The main point of calling was that it was not chasing. You could not order life to come to you, nor did you actively go after it. The secret was to get behind the eyes of what you wanted to call, become that being's vision, likes, and dislikes, understand by being what your subject wanted to go toward.
One did not get close to the beast by having power over the animal, but by becoming part of that animal's power... You first had to touch the animal with your index finger without its running away.
