about me
Right-brain/left-brain cocktail: analytic/artistic, mushy/non-spiritual, fire-dancing/painter/lawyer/organizer. Can't say no to a creative project or a good argument. I deeply appreciate redwood groves and blazing sunsets without attaching any mystic significance to them - - I do not need to identify a divine hand in the things that take my breath away.

I was born & raised in NY, and topped-off in Northern CA. I like people who know why they believe what they believe and aren't afraid to share it.

I like to get things done and am bursting with ridiculous ideas. I lean forward into the future, romanticize the past and am lousy at "being in the moment," which is my loss admittedly. I majored in English and minored in creative writing and published a literary journal in Sonoma County called "Dark Hollow" for several years which featured fiction and poetry of an eerie/dark nature by a variety of both acclaimed and amateur writers.

I believe in the healing properties of humor, a long bike ride and a good night's sleep. I enjoy cooking the food I've grown. My children and partner charm me.

I believe that language is an art and suspect that choice words often shape our philosophies rather than express them.

I am learning tribal style bellydance and digging into earthen building techniques . Before I die, I will play the guitar and speak another language.

I am an optimist.

The latest and not-so-latest

On Mother's Day, I made a clay pizza&bread oven in my backyard. Dug up the clay soil from my meadow, added sand, water and straw and worked the day away piling, shaping, pressing and sculpting. As it came together, it began to look a little like a rabbit, so I chose that as the sculptural form and worked in some details (if you have a hard time seeing the rabbit in the picture, look for its ears pressed against its back and its nose above the oven opening). This weekend I added earth plast... read more

I turned 41 last week in Belize, on Ambergris Caye. Damn, it was a good place to be. Sand white and fine, sea bluest blue, bright orange sunrises over the reef and stars arcing above a lullaby of rustling palms at night. The people we met had easy, lethal smiles, drove boats like demons and coaxed colorful gardens from windswept sand. In the water we swam with rays, parrot fish, barracuda, nurse sharks. On a day trip into the mainland jungle, we took a 90 minute ride in inner-tubes down a ... read more

Quite shortly, we will begin adding minutes of light to each day again. How lovely, begins the long march from the winter to the summer solstice. So full of promise. Let the wheel of the year turn again! And this procession of family and friends whose laughter adds a warm rhythm to the percussion of rain on the December roof, thank you all. Good cheer, good cheer!

I spent the last day of my 30's on Maui at Po'olenalena Beach. Reclined under a low-slung palm and enjoyed a view of Molokini crater on the horizon. When I went into the surf for a dip, I was joined by an enormous green sea turtle. I could not have planned a better day for bringing down the decade.

I love this picture. It's my mother and father in college circa 1950. They were married for 53 years until my mother died 4 years ago. We now live next door to my father and work together quietly in the garden between our houses. The hours spent at that are always hours when the world feels right and things seem as they ought to be. I have come to realize that we have much to learn from our parents all the way to end.

My Testimonials

March 23, 2005
Quintessa is a goddess--sexy mom who knows the deal! Keeper of a real tribe of far flung individuals drom Apha to Omega, she has kept many together when they would have otherwise bounced away. A testament to love itself--with Quintessa on your side, you will always have a home and a philosophical soul to invite you in.

quintessa (or quintessy as i like to call her) rocks! I am pleased to know she is into fire-spinning as she always attacks her latest interest with a joyful verve that is contagious. she is a great friend to many and she is a shining social sun around which many interesting planets and moons revolve! It is certainly true that my life would not be the same without her infusion of positive fun energy, hence my unquenchable drive to testimonialize herewith.
