Aloha Funkiteers,
So I had this great review of The Police concert from Monday night but my heart just isn’t in right now. Next week maybe. But I did want to get you the info for this month’s Late Show at The EndUp. It’s The Breakbeat Diva edition this month with Melyss and Samira and the one called ICON from Sister SF, as well as the very intoxicating Michele Bass. (I’ve got a great story about having to spin after one of her devastating sets inside the El Circo dome that I’ll tell y’all at a later date. But it *is* a good one…) Anyways, hit this R.S.V.P. link and you’ll get in for half price!

Move the heart switch the pace look for what seems out of place,

Michele Bass (LABADJ.com, NextAid.org, LA/NYC)
As a DJ, which is one amongst many talents she beholds, Michele Bass spins mainly electro and tech inspired nu skool breaks. She has been involved with the undergound music scene for over ten years as a performer, promoter and supporter of quality productions. In 2004; Michele Bass was initiated as the first female DJ to the well-known Los Angeles Breakbeat Association. Together with LABA, Michele is spearheading the breaks scene in Los Angeles full frontal along with tours up and down the coasts. A future goal that Michele and LABA have is a documentary on the breakbeat culture around the world along with an LABA tour to follow the scene. She also was found playing in 2003 at WMC's "Chillin at the Playboy Mansion" party, as well as being found on some of the best sound systems from 2003-2005 at Burning Man, such as El Circo, Lotus, Sol Sound System, and Space Cowboys (ah-yeah!). http://www.labadj.com/michelebass.htm

DJ ICON (Breakbeat Booty, Sister SF, Temple, myspace.com/djicon)
Without doubt, DJ ICON has become a permanent fixture in the U.S. dance music industry. With a career spanning more than a decade, she has captivated audiences the world over with her energetic performances, magnetic stage presence, and massive dancefloor-moving blend of Nu-School Breaks, Tech Funk and Electro House; and has become recognized as one of the leading ladies of Breakbeat.Starting in 1996, ICON diligently rose through the ranks of the San Francisco underground at a time when female DJs and promoters were few. In just a few years, her skills had already landed her numerous residencies in San Francisco and bookings throughout the United States and far beyond. In the time since, ICON has also gained success in radio and television in addition to rocking dancefloors worldwide. She is ranked in Shejay's "Top 100 Female DJs" and was recently voted as one of San Francisco's top ten DJs in the 2008 Nitevibe "Top 10 DJ Dreamteam" Poll.
Over the last decade, ICON has performed in countless cities throughout North America and Europe and has held residencies at world famous clubs such as Limelight in New York City as well as San Francisco's 1015 Folsom, The End-Up and Temple. She has shared the stage with major dance music players such as The Chemical Brothers, Crystal Method, Paul Oakenfold, Sandra Collins, Adam Freeland, Deekline, Elite Force, Dylan Rhymes, Uberzone, General Midi, DJ Icey, Baby Anne and many more.

Melyss (Opulent Temple/Sister SF) and Samira (Seismic, Sister SF)- Sister SF has been pushing the envelope of electronic music in San Francisco for almost 10 years. These girls can seriously rock the decks with their brand of breaks and electro. SISTER is a place for female DJs to get gigs without bias, providing a supportive, friendly platform for any female DJ, MC or live performer to enjoy their music where gender is not an issue... a place where women are neither fighting to be heard nor imported merely to fulfill a gimmick quotient. We're not raging feminists - we just think it's better to be viewed as a DJ first, and then as a woman, when you're behind the decks!

Smoove (Funketronic, Newsbreakz) Smoove needs no introduction. He just rips it and we all know it.

Nathan Barato (Toronto) - http://www.myspace.com/roachesneverdie. Truly a music man, his no genre left unturned attitude, keeps him versatile and adept as an electronic music artist. To add credo to his storied beginnings, Nathan also found time to work in the local record hot spot, Traxx; as well as become head music buyer for global music peddlers Fully Loaded Distribution. Although a product of the garage/house music scene, Nathans encompassing music style eclipses any definition.Having graced the decks at almost every reputable club in the city, Baratos residencies now include The Gallery (Guvernment), Comfort Zone, Footwork and This Is London. His seamless ability to create a story through music has seen his inclusion in numerous electronic showcases like The Guvernments annual Labour of Love, and most recently Global Gatherings Sundance Music Festival in Montreal and Darko & Migz events in Malta. Nathan understands the power of the dance floor and to pay attention to its urges and its wants.

