ONLINE HOOPING VIDEO OF THE YEAR:
“Vulcan Tech Blog 4” -- www.youtube.com/watch
Awesome hoop moves by Khan, Rich, Poki, Brian, etc. and also examples of other forms of object manipulation that inform and deepen hooping. I know it’s not limited to being just a hoop video, but I dig this one. Thanks, Vulcan.
FAVORITE 2008 HOOP TRACK
DJ Felli Fel "Get Buck in Here.” It’s the Revolvies. That’s what I revolved to all summer. Shut up.
OUTSTANDING NEWBIE HOOPER
Brian “Holy crap, how is he doing that?” Thompson
See beginning of Vulcan Tech Blog 4. I believe he began manipulating hoops after I met his Eugene, OR juggling troupe last winter (so beginning of 2008), and now he's in the Bay Area doing awesome stuff with the equally awesome Poki. Any new hooper can learn a series of typical moves in under a year. NOT every new hooper can do this. Brian's a super talented guy.

COMMUNITY HOOP GROUP OF THE YEAR
The Detroit Hoopers
I’m sad that I didn’t promote this to people who understand how much good work the Detroit Hoopers have done in the past few years – and who could’ve voted to nominate them for a “Hoopie.” It’s the bane of Detroit’s existence that its human outflow is greater than its inflow, so no matter what kind of amazing things happen there, they won’t be widely known.
That said, Detroit deserves a nod for its contribution to hooping. In 2007, the Detroit Hoopers gave away THREE HUNDRED hoops for World Hoop Day (which was, I believe, the most given away in the world for that year). In 2008, the Detroit Hoopers once again did World Hoop Day proud by working in conjunction with the Black Rock Arts Foundation, the Detroit Dream Project, Motor City Blight Busters and Society to Promote Art & Recreation in the Community (SPARC) to put on a day-long hoop extravaganza for Detroit families.
Many of you who have been to Burning Man and seen the temple may not know that in 2008, David Best (designer of said temple) worked with a crew of Detroit volunteers to build a temple IN DETROIT. It’s called “The Temple of the American Dream,” it’s part of a community art park – in a neighborhood that really needs it, and it’s so beautiful that I get choked up thinking about it. World Hoop Day Detroit 2008 took place at The Temple of the American Dream, and all those above-mentioned organizations played a part in funding, promoting and helping out with the event. I came back to Detroit to take part, and we gave away around 100 hoops – with some left over that were going to be donated at a later date. The Detroit Hoopers also treated kids and parents to a DJ and bumpin’ sound system, shared food, convinced the Detroit Fire Department to stop by and hoop – and just generally organized an amazing event.
This is in addition to a constantly growing range of year-round hoop events in the Motor City. Various people are teaching classes and performing and sharing hooping as community outreach. And no matter where I revolve on earth, Revolva will always rep-ra-zent for the D. So, yeah – totally biased. I don’t care because the Detroit hoop community deserves a major shout out. A 2008 Revolvie goes to the Detroit Hoopers!

PERFORMANCE GROUP OF THE YEAR
Color Wheel
If everyone’s already done something one way, how can we build on what already exists to create that which does not already exist? How can we express creativity in our own, unique way? “Color Wheel” is a troupe that embodies the answer to those questions. They look like a crazy dream that came to life, and they are pushing mega-boundaries in terms of movement, costuming and staging. I applaud them for a refreshing amount of creativity. Let's have more innovation like this in 2009:

FIRE HOOPER OF THE YEAR
Spiral, Jewels, Shakti
I was surprised not to see these names make it through the nomination round for a Hoopie. Multiple fire hoops, mini fire hoops, hot moves! Come on over here and accept your Revolvie, girlfriends.

MALE HOOPER OF THE YEAR
Tie between two dudes I didn't see on the Hoopie list:
Dustin Hubel
This kid doesn't get enough credit for how insanely, insanely good he is. He's doing behind the back weaves and hoop moves I haven't ever seen anyone else do. I had the opportunity to perform with him once this fall and also watch him rehearse at the Portland juggling club (before he recently took a hiatus from PDX). He is a master at the mini hoops, and he deserves a standing ovation for his tight technical skills. He also deserves to be picked up by a circus. He also deserves a Revolvie.
www.youtube.com/watch
Poki
Well, those who have witnessed the magic of Poki probably don’t know whether to be more enraptured by his stage presence or his rad hoop moves. I first saw him this summer doing a hilarious street show, involving his signature, mini red hoop, the Olympic Trials and a dream about stealing a ring from the Olympic logo. Next, I saw him killing it with his combo of clown aesthetics and masterful object manipulation at Oregon Country Fair.
After the Sunday night fire show at OCF, some little kids ran up to where Poki and I were chatting. They said, “You were awesome! You were our favorite! We loved you the most out of anyone!” They were staring lovingly at Poki. When they awoke from their haze of adoration long enough to notice me, they said, “Oh, and you were our second favorite!” I took it in stride. Poki’s one of MY favorites, too. A Revolvie to you, sir.

