POPS, LOCKS AND TICK TOCKS

Taught by the stunningly captivating Asharah, this class focuses on understanding the mechanics of pops, locks and tick tocks and how to incorporate them into your dance. In this workshop, you will learn the about the many cultural origins of this type of movement such as the poppin' and lockin' B-Boys of the 70s and 80s as well as the nuances of experimental electronic music. Asharah will lead students through an intense warm up and then will show students how to break down traditional bellydance movements such as vertical hip figure-8s, interior hip circles, torso undulations, and arm waves into smaller and sharper parts to give your performances a robotic and creepy edge. After drilling these movements, she'll teach a short combination that demonstrates how these movements can be used in a performance.

BIO:
Asharah is a Washington DC-based bellydancer whose performances reflect her love of strong technique, mechanical movement, and powerful expression. While focusing primarily on tribal style bellydance, she has experience in all forms of bellydance, including Turkish Rom and Egyptian oriental. She is a resident instructor at Joy of Motion Dance Center in Washington, DC. She is featured on the groundbreaking DVD Gothic Bellydance: The Darker Side of Fusion and has also performed with one of Washington DC's first gothic world-fusion belly dance troupes, Martiya Possession, at events and clubs around the area. www.asharah.com

My "pierced wings" performance at Tribal Fest 06 went great!

I'm so humbled by the experience! I really have no words to truly describe it. I'm so moved by the audience’s acceptance...interest, the ability to be able to share that experience with our community....the chance to make connections between the different kinds of tribal communities....I could go on but I know that none of my words will do those moments justice...I've posted pictures and a small video clip on the Ascend Tribal Dance tribe, Black Sheep Bellydance tribe, Sharon's tribe....I'll have pix up on my website soon as well (www.ascendtribaldance.com)

I think the introduction I had the announcer say before my piece really set the tone for understanding....this was what I had Guido say:

In this next performance, Sashi of Ascend Tribal Dance combines movements and stylings from modern day Tribal Bellydance with aspects inspired by the Tribal Hindu Thaipusam Festivals of Malaysia in which kavadi frames, cheek and tongue spears are worn in trance-like states to honor Lord Muruga while seeking penance for themselves and their community.

This piece is being performed with great respect and understanding of the tribal cultures which inspire our Tribal Bellydance communities and is in no way meant to shock or offend. Rather, it is meant to present further understanding of the sacred tribal aspects from which our dances derive.

This performance ritual involves actual pierced wings – if this is something that you would not care to see, please feel free to go shopping or enjoy the outdoor stage shows at this time. Namaste.

Performing with my "pierced wings" at Tribal Fest 06!

I'm all geared up for our trip to Sebastopol for Tribal Fest 2006! At the promoter's request, I will be performing a fusion piece of Tribal Bellydance combined with my pierced wings which are inspired by the Tribal Hindu Thaipusam Festivals of Malaysia in which kavadi frames, cheek and tongue spears are worn in trance-like states to honor Lord Muruga while seeking penance for themselves and their community. I’m sure most of you know about this performance because Steve and I have been talking about it with most of you and I know that some of you will be there supporting me…It will be a very transforming experience for all. So send your love and energy my way…It’s always appreciated. I’ll let you know how it goes. ..

GROUP IMPROVISATION FOR TRIBAL FUSION BELLYDANCE

So, does improvisation without cues mean you can read your troupe mates minds? Maybe…..The art of group improvisation is comprised of many factors. These factors include the ability to observe or “read” the self and others, assess the individual and group “vibe” then execute moves within mere moments. In this workshop, you will learn effective ways to understand and trust your troupe mates, discover how they view you and how these perceptions influence your troupe’s dynamic. We will also learn the art of “thinking on your feet” by mapping the thought process and its’ blocks when attempting to execute improvisational moves. All levels welcome. This class is suitable for individuals and troupes. Dress comfortably for movement.

GOTHIC TRIBAL FUSION BELLYDANCE

In this workshop you will learn a full choreography, which showcases the fusion of Tribal Belly Dance with the Gothic/Industrial subculture. We will discuss and learn the fundamentals of Tribal Fusion Bellydance; proper posture and technique, specific moves and transitions, leading and following, group improvisation, dance expression, and costuming. We will also explore and learn ways to infuse the look, personality, music and essence of the Gothic/Industrial subculture into this dynamic dance style. At the end of this workshop, you will take with you the experience of an alluring transcendental journey into the world of Gothic Tribal Fusion Belly Dance. All levels welcome.
