as of tonight, i officially quit smoking!

i am done with it but i need your help. if you see me trying to beg, borrow, buy or light up a cigarette PLEASE remind me of the promise i am making to myself. i may be a little cranky but i will definitely be grateful. thanks!

ps- on telling a friend that i am quitting today, they said they would too. sweet!

Try to distract yourself whenever you feel like having a cigarette- keep chewing gums, candy or fruits handy and substitute.

right on sweetie! and making a public statement is a great step toward accountability and success! yay for YOU!

i quit semi-recently (it seems like i was quitting for years... but finally got over it!) and have never been happier! it is the BEST decision i ever made, really! it will free up your time, your money, and you will feel soooooooo much better both physically and mentally. i promise!

please do let me know if i can be of any help! it can be really hard, but at the same time, it's pretty fucking easy when you break it down to it's bare bones. tell yourself that *you just don't smoke anymore. it is no longer an option.* once you see the ridiculousness of your smoking (ie: why would someone so AMAZING and POWERFUL as YOU be a slave to anything, especially something so yucky and harmful?) it comes fairly easy. well, that was my experience anyway, but it certainly took me a long time to get that point of recognizing how completely absurd it was for me to smoke. i hope that you have arrived there or that you arrive there soon, cuz for me that was more powerful than any remedy.

here's some things that worked for me, hope you find them helpful:

i think the hardest part about quitting is breaking the actual habit, and having to deal with what to do with yourself when you are bored. i suggest creating a plan for how you will deal with boredom. (take a walk, pull weeds, clean a closet, do jumping jacks, whatever!)

i found the gum to be really helpful in the beginning. i didn't have to use it much after the first couple weeks... mostly i used it when i drove. but it's good to know that there's something there should you need it.

if you are into natural remedies, lobelia extract (tincture) is excellent for clearing the lungs. also, it is in the licorice family and affects some of the same synapses that nicotine does (or something like that) so it has a calming effect. chewing on licorice root (available in bulk herb bins at health food stores) is also nice cuz it gives you something to do with your mouth, and the roots are long and skinny like smokes. herb helps a lot too, if you are into that sort of thing. and any good health food store should have at least a couple homeopathic remedies to help with the cravings. ask for help when you go. vitamin people love to help.

take walks. drink LOTS of water. you will feel SO much better if you drink plenty of water (2-3 liters/day). take deep breaths, remind yourself of how good it feels to have oxygen deep in your lungs.

and know that you are LOVED! and we believe in you! and are here for you!

Way to go man!
I quit drinking and smoking at the same time about 5 months ago. After a few crazy break downs, whick you may have witnessed, I think I am finally over the hump. I was definately cranky, crazy and quit kicking and screaming, but I feel so much better now. Having more people to tell me NO, would have made it alot easier, but I also realized that I had to really want to not drink or smoke because I would yell at people who wouldn't let me have any. I felt more like shit before I was better, but now I feel really good and I know you will too. Congrats and keep it up no matter how stressful it gets your body will love you for it.

i decided to officially stop being a smoker last week too. hadn't bought a pack in years, but man did i continuously bum. No more! I'll hold your hand if you'll hold mine :)
