I've seen countless people arrive at their first crossroads in life, pick a direction more or less intuitively, and march down their chosen road, never to look back. I could never do that. It took me the longest time to figure out that finding a ready-made role to suit me was a stupid thing to do... much better to be myself and craft a role to suit me. Again to the suit metaphor: it's always better to have a suit tailored than it is to try to squeeze yourself into one straight from the store rack, but it's much more expensive!