Aloha Funkiteers,
Oh geez, I just realized that today is in fact Friday (and not Thursday like I had thought…) and this announce is going out very very late. So, lets forego the usual verbose preamble and get right to it. Plus, last weekend was possibly the weirdest I’ve ever had. Good weird. But *very* weird. Ask me about it later.

…And speaking going in thru the out door, tonight is gonna be action packed so you better take your vitamins. At the top of the night all y’all are gonna “Get Lucky” at the SupperClub with the one called Dylan Rhymes. He’s bringing his brand of Tech Funk all the way from London with the full line up of Opulent Temple DJ’s supporting the bill. Coz, Icon, Dulce Vita, and many many more will all be in attendance for your full flavor funk needs. I’m on in the main room at 2:15am. And then for your underground needs—and I know you have those needs—I’m rocking 58 Tehama for the Neuroweapons party. This one’s gonna be a proper Drum ‘n Bass set so get ready for the dub plate pressure which begins at 4am. You’ll thank me later.

So now I come to you with open arms nothing to hide believe what I say,
Smoove.

Aloha Funkiteers,
OK since I’ve got a lot of info to cover for this weekend’s events and last weeks announce was rather long, I’ll keep it brief this week. So check it, I’m looking for a new cell phone company. I’ve been with Sprint since 2000 and it’s finally time for me to get another provider for my wireless service. So, who would you suggest? Talk to me Funkiteers; I wanna hear you thoughts.

…And speaking of tom foolery, I’ve got quite a busy weekend ahead of me. The season finale of Louche on Friday night, an underground party for the Department Of Spontaneous Combustion on Saturday night, and then the season opener for the legendary 2nd Sunday at Kelly’s Mission Rock. With summer approaching, Loche is gonna take the summer off so this Friday is gonna be the last one for a few months. So to commemorate the past few months of Absinthe fueled debauchery and ribaldry I’m putting together a special all 80’s, all vinyl set just for this night. Stay tuned for the secret password that will get you in for a super discounted price. Then Saturday night, I’m making the journey across the pond to Emeryville to rock the Acme Warehouse with fellow Sister SF DJ’s Samira and Forrest Green and super star DJ Dragn'fly. That’ll be some proper underground warehouse business for sure. And then Sunday it’s the season opener for 2nd Sunday. This is their 10th season of good time Sunday afternoon beats and they’re doing it up proper with all the SF heavy hitters in the mix and plenty of smiles all around. Definately get your tickets ahead of time just to avoid the long lines and save some money at the door. OK I’ve got to go track down my copy of Ebn Ozn.

Aloha Funkiteers,
A few years back I used to have this really sweet Midnight Blue 1985 Honda Elite 150 Deluxe Scooter. It was the same model of scooter that had Lou Reed in the ad campaign and this particular one belonged to a high school friend and had been parked in their garage for well over a decade before it came to live with me up here in SF. Anyways, one unusually sunny December weekend me and a friend were zipping around the city on our scooters and generally enjoying this oddly warm winter afternoon. As we crest Columbus heading into the financial district we spot dozens of drunken Santas blocking traffic out in front of Vesuvio. “Hey there’s Santa Con! Lets go say Hi!” my scooter partner suggests, so we pull over to rub elbows with about a hundred sloshed Santas. Suddenly, out of the crowd lumbers the Reverend Otto Schutt. All eight feet and 600 pounds of Otto—arms flung out stretched—comes bounding at me with the biggest grin on his face and a Santa hat precariously balanced on top of his epic mass of dreads. Before I can even get any sort of welcome or salutation out, POW! I find myself on the receiving end of one of his characteristically enthusiastic greetings. (If you can imagine a combination of those Hawaiian girls who present you with flower leis as you get off the airplane in Honolulu and a freight train, it’s something like that…) His mighty arms wrap around my entire body and he forgets to stop. The force of impact magically lifts me off of my firmly planted feet; it was a classic two point take down. And the three of us--Otto, me, and my scooter--go flying over into traffic. Laughing hysterically the whole way down.

