My Birthday Wish: I want to take things to the NEXT LEVEL

<a href="http://people.tribe.net/qwiki/blog/77066c8b-ea0d-41ad-ac48-2c6a515f8997">  						          <img class=" picThumb" src="http://images.tribe.net/tribe/upload/photo/b68/01e/b6801ee2-e814-4f4d-bbd5-edbcd0da63d6.thumb" width="65" height="65" alt="" />
    </a>
										<div>
I've been using a service called Twitter for awhile and have been loving it. One of the coolest things about it is the ability for people to post status updates (like on Facebook) but those status updates are delivered straight to your phone via text messages.

So I started thinking about how useful this could be... I wish I knew when parties were busted before I left the house (although that'll never happen with us!). OR maybe if everyone got text messages, we could start doing interesting things with secret passwords... secret locations... scavenger hunts... We could really take things to a whole new level.

So please join this experiment with me. Send a text message 40404 with "follow ninjaskillz" to receive mobile updates about awesome events in SoCal. The updates won't be too frequent, but they'll certainly be worth it. This is not just to let you know about events, but it will also be used to create brand new experiences... imagine if we all gathered in a park and 300 people all simultaneously received a text message with instructions to [insert action here].

I'm sure you all get the picture ;-)

Please pass this on to anyone you would normally invite to our kind of events. Think of it as a birthday present to me. Zero Tolerance For Assholes! No creeps!

And before vicious rumors start spreading that you'll get charged for signing up, these are just standard texts messages. So if you can receive text, sign up!

text message 40404 with the phrase: follow ninjaskillz

Love you lots!

										<div>I decided to write an article on how to find a good job in a bad economy. This is based on how I landed my dream job, what I would've done differently, and how I feel about applicants now that my company is looking for people. Please feel free to leave me a comment there! I'm trying to get into the habit of writing more (I've previously worked for two college newspapers) and I would love to heard your feedback.

A lot of my friends love funky music like house or breaks. So do I, but I'm also a fan of the energy-driven spacey sounds of psytrance. Most of my groove loving friends won't go near psychedelic trance with a 10 foot pole. I mean, the house music scene is kind of derived from the disco days of bellbottoms and afros. That is a world very far removed from the world of aliens, hindu gods and alternate dimensions. For the uninitiated, these themes are as associated with the psy scene as vampires and black are associated with the goth scene... or crying and cutting is with the emo scene.

But wait. Can't hyperdimensional alien being get their funk and groove on too?

That was the idea behind this mix. Psychedelic Space Disco. Hope you enjoy the experiment. If you are immediately anything anti-psy, just give this a try. I think its different enough ;-)

    </a>
										<div>So there are 2 types of promoters in this world. Responsible Promoters and Irresponsible Promoters. As it turns out, some Irresponsible Promoters organized an event at the SAME location as our HOMECOMING event was supposed to be on the night before our event. It brought down the wrath of the local officials and effectively shut the space completely down.

We scrambled and ran around frantically trying to obtain another location where we could give you the event that we promised you... and we just couldn't find one. We love our family and don't ever want them to spend their hard earned cash on a half-assed party. As such, we are going to have to cancel HOMECOMING.

We HATE to do this. This sort of this is right up there on the list of things that we as organizers NEVER want to have to do. However, we owe it to you to throw the absolute best event that we can. Something that exceeds your expectations.

ALL PRESALES WILL BE REFUNDED.

Fear not! For all of you decom party peeps, the folks at Space Island and Trinity are throwing an afterparty.
http://www.spaceisland.org

They have a killer lineup and a great location.

We hope this reaches you in time to plan your night. Please accept our most humble apologies. Had this been within our control, things would have gone differently.

Carnegie Mellon Professor Randy Pausch (Oct. 23, 1960 - July 25, 2008) gave his last lecture at the university Sept. 18, 2007, before a packed McConomy Auditorium. In his moving presentation, "Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams," Pausch talked about his lessons learned and gave advice to students on how to achieve their own career and personal goals.
I'm playing downtempo at Elysium Midsummer Festival!

<div>I have something horrible to admit. I've never gone to Elysium. During the last couple years, I was either really overloaded with work or had another gig on the same weekend. In fact, the first year I sent my aunt and uncle down to check it out and my plans had changed last minute and they were left to fend for themselves! However, when my friends would come back, they would tell me stories about how awesome it was to have both bands and DJs, and I've seen some of the live performances from SoCal's top fire groups on YouTube that blew me away.