Good luck Hoopie nominees. Congrats, Revolvie award-ees. Now, I've got to figure out how I can manufacture some trophies created entirely out of respect and devotion.

WOOT WOOT!
way to go babe. There is a need for more hoopie award categories and more promotion of different hoopers. I really agree with your fire hooper of the year nominations COMPLETELY. We all deserve a hoopie award!

Thanks Revolva! This was an absolute pleasure!
Some of your nominations lined up with my own: "Vulcan Tech Blog 4" - I just watched this today and was incredibly delighted. Poki and Brian are surely great nominations. I'm just becoming familiar with Poki and am trying to get him (and perhaps his counterpart Brian) out to Hoop Convergence 09. Color Wheel!! Hell yes, they are rockin' it. Malcolm, the lead choreographer of this troupe, is one of the original members of Groovehoops and is one of my first hooping inspirations / crushes=) I'm STOKED he (and I hope some of his circling crew) WILL BE reprezentin' at Hoop Convergence this year. I was VERY disappointed there was not a category for straight up hoop performer of the year - rather than performance group. I almost put you in this category anyways (your stage presence makes up for the lack of other dancers=) but instead I put you down for female hooper of the year. Revolvie sounds better than Jewelsie, so I'd like you to save one of those revolvies for yourself girl! I greatly appreciate the nod for fire hooping with doubles along with two sisters in spin=) I can't wait to see the trophy. Great work from the Detroit crew!...(Maybe there's something to be said for not talking about what you did in the community or camping online, but being out in the community building parks and givin' away hoops!) AND an A-WOMAN for Sacred G Hooping.... Thanks for the transcendental meditation, Kara Maia. oOoOoOoOoOo |

Excellent Idea
And I agree with Jewels about Outstanding Performance Hooper. You have more stage craft and presence than any other hooper out there in my opinion. I would vote for you too.
I didn't even vote in the Hoopies this year. It's cool to recognize outstanding people but I'd prefer it if there weren't "winners" and "losers". What I would prefer is to have people write nomination letters that tell why they admire different hoopers, routines and groups. That would be rad! And I would totally nominate you for that fashion show performance. I love that. |

I'm enjoying reading others' thoughts about the Hoopies. And the REVOLVIES. I have more comments on awards, especially those that ultimately honor people who have large online contact lists and a desire to campaign. Because I don't know what that really means. But I'm too tired to write much more, and maybe we could talk about it on the Hoopers Journal.
For now, I'd just like to say that awe-inspiring, tear-jerking acceptance speeches, full of thank you's and shout outs to your parents and your homies and Philo and Jesus are TOTALLY welcome in this blog! And if you didn't get a REVOLVIE (or a Hoopie nomination), why don't you just post a comment that proclaims what kind of "Outstanding [fill-on-the-blank] Hooper of 2008" YOU are and then make your acceptance speech? That would be great fun. I'd love to hear it. |

Revolva, I love your creatvity, your ability to speak your mind, and your strong heart. This was great to read. It was a joy to read your opinions with great commentary on each person's/groups merit. I in know way mean this to sound as trite as it will, but we all deserve a "hoopie" or "revolvie" or just a celebration of ourselves for spreading the hoop love. The hoop (and hooper) has the power to transform lives, create harmony and bring beauty to an often dark world. I say "hell yeah" to all of us for continuing this lightness. Love to you!

Ah, I'm free to do whatever I want in my own awards system, so I can add new categories, daily. For two people who replied who also weren't honored yet (Ann, you got a nod through HoopPath and Megzzz is up for female hooper) ...
OUTSTANDING 2008 HEALING OF SELF AND OTHERS THROUGH HOOPING Bonnie There's no doubt that some years are harder than others. Between the health of her newborn son, financial difficulties and struggles with her own health, Bonnie had a pretty heavy burden to contend with in 2008. I think every video she posted last year showed a quiet will to survive in the midst of what must have, at times, been sharp and nearly unbearable pain. I was having a hard year, too, as I'm especially vulnerable to depression -- so I took some strength from Bonnie's example of just ... forging ahead. I actually cried when I watched this video of her hooping in the hospital, for her son River: www.youtube.com/watch By now, she has hooped her way into 2009, a brand new year -- and hopefully, a lighter one. But for showing us all how the hoop can be an instrument of healing, and how spiraling motion (known by galaxies, whirling dervishes, and all aspects of nature) can help us transcend into a state where our spirits can't be broken, Bonnie gets huge props in the Revolvies. As they say, "standing O," lady! OUTSTANDING CREATIVITY IN EVERY POSSIBLE WAY Caroleeena! Here she is, ONLY waist hooping and still somehow exuding so much sass, good humor and fun: www.youtube.com/watch Who else could raise a dancing bird? Then again, I'd dance if I were living in a house where this happened on the regular: www.youtube.com/watch She writes poetry that causes other artists to become inspired, and then this happens: www.youtube.com/watch She writes poetry to deliver into the world with her beautiful voice: www.youtube.com/watch She dresses like the world's friggin' sexiest vampire to read yet another creative work: www.youtube.com/watch And best of all, in 2008, she told me to call this phone number: 1-800-393-5297 (Call it, you'll love it.) Viva la Caroleeena! |