There’s dozens and dozens of stories just like this about Otto Schutt. I’m sure you’ve got many yourself. Ask Laird about what Otto did to his phone that day they were on the house boat. Or sometime get Dae Han to tell you what he did at Burning Man when their neighbor complained about the Boombox being too loud. Seriously, these stories are snort-laugh funny. And now more then ever is a perfect time to tell them. Tell all of them; every story you have. We should tell the story of Otto. And you really should listen to more T. Rex.

…And speaking of giving thanks to Glam Rock, oh boy do I have a busy weekend ahead. The triumphant return of the Bohemian Carnival is on Friday night at the DNA and Mighty Breakz at (where else?) Mighty on Saturday night. I’m super psyched about both of these. The Bohemian Carnival is one of my favorite parties to play just for its freaky non-stop craziness. For this edition they’re bringing the Extra Action Marching Band along with me and Tamo for all your Breakz needs. And then Saturday the one called Rico Tubbs is gonna bring his Finland flavored breakz to Mighty. Ya know all those phat jams I’ve been dropping for past year? Yeah, those are all Rico Tubbs. It’s been a while since I’ve been in the mix for Mighty Breaks so as a way of saying welcome back they’re offering a special guest list. Just send in your full name to info@mighty119.com and you’ll get in for ONLY $5 but you have to get there before 11pm. You can handle that right? This announce has gone on long enough so if you need the full details hit the links at the top.

Aloha Funkiteers,
Today is a glorious day to be alive in the great state of California. Yes, today the sun is shining. Today is Bike To Work day (did you?) And today the forces of Love triumphed over Evil. Today, a horrible wrong was corrected. Today, the wrong-headed ban on same-sex Marriage was over turned by our states Supreme Court. Today, Orange County is burning!

…And speaking of peace love and understanding, this Saturday is one that I have been looking forward to for months. It's the May edition of The Late Show at The EndUp. Patricio and I haven't spun together since Love Fest last year so we're ready to give to ya proper. And we've got a solid three hour set. M3, Laird, and Ben Maybe are also along for the ride this month. And if you stick around after the sun comes up, you'll catch a special set from a secret guest. Think, "Touching you makes me bi-lingual." Yeah, you know who I'm talking about. Make sure you get on the RSVP list and you get in for only $10. OK, I have to go outside and finish tanning the top of my head.

You’re the one who makes me come running you’re the sun who makes me shine,

Aloha Funkiteers,
OK I have a bit of a confession to make. I love power pop. No really I can’t get enough of it. And to make matters worse, there’s been an onslaught of great power pop bands releasing new albums of late. Weezer just dropped some new product as well as Radiohead. On the near horizon Deathcab For Cutie and Coldplay have new discs on the way. In fact, Coldplay is giving away free digital copies of their new track “Violet Hill” on their site; even though it’s a lower quality mp3 its still worth it. And if that wasn’t enough, later this month Portishead is releasing their first record 10 years. Yay!

…And speaking of taking your time for a high quality product, This Friday night is the monthly absinthe tingled Louche at Whisper. This edition of Absinthe Kabaret includes (but not limited to) Mariel A La Mode, Frank Oliver, and The Indra, plus resident evil victrola crankers Miz Margo, Delachaux and myself. Show up with a date and say “Absinthe makes the tart grow fonder” and the two of you will get in for the price of one. That’s right; it’s two for one deal. Think of it as a belated Valentines present. Then, Saturday night has me saying goodbye to the much fabled Xenodrome. Yes, it’s the final victory lap for one of SF’s notorious underground spaces so bring on the “Weapons Of Ass Destruction.” It must be Spring because they’re also doing a special couples pricing. If you show solo its $15 but if you show up with a date its only $25. Check the facebook invite for all the details and full line up. By the way, one of my favorite SF bands The Monophonics are gonna hold down the funk in the big room at the top of the night so you’ll wanna get there early to check them out.

Aloha Funkiteers,
Oh my goodness it’s Wednesday and you know what that means. Yes yes yes, it’s time once again to head down to 111 Minna for your weekly session of Qool. (I’d put the umlaut over the second “O” but my version of Microsoft Word won’t do it. Figures…) They’ve finally installed a new Butt-Rocking sound system with all butt-rocking frequencies dialed in for maximum butt-rockage. You can guarantee I’ll be putting the new beast thru its paces, promptly at 7:30. And if you haven’t already done so, give my interview on the Qool website a read.
Seriously Geeky Single Speed Question

For about a year or so I've been riding around a Bianchi M.U.S.S. single speed. And it's fucking great. The perfect ride for my daily commute. No gears to crunch just the pure gliding sensation of a rock solid machine underneath me. And a pair of burley Disc brakes bring it all to a quick stop.

