Dance Name

I'm thinking about taking on a dance name. For quite a long time I've been against the idea for myself because... I don't know ... it just felt kind of silly.

But after talking with Mia Naja at Rakkasah, I've been rethinking it. In real life she's a high paid lawyer, and she doesn't want people searching for her online about law questions to be bumbarded with her bellydance life. I can appreciate that.

That being said, since I work for the Department of Defense I imaging that whatever dance name I take will be listed as an alias in my FBI file. lol! But that's okay. As long as Joe-schmo down in Contracts isn't able to easily google pictures of me in my costumes, I'll be happy.

So... I'm thinking about Shushanna. It's the ancient Persian version of Suzanne, and it's been my email name since 1997. A few people have already assumed that was my dance name - I actually got listed on the Pop Raqs play bill as Shushanna. So why fight it, I guess.

Do what you are comfotable with. Tanya is my real name, and my dance name. I work in a conservative field with mostly men and I don't want them knowing what I do, but as long as my last name is left off of programs and such I've dogded the google snoops. I have taken precautionary measures with my website, I pay an extra fee to ensure that my name isn't attached to the domain registration but besides that I've had no issues.
My full name is way way way too unique to use but first names are very innocuous. If you are happy with Shushanna then go with it, but if you are doing it for any other reason then your own desire think twice. It's hard to loose a dance name once you've adopted it.

I think it's very pretty - and appropriate since it is an origin of your given name. Best of luck. (Beautiful picture!!!)

alter ego
if you are always yourself on stage, then you should stay with suzanne

if you ever dance outside of yourself or in a way that is contrary to what people think of when they think of you, then go with Shushanna

I love having a dance name. I got a vanity plate for my car, I have the letters in my crocs.
My name means Godfather...always the godfather never the father. it fits me in the traditional form of being a godfather, not in the mafia form! oddly, my first, last, and dance names all have five letters!

I love the new name!
If you wish to change your name, I say go for it. Being that you know the origins of the name all the better. My gripe has always been some of these dancers choose names that they don't have the slightest clue as to what it means or where it came from. Whichever you choose you're still the same beautiful person to me. :-)

Go for it!
I think Shushanna is a beautiful dance name!!

1) Being a variation of your real name may help you feel more connected to the name, and using a name that is not your legal name.

2) You have great reasons for choosing to use a dance name.

3) On the practical side its is not too hard to spell or pronounce (I have done a lot of dance event announcing and pronunciation is something people should really consider!)

I think go for it!

I'm back and forth on the idea for myself as well. The one big reason I have thought of it was for general personal privacy in case weidos see me at events, and then for professional privacy as well, as you noted below for the lawer and yourself.

...that which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet !
Therefore Suzanne would, be she not Suzanne called, retain that dear perfection...but we digress... I like both names & wish you joy in both and either. As for me, when choosing my SCA name, I found "Cattiva" in the Italian dictionary...I just love it! (BTW, it means "naughty" in Italian...so even though I'm relatively "nice" in the USA, one day I'm gonna make it over to Italy...then y'all better watch out! :) Anyway, my point (and I do have one!) is to go to the dictionary and find a word in Turkish (or any language of your choice) that means "fun, fearless, artistic, kind, clever, loyal,as beautiful on the inside as on the outside, sweet, generous and possessing dangerous curves..." and THAT should be your dance name! Cause let's face it- it's what everybody calls you behind your back! xoxoxoxox