This made me laugh a lot :-) It's a funny ole business eh? I mean...come on, me nominated as a teacher, Ha! I've only ever taught one real class at hoop camp!!!!! I doubt any one in the Uk would put me down for that category.... I don't like the fact that you can vote everyday, and for yourself!!!!! I mean I am honored but I don't know enough people to even begin to allow me to get anywhere in the Hoopies and I cant be bothered to rally all my non hooping friends either, that just seems wrong. Like I said funny old business.

Well, Sharna, you've got two whole countries behind you! (Not to mention a never ending supply of badass moves; I seriously think you show more constant innovation than anyone I know.) If you win a Hoopie, I suppose you'll at least know people voted based on their own inspiration to do so. If you don't win one, I'll give you a Revolvie. ;)

Oh! I think I would rather have a Revolvie. I am not even sure how I got nominated for a Hoopie, especially considering the caliber of nominees in that category, but I can't help be excited and grateful just for the nod.
I may have to start my own awards show. Revolva, you get the first Lucy. Performer of the New Millennia. Every time you post a performance video I am struck by the pure professionalism, talent, creativity and preparedness you display. Congratulations. I won't post videos but additional Lucy's go to Rich, Khan, Sharna, Spiral, HoopPath...ah, there are so many it's going to be a long show. Keep your speeches to a minimum, please. So thank you all for the inspiration, love and friendship. I'd also like to thank my dogs, who were always there for me...wait I have no dogs. |
|
Wed, January 14, 2009 - 4:51 PM
Oh my gosh, the "Lucy" is so cute! Way cuter than "Revolvie." Maybe we should establish a ton of awards shows and then have the awards shows compete for best awards show? That would be surreal!
And thank you for your small acceptance speech, giving a shout out to your non-existent dogs. I love it! |

Wed, January 14, 2009 - 5:02 PM
Oh, wait a minute. I got a Lucy, so I also get to make a speech.
(Ahem) Wow. I'm shocked that all of you Lucians banded together to vote for ME! I really can't believe that I won, but I'd like to take this opportunity to thank beer for always being there for me when I get off stage. I'd also like to thank my eyelash glue, pop songs of the 80s and my ever-increasing amount of wigs, without whom I wouldn't be able to do ri-donk-ulous performances, enjoyed by Lucians around the planet ... I mean, around Austin, TX. I hope that you will continue to like me, I mean reeeeally, reeeeeaalllly like me in 2009! Thank you!" [Turning away from podium, tripping over my ball gown, dropping my Lucy, spilling my drink ...] |

Thanks Revolva for your sweet comments. It's amazing how powerful the hoop is and the hooping community. I'm not sure how we (being my family) all would have survived this year without all the support from everyone. It was amazing to have the powerful local support of course, but the greater support through tribe was mind-blowing. Thanks also for posting this link. I haven't watched any of the videos from that segment of last year. River and I watched it together in silence. I cried. We have both come so far. Both healthy and continuing on our ways. Last night I taught my first hoop class. A dream of mine for awhile, passing on the healing energy of the hoop to others, was realized as 21 beautiful, diverse women stood with me and learned to hoop. My dear sister Mary really pushed me these last few months, as I got stronger, to make this a reality. She is one of many who deserve countless awards in my book. I am just glad that all of us have the hoop, and the greater community as we live our daily lives. You can't lose with that combination.
Love to you my Detroit Sister! I do have to say as a fellow Detroit native and lover, that I am so grateful to you for all you do for our city. Thank you...Detroit needs hooping more than it needs the auto industry right now....get people feeling good about themselves and giving them hope for tomorrow. Peace |

I have been laughing and tearing up throughout this exchange. Couldn't agree more with all of the awards given, particularly those for my sister Bonnie. And strangely, I am left with this strong regret that I'm not from Detroit. What about Smithfield, NC? Home of tobacco, pig farmers and the KKK? Can I get a Lucy or a Revolvie for having escaped from there and survivied long enough to find the hoop?
