DeMystifying Choreography Workshop (events » arts) Sunday, July 27, 2008 - 2:00 PM You've been taking bellydance classes for a while, you really enjoy the moves, you want to put a piece together...and maybe you get stuck. It could be finding the right music, matching moves to the music, adding sufficient variety, or maintaining a certain style. In this workshop Sahira shares her choreography process as well as tips on other methods. We also compare the benefits of improv and choreography, and work with each. This workshop is for experienced bellydancers.

Torso Time: Concentrated Torso Isolations and Movement Combinations
Time: 11:00am - 1:00pm
Work out your middle with a series of isolation drills that target the abs and back. We'll connect the isolations into movements and the movements into hot torso-heavy combinations you can use in improv and choreography alike.

I Love the 80's: 80's Inspired Tribal Combinations
Time: 2:00pm - 4:00pm
We may be showing our age, but this set of tribal combos brings back fond memories of some of the greatest icons of the 80's. Have fun learning some new things and maybe find some inspiration of your own. Please bring a full skirt and kneepads.

Workshops with Sonya of Arabesque Chicago (events » arts) Saturday, April 4, 2009 - 11:30 AM Stage Makeup and Presence

Time: 11:30am - 1:00pm

Workshop fee : $30 early registration, $40 starting March 11

Dancing under stage lights requires a different approach in how you apply make-up. This workshop will spend time discussing the proper techniques, appropriate styles & brand/types that help make you shine as a belly dancer! How-to flatter any face shape or skin type or just play down the less-good points--feel free to bring your questions & your make-up, if you'd care to follow along; workshop will also cover daily make-up, night time make-up & performance make-up when not on an actual stage. Stage presence is not just something you're born with, the fundamentals can also be learned in this workshop to help you become a stand out in the line-up!
*No Pre-Requisite, bring any questions, a notebook and pen for notes.

(Sonya is a licenced cosmetologist in IL with extensive theater make-up training, in addition to her working knowlegde of dance make-up as a performer herself, on the stage since 1997.)

Shimmy Essentials Meets Layers and Traveling

Time: 2:30pm - 4:30pm
Location: Synergy RaD Studio
Workshop fee : $40 early registration, $50 starting March 11

Shimmie technique can be broken down in many ways, as there are lots of shimmies we can do with different parts of our bodies (more than 10 types of shimmie will be introduced in this class). Focusing mainly on shoulders, hands & hips, this will be fully a movement class, working 1-on-1 with shimmie technique, breaking it down for skill, then up the tempo to build proper speed before maintaining the speed for increased stamina. Once stamina is achieved we'll work clean layering of complimentary moves as well as traveling with the shimmie.

Great for all levels of dancer who wants more from their shimmies! Participants should have a strong understanding of fundamental belly dance movements to get the most out of this workshop. Please wear typical workout attire, bring a towel & a light snack if desired, cold water… In other words be prepared for a workout—Handouts Included so Sweat is Welcomed!