So this year, I am excited to finally be going to Elysium and I'll be playing downtempo during the day. Those of you who know me well or have known me throughout college know that I have a very deep love of downtempo and now I get to share that love with many of you. For you music heads, I'm lettting you know right now that I love stuff off of FatCat, Warp, Planet-Mu, etc... Expect to hear anything from Sigur Ros to Plaid... Prefuse 73 to Boards of Canada... Mum to Lamb... Bjork to Bluetech... I frequently attend IDM events in Los Angeles, listen to Morning Becomes Eclectic regularly, and generally just love to chill out.

Well, now you know what to expect from me. Hope to see you at Elysium!

										<div>This is my favorite type of event.... mythical backstory and out in the middle of nature... also, I made some calls and got Tommy (aka Hyjynx) added to the lineup even though he is not listed on the flier. Make sure to give him plenty of love and let the organizers know how much it is appreciated. They haven't heard him play before, but they heard of his loss and thought it was the least they could do.

    </a>
										<div>He looked vaguely familiar, thought Phoenix. Was it Tianguan, God of Fortune? Or perhaps Taiyi, God of Heaven? The mysterious Golden Figure flew westward beneath the full moon. His aura was like that of a Buddha, dispelling darkness wherever he went. He was a lantern in the night. Phoenix pursued. To what strange and wonderful place would this light lead her to tonight?

Excerpt from the Londonist...
---------------
What is Rickmob? First of all, you need to know Rick Astley... Then you need to know the bizarre but sometimes hilarious phenomenon of Rickrolling on the internet. And then refresh your knowledge about flashmobs and the variations upon a meme.

And then you need to imagine all those elements colliding on the concourse of Liverpool Street station on Friday 11 April at 6pm. That's right: an entire train station is going to be rickrolled. Makes your eyes water, though that could be the effects of the high note in the first verse.
---------------

This is, also after the New York Mets got RockRolled in a huge way.

<div>According to my hit tracker, OVER 50 people downloaded this happy hardcore mix from the year 2000. This is what candy ravers were rocking out to a decade ago. Hope you all got out your glowsticks and fairywings!

For those of you who didn't know, this mix was my April fools joke. Nick, Jesse, Krystal, Amy, Jules, Genevieve and everyone else who posted an overwhelmingly positive review were all in on it. I didn't get very many comments on it, so I'm assuming the silence was a result of mass confusion (And 50 people too afraid to say something like "WTF are you thinking?"). Awesome.

It's my hour long version of a Rick Roll =)

Happy April Fools!</div>

A new mix for download! The new sound of 2008!!!

<div>There has definitely been a wave of darker and much slower music to hit dancefloors as of late. Personally, it's just much harder for me to groove to these slower tempos since I was never much of a hip hop dance club guy. However, I *can* dance halftime to tracks that are twice as fast as these slower styles of music. I just need that little bit of extra energy to keep me bouncing, smiling and happy all night.

I understand the need for change and different sounds than what we hear every weekend, so I started looking for something that was energetic (like drum n bass), and roughly twice the speed of the slower styles so people easily dance to it at half time groove. I also wanted something that incorporated the straight beat of house music with a slight touch of vocals to keep the ladies happy, a mixup of some oldschool melodies with futuristic synths behind them, a hint of the circus and carnival-like atmosphere to reflect the nature of our performance oriented community, and maybe a touch of real instruments such as pianos for those who did not grow up on electronic music and find it easier to relate to acoustic instruments.

So I found a musical style that hits all these points and I think it may very well be the new direction of 2008. It's quite a bit different than what you are used to and it may take awhile for your mind and ears to adjust to this new sound and new speed, but give it a full listen (or two) and you will understand the happiness this music can bring you in the future. I'm warning you. Be prepared. This music is only for hardcore electronic music lovers.

    </a>
										<div>I LOVE POCKET. Every single time I hear any of their DJs spin, I need to grab a napkin. TECH + PROG + GROOVE = HAPPINESS. This is Pocket's first party in like... 87 years... It's also capped at 300 people due to the location's capacity so you should get your presales soon if you want to go.

