Olympic Sculpture Park into a truly interactive public space, with art that resonates with the people.</div>

My birthday is Thursday!

<div>No matter how young I feel, the years keep going by, and the calendar says I'm about to be another year older on Thursday (January 18th). It's true.

So if you're free, come celebrate with me! I'm planning to meet anyone who cares to join me for dinner and drinks at The Elysian Brewery (2112 E. Pike Street on Capitol Hill) at 8pm.

For those who want to stay out later with me, my plan is to go out dancing after dinner. I'm not sure where we're going, so bring on your suggestions! I'm generally a fan of the Re-Bar, as they have a big dance floor and usually aren't too packed, and in my world, a big, uncrowded dance floor means hooping! And you know how much I love hooping. But I can't tell from their website or phone line what's going on there this Thursday.

So, if you've got other suggestions for Thursday night dancing, leave them in the comments. My ideal: a big, uncrowded dance floor and Breakbeats! Short of that I'll settle for any decent dance music (and by decent I most definitely don't mean 80's remixes!) I'll write another post with the final destination when I figure that out. Also, I'll send out Dodgeball updates that night so you'll know where we are (what? You're not on Dodgeball? You should be! Go there now: http://www.dodgeball.com )

Also, please send me a message or leave a comment if you're planning on meeting at the Elysian for dinner (so I'll know how big of a table to reserve.)</div>

Indoor hooping Saturday!

<div>Do you think hula hooping looks fun? Or are you already an addict like me? If so, join us tomorrow (saturday) for an indoor hooper's playtime!

What:  Hooper's playtime!
Where: Velocity Dance Center on Capitol Hill (Pine Street across from the playfields at Cal Anderson Park, Capitol Hill), Main Space
When: Saturday, January 6, 1:30PM to 3:30 PM
Cost: The studio is around $25, which we will split between whoever shows up (expect $2-3/person)
Who: Hula Hoopers and fire spinners (unlit, of course)

Bring your hoops and toys and be prepared to have a fun time. No formal instruction, but lots of chances to learn from eachother. Come even if you don't have a hoop, as people will bring some to share (and bring extras if you have them.)

This event has been planned by the Seattle Hooper's Tribe, but we've also invited the Slinging in the Rain tribe (Seattle fire spinners) to join us, so it's also a chance to practice or learn fire tools (poi, staff, etc...)

Come join us for some fun!</div>

<div>I've been a huge fan of the NPR radio program This American Life for years. I can think of numerous occasions when I actually stayed in my parked car in front of my house rather than going inside because I didn't want to miss any of the show. Now that I have a much shorter work commute, and no longer during This American Life, I've missed a lot of the shows. I've wanted to subscribe to the podcast, but in the past it cost money. Now it's FREE! I'm so excited. I just signed up. Now I can listen to This American Life on on iPod any time I like...wheeeeeeee!

<div>If you're not playing Reality All Starz, you should be!

What, you haven't heard of Reality All Starz? It's a super fun internet game that local Seattle Burner Peter Brown invented. People invent challenges for eachother to do, vote on how many points the challenge should be worth, then submit proof (preferably photo or video) of their attempt. Then you get to vote on their attempt. It's fun on a lot of levels, as it encourages people to do stuff in real life, it's highly interactive, and it's a blast to find out new things about your friends. I want all of you to go sign up and play it!

Peter just opened the game up to more than just the testers a few days ago, so get on board!

<div>Shura and Stacey, the best house-mates ever, who are always good for girl-time and laughter, walk my dog and feed her when I'm not home, and are generally fantastic women. A spontaneous dinner and cocktail hour with them last week when we were all feeling kind of blah was just the right thing.

Ariel, who sent me a text message while I was at work saturday saying she missed me (it had been like a whole week since we last hung out!) and could she take me to dinner when I got off work. When I said I was too tired for going out because I was on a long work stretch, she said she was showing up on my porch when I got home with take-out, and when I got home, there she was on my porch with Thai food. Now that's a good friend!

Brannon, who always makes me feel great, and especially for the back rub and TLC last night. Did I mention that I'm seriously infatuated with this boy?

My co-worker married my ex-boyfriend

<div>Yesterday was a funny day. Woke feeling blue, for no reason at all. Today I feel a lot better, mainly because of the entertaining evening I had last night.

Last evening I went out with a bunch of co-workers for drinks and dinner. While there I met the husband of one of my co-workers, who, it turns out, is an ex-boyfriend of mine from 10 years ago. Actually, Ira and I were more like "platonic-romantic friends," as at the time, I was dating someone else long-distance. But we certainly spent a lot of time together in 1996.

My co-workers were amuzed by the fact that I had once dated Aleah's husband, but what they were really poking fun at was how Ira and I met: country western dancing at Houston's, a country bar in Tacoma.

I can't wait to dig out my journals and read what I wrote back then. There might be a good Salon of Shame story in this too, especially if I can get Aleah and Ira (who are expecting their first baby in February) to come.

(The Salon of Shame is a bi-monthly literary event where crazy people like me read embarrasing entries from our old diaries and journals. Check out http://salonofshame.com/ for more info.)</div>

Blue, out of the blue

<div>I'm feeling blue, out of the blue.

I'm not depressive. In fact, I'm chronically happy. Aside from a few very appropriate situational depressions during very hard times in my life (for example, the divorce of my parents, the death of one of my great loves, and my own divorce,) I've never really been depressed, at least never for long.

But today I'm feeling blue. There is no just cause for this at all. In fact, if anything, I should be the opposite of blue. Today I woke in the arms of a lover, and have been very much enjoying the first stages of a fine romance with a darling, sexy boy. The sun came out today. I spent a lovely afternoon with a dear friend, and a quiet walk in the park at dusk with my dog. I got to play with my adorable almost two-year-old niece Ivy yesterday. I still love my job. Pretty much everything in my life is as it should be.

So why do I feel blue, out of the blue?</div>

As always, it was a lovely event. I especially loved the wide age range of the people there; what a truly multi-generational and all-inclusive event.</div>

Pop Culture Magazines

<div>I'm killing some rare downtime at work by looking at the magazines that my co-workers have left lying around. The ones I find most often are People, Life &amp; Style Weekly, and other media/celebrity or fashion magazines. I'm not really a consumer of popular culture media in the form of magazines, television, or movies, so I usually have no idea who the people in these magazines are. Honestly, I'd rather hear gossip from the private lives of any of my co-workers than read about how Jen Still Loves Brad. But every now and then I'll browse these magazines and get a taste of American pop culture.

Today I thumbed through O Magazine. This magazine I understand even less than the celeb/fashion ones. As far as I can tell, it's 224 pages of articles explaining how to be as white-bread and boring as your white-bread boring neighbors. No gossip, no sex, no sass, nothing interesting at all. Just Oprah and Dr. Phil and a bunch of other dull old farts putting on fake shining smiles that we're all supposed to emulate. Gah!

Even though I have no idea who most of the celebs are, I had to set aside O Mag in favor of Katie's 6-million-dollar wedding, Jessica and Ashlee's jealousy, and how Poor Nicole is Losing Her Hair.

Pop culture is weird.</div>
