Ok. So this was the first time I performed with live music. I was pretty damn nervous, but had a lot of fun.

And I just love that Djinn, yo!

My own studio!

I am super excited about my new studio. As a dear friend said, one door closes and another opens. I really liked THRIVE and Peggy's one neato lady, but I'm also thrilled to venture out on my own. The timing seems quite serendipitous, since a dance studio just came available and some of my lovely Sirens are ready to start teaching in August. I'm contacting other folks in town, trying to add Pilates and other types of dance classes to my schedule. We're going to have a grand opening on August 10 to celebrate and introduce new classes. A million times yay!

Chicago fun!

I love going up to Chicago for bellydance stuff. This past weekend I went up for Shoshanna's workshop and show. Chellcy brought her in from Cali, what a treat! Shoshanna taught some 9/8, some 4 yard veil, and some drum solo. And the show was fun too. I performed my new fusion piece with stool and 3 veils, and the floor was a little slippery so the stool wasn't cooperating super-well, but it worked out ok. The whole show was great, 'twas a bummer Chellcy couldn't dance though! And just when I thought I might have enough veils (over 20 at last count), now I need to get some 4-yarders cause that was so fun.

The only real problem is that after getting home I discovered that I left one of my cosmetic bags hanging on the hotel bathroom door. I have to replace lots of my stage makeup like my Benefit Bluffing stick, my HiP eyeshadow stick, my Mac eyeliner, my tweezer, my blush brush...ay carumba.

But it was great to connect with Chicago dancers again, they've got such a vibrant dance community up there! And I heard about this new Chicago Bellydance Underground group...hm, intriguing, no?

I have such a surreal life. The same day I found out I got onto the program at the most prestigious conference in my field (San Fran next January--w00t!), one of my friends calls me and says,

"So I got my TCStyle in the mail today."
"Yeah, is the article in there?"
"YEAH. And this woman I know is on the cover!"

"Um, whatnow?"

Surreal. There's no hiding now! This went out to everyone who subscribes to the local paper. I wonder if any of my econ students are going to bring this up when classes resume next week. Time will tell!

artwork -- Medusa painting

The studio we use for level 1 and drills has a new art exhibit. The pieces have caused lots of discussions about art, aesthetics, and prices. Last night I shared that my dh and I recently purchased an acrylic we found in NYC. It's a painting of Medusa by Brad Peterson. I find Medusa a fascinating character. She's much maligned, but I don't believe she deserves it. She only got violent after the nasty treatment she received from men. Anyway... here's the painting. I love it!

A local reporter came to my level 2 class this Tuesday and interviewed me and some of my students for an upcoming article. She was really nice, and I get the distinct impression that she will represent us well. I think the article's coming out in the March issue of TC Style magazine (http://www.tcstyle.com/), so it'll be a while, but I'll post a link when it's out.

We started a new level 1 session last night. I have a great group of ladies, even the introduction-go-round was fun! And one of my students who is starting her 3rd level 1 session shared a benefit she's seen from dancing. She used to walk with a cane due to arthritis in her hip and knee, and since she's been bellydancing, her hips and knees are stronger and she now walks without a cane! How awesome is that?!?

It's just another day, right?!? I'm not a big fan of resolutions, and yet, I've made a few. In order to solidify these goals, I've created an account at 43things.com -- that site and it's sister sites 43places, allconsuming, and listsofbests are great ways to pass (waste?) vast buckets of time.

But procrastination isn't one of my 43 things....

I hope 2008 brings you all gobs of fun and frolic!
