Norman and I are now based at the Life in Africa HQ in Gulu, and have had a busy schedule, touring around with Francis and George. We'll be here for a week. Gulu today is much different than what we saw in Invisible Children. The streets are filled with people night and day going about their lives. Still there are many issues to address and some people are still living in the displaced persons camps, like one we saw today. The war went on for 20 years, so many don't know where home is anymore...

Bunabumali Village is one of the most unique communities I have ever experienced. Houses are peppered on steep slopes connected by foot paths. There are no power lines and no cars. Mount Elgon high above catches clouds and rain comes and goes--- down-pouring, then sunny minutes later. Banana trees and coffee bushes grow everywhere... as do children.

LifeInAfrica.com bunabumali.my-php.net First, I'll buy sewing machines, fabric, and rope, then bus to Norman's village at the base of Mt. Elgon, which is spectacular: www.kws.org/mt-elgon.html Once the kids have a grip on sewing hammocks, we'll get to work building the bambo... read more
Stitch Uganda Together is an Action Hero Network mission to create a cultural exchange between students at Forest Hills School in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada and youth in Uganda, Africa. It involves donating sewing machines, providing free hammocks to homeless children, and sharing the process online through web cam and digital video as a demonstration of grassroots activism.

Preparing offerings for my first tribal workshops at school tomorrow, I read a short book this afternoon that someone gave me years ago, in the form of a dozen photocopied pages stapled together. I had never read it before, but for some reason it has been on my mind and I felt the need to read it today. Sure enough, it was the perfect intro to action hero training-- providing insights on discovering one's totem, developing a persona, keeping a journal, seeing through illusion, and creating re...

about me
When people ask "where do you live?" ...I say, "In the present as much as possible." At age 19, I left home and started exploring North America by sea kayak, and kept a journal (www.solomax.com). After months of living on the beach with travelers in Mazatlan, Mexico, and then living in Austin Texas, I continued my journey by kayak on the ocean, paddling southward to Roblito, a village of 250 people who live simply, close to nature in tight community. I was SoloMAX... who was all about going solo to get the MAX out of life. This experience in Roblito opened my eyes to the collective power of community and the graceful nature of simplicity. Over the past five years, I've taught personal development through art therapy workshops and slide shows, and been learning about culture by visiting many inspiring communities across the western United States, including Rainbow Gatherings and Burning Man.
When Hurricane Katrina hit, I brought a 60ft geodesic dome to the Gulf Coast to create a community center with a Rainbow Family kitchen. That project finished at the end of Spring. I'm currently home in Mazatlan, Mexico. Over the winter, the social-profit I founded, The ACTION HERO NETWORK (www.actionheronetwork.net), organized a grassroots movement in Central Mexico to create a cultural exchange community center near Roblito, Nayarit (tribes.tribe.net/roblito). We are also developing a sailing collective on a 45ft schooner (tribes.tribe.net/tribalspaceship). To fund the grassroots work, I am creating an eco-tourism busy-ness in Sinaloa and Nayarit, Mexico: www.vivesinaloa.com/kiosko_t...uipal.htm Life as I see it is recorded in a rainbow of color at actionhero.smugmug.com