So, if it's the perfect bicycle what possibly could I want to change?

I was thinking it might be pretty sweet to plush out the front end--and lighten up the overall ride as well--with a carbon fork. I've done the steel main frame/carbon fork combo before and I really like that feel. So I was thinking it would be a good idea for this ride. From what I gather there's about 5 different forks to choose from that meet the parameters, and weights all about the same. the price varies from $150 at the low end up to about $325 at the high end. My questions are these; is there really that much difference in ride quality and construction from one brand to the next? Is there one fork that is clearly superior?

Also, my axle to crown distance measures 42.5cm. Most of the forks I found are 44.5cm. Is that 2cm difference gonna fuck up my frame geometry or will I not even notice the difference?

Please, lemme know what you think.

For reference I've here are the forks I found and their related links.

Hippies Kidnapped My Vacuum

OK so, a few years back when me and my beautiful Astilla moved into our new apartment we bought a brand new vacuum as our first joint purchase. In reality we took our busted, hand-me-down, glorified dust buster vacuum down to the Hoover store near our place to get it repaired and ended up buying a brand new Hoover WindTunnel upright. And really its pretty fucking cool. It's super powerful (Chrome. Trailer hitch. Suck. You get the idea...) and came with all these cool cobweb, corner, and upholstery attachments.

Now, I dunno what it is about new vacuums but when you get one, EVERYONE wants to borrow it. Including the Hippies who live downstairs from us.

And about those Hippies...
They are classic Hippies. Corduroy wearing. Dave Grisman listening. Nag Chompa burning. Trust funding. Bong hitting. Hippies! She's a nanny and he's a photo assistant - which another way of saying "unemployed." They're always talking about how broke they are but always seem to be getting new stuff all the time. Except for a new vacuum. You know, *those* kind of Hippies...

Anyway, She's one of those Hippies who will take every opportunity to try to read my tarot, or rub crystals on me or get me to drink some combination of flower essences. She likes to get together with her other Hippie friends to cast spells and align their chakras with their auras. She doesn't even take aspirin for headaches. She's got some root herb from the Andes Mountains that the ancient Mayans used to use. (Did I mention the Mayan Calendar ends in 2012?)

She's also got what she like to call an "Anxiety Disorder" for which she munches handfuls of Xanax, Adavan, and Diazapam on an hourly basis. Now I dunno about you, but if I could get my hands on open-ended prescriptions for Xanax, Adavan, and Diazapam just by faking an anxiety disorder as well, you'd be damn skippy I'd be in the doctors office tomorrow morning. Just going to work everyday causes feelings of extreme dread and foreboding to well up inside me. Performing in front of 100's people every weekend makes me want to cloister myself away in my apartment, never to re-emerge! And the only thing that could get me thru my day is Xanax and Valium. Just imagine how she feels having to work with someone else children? Ye gods, she NEEDS all those sedatives!

Does anyone else find it ironic that with all her tinctures and essences and salves and healing crystals and ointments and other homeopathic treatments for every other ailment under the sun, she must take Diazapam to alleviate her anxiety?

Another panacea for her anxiety is to clean her apartment. I guess she vacuums her apartment every other day. With my vacuum. Vacuuming her oriental rugs with my vacuum brings her a sense of calm that can only be found with profound sedatives.

They've had my vacuum for about three months now. And my place really needs a good thorough vacuuming. I've casually asked for it back a few times in the hall but hadn't really followed thru with recovering it. Every time I had brought up needing it there was always some reason as to why they had to use the vacuum before it got returned. So last week I went down stairs (bong in hand...) snapped a few tubes with them and when I went to leave said "hey I really gotta vacuum my place, can I take *my* vacuum upstairs with me?" Just the fact that I had to *ask* to take my vacuum back up to my apartment galled me to no end. But their hippies so you don't want to harsh their mellow. Especially when they have anxiety disorders.

