Odissi Dance Workshop Series in November (events » arts) Saturday, November 10, 2007 - 11:00 AM 34 RSVPs "A sacred temple dance from Orissa, India. Bringing the ancient temple carvings to life."

This workshop will be taught by Nalina, who lives in India 6 months out of the year. Nalina studies Odissi intently while she is there. Nalina's teacher is the daughter-in-law of the man who brought Odissi out of the temples for the general public to study and perform.

NOVEMBER 10 & 17, 2007
- You may only attend on the 17th, if you have attended on the 10th, it is a pre-requisite.

TIME: 11:00AM-3:30PM
Doors open for check in at 10:30AM, workshop will start promptly at 11AM.

Space is limited to 20, so pre-registration is a must.

SATURDAY

Belly Dance Aerobic Warm-up and Temple Dance Stretch - 30 minutes
Taught by Carolena and Megha
Limber up and get your blood flowing with this fun and stimulating warm up and stretch.
*Carolena is an American Council on Exercise Certified Personal Trainer.

True Tribal Basics & Tribal Combinations - 2 hours
Taught by Carolena & Megha
Using fun combinations, we'll breakdown several basic movements and their correct technique from the Tribal vocabulary. You'll walk away with mini-choreographies you can plug into your dance and effective setups for some of the faster moving steps and turns.

Drills for Leading and Following - 1 hour
Taught by Carolena and Megha
Communication is one of the subtle but very exciting aspects of Tribal Style dance. Using a series of simple but challenging drills, learn the concept of Leading and Following, Formations, Cues and Transitions and Music Interpretaion.
*Dancers should know the basics of Taxeem, Bodywave, Hand Floreo and Arm Undulations, Shimmy, Arabic Basic, Egyptian Basic, Pivot Bumps and Choo-choos.

The Trick to Spins and Turns - 1 hour
Taught by Carolena and Megha
Understand how to position the body so that you don't have to work as hard, or get as dizzy. This class will cover slow turns as well as fast turns and spins, including several "undocumented" turns not yet out on video or dvd. This class is for intermediate and advanced dancers skilled in ATS. You will need to know and be able to execute the basic steps: Taxeem, Bodywave, Hand Floreos and Arm Undulations, Shimmy, basic Arabic, basic Eygptian, Pivot Bump and Choo-choo. Bring: zils, a full skirt is recommended but not mandatory.


SUNDAY

Improvisational Choreography - 2 hours
The steps and their variations in combinations, choreographies and improvisation. Musical interpretation, finger cymbals, refinement of technique. Partnering and group work with emphasis on communication between dancers. *Dancers should know the basics of Taxeem, Bodywave, Hand Floreo and Arm Undulations, Shimmy, Arabic Basic, Egyptian Basic, Pivot Bumps and Choo-choos. Or be preceded by True Tribal Basics & Tribal Combinations.

Beyond Basics: Bellyrolls and Flutters - 1 hour
Taught by Carolena
For advanced students; the anatomy of bellyrolls and flutters, technique and application.
*Dancers should know the basics of Taxeem, Bodywave, Hand Floreo and Arm Undulations.

Temple Dance Poses for Stretching and Dancing - 1 hour
Taught by Megha
Learn Indian temple dance poses for stretching and dancing.
Inspired by images of dancers in India and the Woman Power Workout video by Karen Andes and FatChanceBellyDance.
