Please join Coro Allegro for our Winter concert on Sunday, March 1st, 2009 at 3:00 PM at the Church of the Covenant,67 Newbury Street, Boston.
For its winter 2009 concert, Coro Allegro Boston's acclaimed chorus for members and friends of the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender communities will feature the Scottish composer James MacMillan's Cantos Sagrados, a dramatic and compelling work that couples poems about political repression in Latin America by Ariel Dorfman and
Ana Maria Mendoza with traditional religious texts. Also on the March 1st program are The Hymn of Jesus, Op. 37 by Gustav Holst; Missa Brevis in D, Op. 63 by Benjamin Britten; and The Lamentations of Jeremiah by Thomas Tallis. Michael Kleinschmidt, Director of Music at Trinity Church, is the featured guest organist.
Cantos Sagrados, by James MacMillan, is a provocative choral drama in three movements that portrays the anguish surrounding the disappearance of political prisoners during Augusto Pinochet's brutal dictatorship of Chile. MacMillan uses two of Ariel Dorfman's vividly descriptive poems as structural pillars for the libretto, which surround a simple, imploring prayer by Ana Maria Mendoza. MacMillan then masterfully weaves sacred Latin texts into the piece to create a work that is timeless and contemporary.
Celebrating 18 years of excellence, Coro Allegro was founded in 1990 and gave its debut concert in May 1991. The organization is dedicated to building social and musical bridges through high-quality performances of significant choral works. Composed of 60 men and women, Coro Allegro is regarded as one of the finest choruses in Boston. In
a city rich in choral groups, Coro Allegro, led by Artistic Director David Hodgkins, stands out for its ability to sing a cappella and accompanied choral works equally well, its commitment to contemporary and lesser-known composers and its consistent musical growth.
