the future of tribe...Thu, November 13, 2008 - 12:16 PM
second, let's say tribe gets a much needed injection of venture capital but doesn't do the "shoot itself in the foot" move that it did last time it tried to get a new buyer with vc... can we get the PEOPLE back? i mean the only thing that really made tribe interesting was that it was a hub for every weirdo we knew...
third, lets say it can do the first and slowly starts to get the attention of the second, what kind of new features will it have? will we be able to port in all kinds of feeds and use it to be a hub for all of our interesting weird diverse projects? if so, yay! if not, well, the twitter feature on facebook is banal as hell, but it does provide a modest amount of amusement.
(if anyone wants to friend me over there, my facebook page is under matthew rick, not shady backflash, because that's where i have connected with so many alumni friends.)

I just left FacebookThough all evidence I've seen thus far is tenuous, my gut tells me it really is being used by the intelligence agencies to catalog everything about us. Even if they are not behind it, all they have to do is get the keys to it, and not only will it report about our contact info, social network, political and religious views, place of employment, and off-Facebook-online purchaces, but it is also creating very detailed records of our facial biometrics, which can very easily be used in automated FRT systems worldwide, to find us in any public space, any time. The last straw, for me, was when I tried to create a photo album and got a warning message from Firefox asking me, "do you want to allow Facebook unrestricted access to your computer". No joke. That's what it said. I said, hell no - fuck Facebook. I'm out. I do actually like the status feature, and loved the fact that I could play on their so easily and fluidly on my iPhone. And other than that, the only reason I liked it was that everybody was on there! Let's bring everybody back here!!
In case you hadn't seen it yet, this is my *current* favorite cartoon. Of course, Tribe is too obscure to be included, but...
> because it's so flat and doesn't really consist of much more than twitter with a few extra features...
i'm trying to find time to sit down and learn more about what's going on with tribe. i want to get it back in the game. if we lose this resource, we'll be sorry. tribe is an incredible forum for our community.
facebook? it doesn't even come close to fostering community. i can't share things on facebook--my network there consists of too many people from my past. i want a network that's community-based, like this one.
ooooh, the PAGES i could write on this topic if i had time...
