The Moment
The moment when, after many years
of hard work and a long voyage
you stand in the centre of your room,
house, half-acre, square mile, island, country,
knowing at last how you got there,
and say, I own this,
is the same moment when the trees unloose
their soft arms from around you,
the birds take back their language,
the cliffs fissure and collapse,
the air moves back from you like a wave
and you can’t breathe.
No, they whisper. You own nothing.
You were a visitor, time after time
climbing the hill, planting the flag, proclaiming.
We never belonged to you.
You never found us.
It was always the other way round.
—Margaret Atwood

The intention of this workshop is that you will come away with a deeper appreciation of yourself as a storyteller. You will also come away with a story to tell! When people ask what you did you will be able to say: “I had fun!! I engaged with the great joy that is storytelling. I shared and felt trust. I played some games, I wrote a little bit, I listened to some great stories, I stretched…”
We will:
· share different perspectives through storytelling
· get a sense of the many ways to structure a story
· explore storytelling techniques and approaches
· encourage ‘learning by heart’ (NOT memorizing)
· find a manageable sequence of events within our stories
· play with dynamics and modulation
