I have something horrible to admit. I've never gone to Elysium. During the last couple years, I was either really overloaded with work or had another gig on the same weekend. In fact, the first year I sent my aunt and uncle down to check it out and my plans had changed last minute and they were left to fend for themselves! However, when my friends would come back, they would tell me stories about how awesome it was to have both bands and DJs, and I've seen some of the live performances from SoCal's top fire groups on YouTube that blew me away. So this year, I am excited to finally be going to Elysium and I'll be playing downtempo during the day. Those of you who know me well or have known me throughout college know that I have a very deep love of downtempo and now I get to share that love with many of you. For you music heads, I'm lettting you know right now that I love stuff off of FatCat, Warp, Planet-Mu, etc... Expect to hear anything from Sigur Ros to Plaid... Prefuse 73 to Boards of Canada... Mum to Lamb... Bjork to Bluetech... I frequently attend IDM events in Los Angeles, listen to Morning Becomes Eclectic regularly, and generally just love to chill out. According to my hit tracker, OVER 50 people downloaded this happy hardcore mix from the year 2000. This is what candy ravers were rocking out to a decade ago. Hope you all got out your glowsticks and fairywings! For those of you who didn't know, this mix was my April fools joke. Nick, Jesse, Krystal, Amy, Jules, Genevieve and everyone else who posted an overwhelmingly positive review were all in on it. I didn't get very many comments on it, so I'm assuming the silence was a result of mass confusion (And 50 people too afraid to say something like "WTF are you thinking?"). Awesome. There has definitely been a wave of darker and much slower music to hit dancefloors as of late. Personally, it's just much harder for me to groove to these slower tempos since I was never much of a hip hop dance club guy. However, I *can* dance halftime to tracks that are twice as fast as these slower styles of music. I just need that little bit of extra energy to keep me bouncing, smiling and happy all night. I understand the need for change and different sounds than what we hear every weekend, so I started looking for something that was energetic (like drum n bass), and roughly twice the speed of the slower styles so people easily dance to it at half time groove. I also wanted something that incorporated the straight beat of house music with a slight touch of vocals to keep the ladies happy, a mixup of some oldschool melodies with futuristic synths behind them, a hint of the circus and carnival-like atmosphere to reflect the nature of our performance oriented community, and maybe a touch of real instruments such as pianos for those who did not grow up on electronic music and find it easier to relate to acoustic instruments. So I found a musical style that hits all these points and I think it may very well be the new direction of 2008. It's quite a bit different than what you are used to and it may take awhile for your mind and ears to adjust to this new sound and new speed, but give it a full listen (or two) and you will understand the happiness this music can bring you in the future. Thank you to Saynt, Michael Insane, Turo and Blue for being in Mexico since LAST WEEKEND clearing the area, building, bridges, repairing bathrooms, etc. Saynt and Blue for organizing the event. Brutus, Rabbit, Sandbag and Smokeblower and everyone from Fluid Sound for the stage sound lighting and visuals. Wolfie for acting like he was working the event and helping deal with tons of small issues without ever being asked. Lisa Han for her performing arts magic. Spaceman and Adam Rosen for working the gate nearly 10 hours and all the rest of the gate volunteers All the performers for their fire, music and dancing EVERYONE who was there for being so cool All of my friends for taking care of me and making sure I didn't experience a single hangover (I have no clue how that happened) All of the NEW friends I met (and there are a few too many to mention, but Lover and Boozer, Yair, Ryan and Tila get special mentions) And of course all the people that went the extra mile to make sure I had good and safe time... Especially (wow, I am so going to leave so many people out) Mike Insane, Lisa Han, Bianca, Josh Stocker, Cramos, Beck, Porter Tinsley, Dacia, Maria, Cade, JP. Jules, Genevieve, Carla, Christian, Mae-mae, Wolfie, Jenn, Klear, Sammy Bliss, Nick the Neck, Krystal Bell, J. Save the World :) I have updated news. Went to visit her in the hospital this morning and sign all the paperwork for medication and for her to be released. She did receive morphine yesterday but as of today the doctors did not want to put her on any pain medication because of her type of injury to her head. They are only allowing her to take over the counter Tylenol and Ibuprofen, so as you can imagine with a fractured skull and pressure in the brain from bleeding, she's not that comfortable without pain medication. She had tried to walk before I got there and was not able to. She could barely talk because of the pain and barely move for that matter, but regardless of all that she was discharged and was released to go home. I was graciously supported by Curious Josh, Ramie, and KT today, all of which were instrumental in getting Lynnnsane from the hospital back to her comfy bed in Long Beach while I ran off to take care of the reality of my crazy real world and business. Lynn is currently bed ridden for atleast 3 weeks. At the hospital the doctors were only allowing people to visit for 5 minutes every hour because the brain activity can overstimulate the brain and cause pain. She could barely communicate because the pain was so bad so inital visitation is going to have to be monitored and coordinated. Wolfie has volunteered to take this on and coordinate it so make sure to contact him at djwolfie@djwolfie.com and also put in your availability into the calendar he created. Check out his most recent blog for information. At this time its going to be a slow transition into allowing people to visit her, but I assure you over the next two months, she is going to appreciate the love and support and the presence of people there. Luckily one of her closest friend's and also a fellow ER Nurse at Long Beach Memorial Hospital, Charles, will be staying with her tonight and potentially the next 3 nights to attend to her needs and any potential complications and/or care that she needs. And that's all for now folks... Have a beautiful night. Thank you all once again for your love and support. I have been inundated with phone calls, tribe messages, and text messages. Anything you wish to pass on or communicate to Lynn you may send me. She is very appreciative and grateful as well as I.
