The protest Rally!
Thu, April 10, 2008 - 12:21 PMWe were surrounded by very professional pro-china people, who were themselves at least highly confrontational, and tending toward violent rhetoric. We were not comfortable around these people -- they were very successful in their intimidation. We wound up north of the Ferry Building, and fell in with a group of Burmese activists. They handed out home-made flags of maroon fabric zip-tied to pvc pipes, and we waved our flags and chanted. Classic non-violent voicing of opinion….There were various other protesting groups, ghettoized north of the main press area by the throngs of slickly outfitted pro-China supporters.
The police, gods love them, did a marvelous job of keeping order and keeping us all from suspecting the truth. There were lots of police, keeping the path clear, and then suddenly they were all gone, and it took quite some time for people to figure out what had occurred. There were some ordinary folks come to see the torch, but mostly it was a political camera-fest, for all sides, and the torch would indeed have lost significance in the fracas.
By the time that the torch was on its alternate path, Robert and I had tired of chanting and waiting, so we saw the progress of the torch down Van Ness from Sinbad's Bar. We toasted the prank, which did indeed seem rather San Francisco-esque, especially because they didn't tell most of the big media, and they were scrambling! The foreign media, which had been pushed to the margins just as the anti-Chinese protestors had been, had no chance to extricate themselves and get to the actual route.
All in all, a beautiful day for a protest followed by Whippets in a bar overlooking the bay. AND we got to take home our homemade Burma freedom flag.

Thanks for the woman-in-the-street type behind the scenes on this. So many of us watched it all unfold on TV and were happy the most of the violence and property damage were avoided. It's nice to know that both our concern about potential problems and our approval of Gavin's solution seem to be right on.

I thought what the mayor did was great. Sure, changing the route at the last minute pissed off the activists (though sorely deserve their say) but it brilliantly prevented the Chinese government from having a bunch of pro China flag wavers conveniently promoting their country on film to air in their country while keeping it what it was all about: the spirit of the Olympics!
Good job Gavin! BTW: Here's an interesting article you might enjoy: www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi It's scary the Chinese government can mount a large scale protest thousands of miles from them in our country! |

The Mayor of San Fransico is one cool, savvy dude. Props to him for a perfect solution that embraced the spirit of The City.

That was a interesting view point. A woman on the streets. I saw the pro- Chinese people on the news and they seemed so programmed. And you got souvenirs and drinks which is always a good thing.
I was watching the news this morning and there was a man on that has written a book and has been against giving the Olympics to the Chinese. Kinda like Nazi Germany hosting the 1936 Olympics. Anyway he said that the Chinese government did get their media footage of a calm relay with happy, smiling Chinese faces cheering the torch. They will edit it and show in in mainland China to show what a good thing it was. Those nasty English and French really screwed up their media shots. |

GO LARA!
I wished I could have gone....stupid work got in the way.
:-) I got to see the torch when Coach Carter carried it last time......it was a lot more fun & happy than the picture you paint. I'm glad you got to see what you did & could pass it on to us! |

sorry you missed it
but it sounds like you at least had fun
as for the gov't backed pro-protesters, if they can do everything else they get away with, getting supporters here in SF was a cake walk. |