My perfunctory request was met with a stiff silence that could only be described as "frosty." I could see her trying grapple with the idea of being apart from my vacuum. She was leaping out of her skin knowing her Valium stash was just down the hall. "um ok. but, um..." sweat was beginning to bead up on her lip. "yeah yeah, cool. No problem..." she was more trying to convince herself that she could separated from my vacuum rather then she was agreeing to my request. "But we have people coming over for dinner tomorrow night, she I'll need to vacuum the whole place before they come so can I come up and get it in an hour?"

I left with out my vacuum that night.

Last night, I'd had enough. I was going to recover my vacuum come hell or high water. Even if I had to launch a covert, special forces mission with a team of navy seals,my vacuum was going to be returned to my domicile. I called downstairs. "Listen, I gotta get my vacuum. My apartment desperately needs a cleaning." They pleaded for more time. They hadn't vacuumed since their dinner the other night. I gave them 15 minutes. I went down 20 minutes later. Even though she had just run the vacuum, she made one more pass over their huge oriental carpet. As a final goodbye, she gently opened the dust canister, lovingly removed the filter, and with the grace of a ballet dancer tapped the canister and filter into the garage chute as a final goodbye.

Last night, my vacuum returned to my apartment. Where it belongs.

This morning I e-mailed them a link to Hoover Vacuums website. To deny her the joys of vacuuming is like denying a fat kid their cake!

Just say "Baudelaire Is My Hero" to the doorperson and you’ll get in for ONLY $5 if you show up before 11pm and it’s just $10 after 11pm. Easy, right?

Aloha Funkiteers,
The other day I was hanging out with some friends, trading stories about some of the wacky things that have happened to us in this bizarre DJ life and I was reminded of one story in particular which I think ranks up there very highly. And like many good stories it begins with the phrase, “So there was this one night at the Gingerbread Warehouse…” I wish I could remember exactly which party, I think it was one of the “In Funk We Trust” parties Laird used to do (before he became obsessed with Ass Destruction,) but it also could have been an Infuse party too. Anyway, this is a minor detail. What is important were the dozen or so members of a very influential music and fashion Burning Man sound camp. For the purposes of this tale I’ll just call them *that* camp. Now on this particular night, these dozen members of *that* camp where completely outta their gourds on some high grade blotter acid. About half way thru my set one of *that* camp’s resident DJ’s climbed up the side of the speaker stack and had to be coaxed back down. But this DJ was adamant about climbing atop the speaker stack. So up he went again, only this time he maneuvered himself onto the video projector perch and began to use it as a trapeze. Now, at about the same time as the security and sound techs were frantically trying to get *that* camp’s DJ off the projector perch, another member of *that* camp--whom was dancing right in front of the booth--wanted to get a better look at the spinning record label but since it was spinning around and around reading it was kinda difficult. She had a head full of acid after all. So she reached out and stopped the platter as it was rotating, bringing a sudden and warbling halt to the shiny disc of vinyl as it was playing to the entire warehouse. Total silence. The acid enthusiast kinda looks up and is only vaguely aware that the music had stopped, yet never realizing it was by her own hand. As I’m trying to figure out what the fuck happened to my track, I hear a lone voice cry out “NOOO!” and turn to see my friend (we’ll call her “Cheeks”) running across the dance floor and executes one of the most perfect two point take-downs I have ever seen. She grabs the acid enthusiast, and as quickly as she can, pulls her as far away from the decks as she can go. Out into the front lobby. The vinyl, now released from acid enthusiast’s grip, winds back up to full speed. Party back on!

…And speaking of significantly profound tripping, this Friday night sees me returning to Louche, the Absinthe party at Whisper. Get there early and check out the enticing burlesque stylings of Leila Bazzani, Delilah and Vima Burlesque while Ms. Margo, Delachaux, Fac.50 and the one they call Smoove take care of the swanky sounds for your Absinthe imbibing pleasure. And for all you Absinthe Curious types hit me back at the e-mail address at the top of this to get on the RSVP list. That way you’ll get in for only $5 before 11p and just $10 after. It’s just that easy. I’m also playing in an airplane hangar up in Reno on Saturday night but I’m not really supposed to talk about it cuz it’s an invite-only event.

My head is full of magic baby and I can share this with you,
