Thu, July 17, 2008 - 8:11 PMDo they bubble? How hot ARE they? How come they only seem to be in deserts, where (to me, at least) the last thing needed is hot water?

Orr is wonderful, and in a wooded setting (although got within 30 ft of burning 2 weeks ago - our reservation got canceled because they were evacuated)... Wilbur is also good.. there are also tons of hot springs in Oregon and Washington that you can hike in to. The water has tons of minerals and feels silky. Totally relaxing, I highly recommend it.
Some of them bubble and can reach up to 145 degrees, but of course usually the soak tubs are after a section for cooling.. It's of course due to thermal energy being released into deep groundwater....... Ah shit, read this for crissakes: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hot_spring |

I might add that usually the temperature ranges from 95-105 degrees in most public springs and are controlled in a way that the source is far enough away that if they did bubble you wouldn't even notice.

Benton Hot Springs
thats all i got to say. it is a bit far but it is worth it. it's Camping with each site having it's own private hot pool to use. And the hiking over the huge boulders that lie behind the campgrounds, is pretty awesome as well. I've only been once for a small music gathering. It was a pretty sick having the whole place rented out though.

They range from kinda warm to boiling – there are many that will kill you in (horrible) seconds if you fall in, including several near the playa. And as pointed out, they're not always in deserts at all. Any volcanically active area will have them, which is why they're all over the west coast. |

yeah. whut de said.
Definitely really cool, er...warm/hot/whateveah. The Black Rock desert hosts many hot spring areas. The two most popular that are available to off season visitors are Trego and Frog Pond/Bordello. Frog Pond is really kickin. And was actually beautified by the Bman folks themselves. Here be some photos from a Burningtoastman Frog Pond adventure. Trego sucks. It's really just a ditch with some really gnarly water. It has a very high sulfur content and you stink like an eggfhart if you actually go in. I've even been out to DoubleHot Hot Springs right at the base of "the Black Rock". That is one of those that will kill you if the timing and your entry location is correct. Ever so often a cow wander into it and instant beef stew. |