There's also a downtempo area featuring LALA (Los Angeles Lounge Association) as well. They make me want to cuddle. Anyone who heard Faith during Sunrise at Fuente knows what I mean.

Oh, and this party is BYOB which I haven't seen in awhile (although my intake has been a lot more moderate since Fuente thanks to a certain Ms. TINSLEY). It's all her fault. Info below...

======================
Saturday April 5th Pocket has a special treat for you. This is not a big club night . . . it’s not a warehouse party filled with people you don’t know . . . it’s an intimate night in an intimate venue for all of us . . . our family, our friends, all of you that have supported us, played with us, danced with us, laughed with us. We’re not collaborating, we’re not playing for someone else . . . this is gonna be an good old fashioned Pocket Party.

It’s a night focused on the music. Pocket DJ’s bringing the dirty funk in one room and LALA bringing the juicy sexy down-tempo in the other. No over priced drinks served by snooty bartenders, no club prices . . . in fact, there’s no bar at all. Old school bitchez - save your money and bring your own. We’ll have a little mixer bar with cups, ice and mixers. Bring what you wanna drink . . . dance like you mean it. No glitz, no glammor . . . just family and music.

This place is small, holds 300 tops. Please get yourself a pre-sale ticket to ensure you get in. Once we hit 300 we're done, and if we do it all in pre-sales then there'll be no tickets at the door. Quality over quantity people. Pre-sales are $15, $20 at the door. Cash only. 21 + BYOB

<div>Thank you to
Saynt, Michael Insane, Turo and Blue for being in Mexico since LAST WEEKEND clearing the area, building, bridges, repairing bathrooms, etc. Saynt and Blue for organizing the event.
Brutus, Rabbit, Sandbag and Smokeblower and everyone from Fluid Sound for the stage sound lighting and visuals.
Wolfie for acting like he was working the event and helping deal with tons of small issues without ever being asked.
Lisa Han for her performing arts magic.
Spaceman and Adam Rosen for working the gate nearly 10 hours and all the rest of the gate volunteers
All the performers for their fire, music and dancing
EVERYONE who was there for being so cool
All of my friends for taking care of me and making sure I didn't experience a single hangover (I have no clue how that happened)
All of the NEW friends I met (and there are a few too many to mention, but Lover and Boozer, Yair, Ryan and Tila get special mentions)

And of course all the people that went the extra mile to make sure I had good and safe time... Especially (wow, I am so going to leave so many people out) Mike Insane, Lisa Han, Bianca, Josh Stocker, Cramos, Beck, Porter Tinsley, Dacia, Maria, Cade, JP. Jules, Genevieve, Carla, Christian, Mae-mae, Wolfie, Jenn, Klear, Sammy Bliss, Nick the Neck, Krystal Bell, J. Cush, MBIAT, Juice, Vixxen, Awno, Curious Josh, all the Orangekids, RLD, Pocket, Liquid-O and... I'm missing so many people but there were and I'll remember more later as I recover, but seriously, I can even believe how many people made this weekend just an absolutely mindblowingly incredible experience.

wow. I am so filled with love, and I sometimes forget just how much love surrounds me all the time. This was a reminder.

All I can do is say thanks, I hope everyone realizes that it is so great when we all take care of each other and make sure we all have a great time. </div>

Electro Funk and Dirty Bass - Burn this mix for your road trips....

<div>A FUNKY, DIRTY Mix for you to burn onto CD and listen to (on the way to Mexico?)

I thought I wasn't going to spin Fuente Eterno (but I will late Thursday night 2am) so I put together a mix of the FUNKIEST, DIRTIEST tracks I could get my hands on. A lot of you have such a long way to go to make it to the border of Mexico, so Dr. Zabala thought he'd prescribe you a good dose of filthy electro (glitched up a bit) with a bit of breaks thrown in for good measure. If you're in the United States this weekend, listen to it anyway if you absolutely MUST move your body. And yes, Dr. Zabala is my crazy uncle. He prescribes all sorts of things... dance music, cowbell, and muscle relaxants (which are used to combat the side effects of the first two).

For all of you that love my dark, techier sound, wait for Robofunk Beta which will be released very soon. For every light mix, there must be a dark one... such is the balance of the universe... </div>
