Hips still have Fury

   Sun, November 5, 2006 - 1:42 PM
Hips of Fury is a Belly Dance competition located in Palmdale (not too far from Los Angeles). It is billed as an alternative Belly Dance competition for Tribal and Fusion style dancers. It sounded like a fun event so I went. I like going to events where creativity and fusion is encouraged, and I especially like to be as flashy as I want to be and not have to worry about compromising my style. Which brought me to think about how to categorize my style. I generally just call it modern cabaret style, but I've been thinking if I should just label it. Kinda hard. Flashy, athletic Cabaret? ... Maybe it's best I don't label it.

The competition had a nice warm vibe and everyone was friendly and supportive. Much kudos to Faizeh for creating this event and having a venue for all of us Fusion people to express ourselves. I placed first in the Tribaret category and first place in the Ultimate Soloist. I have to admit that having a title such as Ultimate Soloist is pretty rad, and I will wear it proudly. My biggest regret is not being able to watch many of my fabulous fellow competitors, their costumes alone were amazing. Hoping they will consider selling a video of the whole competition, would love to see everyone.

I had to dance in the evening show since I won the Ultimate category, but I was just about spent from dancing 3 times earlier that day. My legs and arms were fatigued and felt like lead performing for the 4th time that day. Hopefully I looked ok, or else everyone in the audience were wondering why the heck I won. I think they will be selling a DVD of the show - It was a great line up of dancers.

Shabnam,

I was fortunate to have taken advantage of the opportunity to participate in your Unmata's Blood Moon 2006 workshop, and to have watched the performance of your troupe and yourself as Queen of Hearts.

You are stunning, pleasant, energetic, funny, and a brilliant performer, as in, you shine big-time. On top of this you seem to be gracious and have a level of confidence so solid that offering support to those around you is part of your nature. I'm so happy that you graced Hips of Fury 2006. I wasn't there, but I know you contributed much to the event. And congrats, by the way, regarding being named Ultimate Soloist-- it's no mystery how that happened, I know you deserve it.

Yes, much love and support to Faizeh for putting on Hips of Fury. I've never been, I just know that Faizeh has put herself fully into producing this annual event, and my sense is that the event will continue to grow on its solid foundation of integrity, and hopefully humor. I can feel the vibe! Thanks so much for adding to it Shabnam, and for writing about it.

Can't find the perfect adjective...
They are all too mundane for this shot. Breathtaking, incredible, amazing; I think I'll just go with - wow.
