Damien Hirst Picks Up A Castle.
Tue, December 27, 2005 - 3:22 PMHirst's macabre aesthetic sensibility suits Toddington Manor, his new Gloucestershire residence. Built in the 19th-century gothic revival fashion, this 300-room mansion rests on a 124-acre estate and is believed to have inspired the Houses of Parliament in London. He plans to use his new digs as home base for his family -- he's married to Maia Norman, with whom he shares three sons -- as well as an art museum for his own and other artists' works.
At a mere $5.4 million, this purchase was practically a steal. But it's no ordinary fixer-upper: vacant for 20 years, both the home and grounds have suffered from neglect and disrepair. According to the artist's spokesman, Hirst sees this property as a lifelong restoration project. It will certainly keep him busy; experts estimate $18 million in initial repairs, which will be conducted with the English Heritage.

Maybe Hirst plans to sell the castle off by the slice.
Seriously, it's going to take the sale of quite a number of Hirst "spin art" and rides on the Hirst museum boat to pay for the repairs. I bet he gets a British or American television network to help sponsor the work-- a "This Old Castle" or "Extreme Castle Makeover" perhaps? |

Extreme Chambermaid Buggery" more like it.
But hey, what do you buy the man who has a 300 room castle for his birthday? I don't know either. |

So outré.
By the slice... love it. From what I hear, people are curious to see what will happen with the estate, especially the locals. They rallied against its conversion into a luxury hotel, but I'm not sure how they feel about Hirst moving in either!
Chambermaid buggery? Now that would be a new subject for him to explore in his pickling formaldehyde experiments ;) I haveta admit, that Great Tower is pretty spectacular. For the moment, you can rent small cottages and renovated carriage houses around the manor. I can actually see Tim Burton in this space more than Hirst, but who knows? At least he'll have the space for those large-scale installations now... |

How many cows does one need to slice to get a 300-room mansion ?

its not much but you could call it home
congrats! for Mr. Hirst, how lovely to have, just a rustic cottage in the country, something to putter around in. Just a fresh coat of paint, and fix the roof it will be fabulous! If I had that kind of pocket change I too would be doing a fixer-upper in the south of France. He's just the coolest...
