Life: On Air
I Don't Like Mondays!
Mon, May 14, 2007 - 3:42 PMI was out of my house in plenty of time to drop the car off and still make it to work. There was barely a lineup to get into the Honda service station, so I anticipated a leisurely stroll to the coffee shop to get my breakfast and walk to work instead of running myself ragged in the mornings like I usually do. I stood by the guy at the service desk making sure they would change the oil and check the breaks. All said and done, I took my receipt and said I’d be available to pick the car up on my lunch hour.
I entered the school building and had enough time to schmooze with my co-workers and even write a progress report for one of my kidlets before the day officially started. My student teacher arrived with the first bell (I had forgotten she would be popping by today) and I hurried off to gather my first group of the day.
About an hour later my cell phone rang and on the other end of the connection was Vinny, the service station dude.
“Uh…ok, I have some things to discuss with you…”
And there started a long list of all the things wrong with my car that would have to be fixed in order to pass inspection. The left and right axels were cracked, the front breaks were worn down to the nub, the battery was shot, fluids in the car were cruddy…on and on he went, as my pulse quickened to an unhealthy pace while the blood drained from my face. The way he was talking, it’s a wonder the car didn’t blow up on my way to the place!
He told me the total…I had to shake my head to clear the wax that must have been clogging my ears preventing me from hearing correctly. He repeated the figure…
“That’s more than the damn car is worth!” I argued. But I realized all my fussing was futile. I needed my car to pass inspection and in working condition.
My 1996 Honda Civic with only 51,000 miles on it needed emergency surgery and a few transplants. How this all happened in one year since last inspection is beyond me. But I can tell you this; the hefty sum I’ll be putting on my credit card tomorrow at pick up is more than I’m paying for my trip to St. Martin in July…airfare included.
Mondays suck.

Trust? Well, it is the service center for the make of my car. I'm sure it's a bit more expensive than Joe Schmo's service shop...but with all that needs to be done, I feel safer here.

car
Steph, I drive honda, not a civic, it's the large 4wd version and is still only just done under 20k miles I decided to take it in early for the 20k service as I wanted to get that expense out of the way before we went away. The cost was around the $450US mark which just about made my jaw drop, but then I checked and found most makes are around that price for a major service, it is one way motor companies get back the price it costs them to run their warranty tickets.Next major service my car will go to an independant service center, I checked their prices and they run about 2/3 the cost and the work is still covered by the Honda warranty. I also hate to say this but if one of your male friends had taken it in , would the ticket be the same?

I own 3 Honda's. 2 Civics and a CRV.
I would have someone give it a second look first. Just my opinion. Bruce |

The same thing happened to me.....except I have a 2004 Nissan Frontier with 66k......and I bought it new.....this last inspection was almost 4k....crazy how much it costs these days....I wish I lived someplace where a car wasn't needed.....Hopefully Tuesday will be better!

Yea, I thought about the male-female thing as well, but changing break pads and replacing axels cost the same whether you have XX or XY chromosomes drifting through your DNA. I bought my car new as well...and as my good freiend said to me today: "You've had the car for 11 years with no major problems or needed repairs...something had to happen eventually." Yup, guess she has a point...

I'd say he is probably ripping you off in some way but you already know that, at least you'll be certain that the car is now safe.

hmmmmmmmmm
I tell ya this sounds like BS.
Rear axle cracked? Brakes are worn out at 51K? Do you drive like a race car driver? I got 95K on my car and the brakes are only halfway worn on it. From the sounds of it they are taking you for... lemme guess: 1K? Good Luck I hope all goes well! |
