a while back, the two of us put together a symbol library for use with illustrator. I used a couple of those symbols to generate the brushes I used in this sketch

Raven's Nest

MontanaRaven posted a photo:

You do not have to be good

Wild Geese

You do not have to be good.

You do not have to walk on your knees

for a hundred miles through the desert, repenting.

You only have to let the soft animal of your body

love what it loves.

Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine.

Meanwhile the world goes on.

Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain

are moving across the landscapes,

over the prairies and the deep trees,

the mountains and the rivers.

Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air,

are heading home again.

Whoever you are, no matter how lonely,

the world offers itself to your imagination,

calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting--

over and over announcing your place

in the family of things.

Wild Geese © Mary Oliver, poet extraordinaire. Her most recent published collection of poems, Our World is a collaboration between Mary and her late partner, Molly Malone Cook, who made the photographs accompanying Oliver's poems. Molly died in 2005.

Another exquisite book of Oliver's poems, Thirst chronicles her experience with grief and spiritual growth after Molly's death. I read these poems often -- her sense of faith and connection have helped me personally through times of great sorrow.

Thank you to Liz (Blazing Star on Flickr) for allowing me to use two of her amazing photos of geese in Alberta, in this digital composite.

excellent on black enlarged -- worth clicking on the larger version.

Gabe -- I really like the line quality you have going in this one. The heavy power lines and accent lines on the foreground buildings juxtaposed on the lighter faded lines in the background and the smog ... or fog or whatever ... these give your sketch alot of depth. I also like the style you're developing in the last few months, where even inanimate objects like buildings and smokestacks, security cameras and freeways have animation, movement, dynamic change. Sweet!

I posted the video to youtube in two parts. Its a one hour drawing condensed to 12 minutes, done with a Wacom tablet and Photoshop, and recorded with Snapz. I haven't fixed the distortion yet, its because the ratio of my canvas didn't fit the ratio of the imovie project. Say, anybody know a good application that lets me speed up .mov files? Quicktime doesn't seem to do it for me.

I've been waiting for this to happen for a while now, and finally, there is a website that will give you google maps directions for a bicycle.
VIsit tripplanner.bycycle.org/, a website that uses Portland's Metro Transit database of bicycle routes in combination with google maps to provide you with complete trip plans for a bicycle. I've tried a few of my already established routes that I take, and this thing is pretty dead-on, giving me routes that are nearly identical to the ones I ... read more
