this week i began my level i fieldwork in pediatrics for the masters program i'm enrolled in at dominican u.

i put in 28 hours at the clinic, which was a mighty squeeze considering my schedule lately with work and summer school and the show (kelly mccubbin's golden hour of radio--opens aug. 1!)

but the week was inspiring. i got a wonderful reminder of why i chose this path. i also appreciated being able to go barefooted all day--yay, mats!

i love kidz.

text taken from a poster on a wall in my department at SRJC...

Rules for Teachers--1872

1. Teachers each day will fill lamps, trim the wicks and clean chimneys.

2. Each morning teacher will bring a bucket of water and a scuttle of coal for the day's session.

3. Make your pens carefully. You may whittle nibs to the individual taste of the pupils.

4. Men teachers may take one evening each week for courting purposes, or two evenings a week if they attend church regularly.

5. After ten hours in school, the teacher may spend the remaining time reading the Bible or any other good books.

6. Women teachers who marry or engage in unseemly conduct will be dismissed.

7. Every teacher should lay aside from each pay a goodly sum of his earnings for his benefit during his declining years so that he will not become a burden on society.

8. Any teacher who smokes, uses liquor in any form, frequents pool or public halls, or gets shaved in a barber shop will give good reason to suspect his worth, intention, integrity and honesty.

9. The teacher who performs his labor faithfully and without fault for five years will be given an increase of twenty-five cents per week in his pay, providing the Board of Education approves.

how i spent my summer vacation

<a href="http://people.tribe.net/sonomacutey/blog/9445b04b-cfaa-472d-b2bb-24524ac9e895">  						          <img class=" picThumb" src="http://images.tribe.net/tribe/upload/photo/da4/573/da457385-2b63-4815-b519-e40df3a60a55.thumb" width="65" height="58" alt="" />
    </a>
										<div>
my summer vacation was tuesday, may 13--the day after my last exams and the day before the first meeting of one of my summer school courses.

it was splendid.

i slept in all the way until 7:30 (omg), took a long shower, made strong coffee, and fritzed around on the internet until it was time to leave for the museum.

the museum was wonderful, as usual. the exhibit really grabbed me. as an aside, did you know that annie leibovitz had all three of her daughters when she was in her fifties? i did not know that and for some reason it's sticking with me, challenging an assumption, i think.

the weather was simply gorgeous today. i was grateful to be out in the world and not locked up in a lecture hall.

i saw friends, got a game of scrabble in, listened to music, wiped off some dross from my laptop--and immediately filled the space again.

i jettisoned a bunch of old episodes of Weeds and House and grabbed some Tudors and Deadwood. w00t! i have missed so much pop culture, in the last couple of years especially, that i decided to start catching up. you know--some of this stuff really sucks you in. i'm dazzled by Dexter. sheesh, i wasn't expecting that. i didn't even really like the first episode that i saw. that was true of Deadwood, too. hmmm...

today i even picked up a book for pleasure reading. i put it right back down again, but the thought was very nice.

so yeah, tonight i set my alarm for school in the morning. tomorrow night i will have homework.

but today was glorious.

xx

anyone got an old monopoly game gathering dust? missing pieces? your kids spent all the money at the corner store?

i'd love to take it off of your hands and make it into an occupational therapy lab exercise, specifically for children with deficits in visual perception.

my lab project is due in a couple of weeks. if you have an old monopoly game you'd like to donate to my cause, please drop me a line and i will zoom by next week and pick it up.

this was surprising to me: there are not many monopoly sets in second-hand stores. and the new ones are kinda spendy. um...wha' happend? ;o)

    </a>
										<div>i filed on february 1.

today i finally went online to check the status of my return, because i usually have the damn thing spent by this time of year--and there it was, suspended in a "not filed" category.

taxes...not filed...someone pinch me...

so yeah--stunned, i dragged out everything i had printed out five weeks ago. i stared at the parts that said "submitted" and "payment accepted," et cetera.

jesus. sufferin'. christ.

yeah, but what are ya gonna do? i logged in and went back and did it all over again.

this time for sure. printy, printy.

meanwhile, holy fuck--no money. okay well, i hope that everything i've been stalling on until this relief pitch comes stays off of me for a little while longer--my poor car especially. i think its demise may be imminent without repair work tout de suite.

but how lucky can i expect to get, anyways?

i got my white knuckles crossed!

<a href="http://people.tribe.net/sonomacutey/blog/972b693b-5ce2-47cf-b9bd-828fed62fc11">  						          <img class=" picThumb" src="http://images.tribe.net/tribe/upload/photo/235/8a7/2358a7ea-cd2c-46ce-9dc7-248b1f7447a8.thumb" width="65" height="65" alt="" />
    </a>
										<div>the relentless desire to consume fine chocolate--friend or foe?

so often pre-menstrualness is used by women as carte blanche for some type of self-gratifying behavior--and i'm no exception. this particular cycle has been my ticket to ride the chocolate supahighway.

and i have eaten so much chocolate in the last few days that it's almost embarrassing. almost, i say as i wipe my lips.

it all kicked off with the bacon chocolate that my friend don turned me on to a couple of weeks ago. i could NOT stop thinking about how disturbingly delicious it is.

but then this week especially i gave myself free fucking rein and have eaten everything from organic triple chocolate brownies to lindt dark intense mint chocolate to crapola milky way dark bars. i even nibbled on a wedge of Ibarra mexican chocolate.

but the coup, for i am not to be outdone by my own self, was this morning when i polished off an entire--get this--chocolate and cornflakes bar! i had never seen one before and it was really good--sort of reminiscent of a nestle crunch bar, but different and better.

oh god.

now as i raise my chocolate-smeared head again and turn my chocolate-bleared eyes back to the world, one thing comes to mind:

damn you, ritter sport, damn you straight to hell!

mmm.

<a href="http://people.tribe.net/sonomacutey/blog/cc0c46a1-00dc-4b77-9bce-938d71e235d9">  						          <img class=" picThumb" src="http://images.tribe.net/tribe/upload/photo/388/615/3886159b-3b51-46ff-96aa-bd6d83bf553e.thumb" width="65" height="68" alt="" />
    </a>
										<div>most people look at me funny when i say that. i get similar glances with "salary," "medical benefits," and "paid sick leave and vacation time."

okay, so let's review:

paid holidays (courtesy of the school system and its nationalistic bias) starting with TODAY:

(remember, this means that my office chair is empty but my ass is paid like it's sitting there--and this is not part of my vacation time.)

1.  Lincoln's Birthday
2.  Washington's Birthday
3.  Memorial Day
4.  Fourth of July
5.  Labor Day
6.  Veterans Day
7.  Thanksgiving Day
8.  Day after Thanksgiving
9.  Christmas Eve
10. Christmas Day
11. New Year's Eve
12. New Year's Day
13. Martin Luther King Day
14. and my fave....Flag Day (Admissions Day) this is the quintessential "floating holiday," which my college, by consensual agreement, "places" during the week between xmas and the new year, so that we can have five consecutive paid days off during the holidays.

so that's two solid weeks of paid time off, in addition to my three paid vacation weeks and my three paid sick leave weeks--that's two months, kids. being salaried with benefits means that, barring things like longevity and COLA raises, my paycheck is for the same amount every month--no matter what went on that month. plus, i'm union.

peeps, i recommend it.

    </a>
										<div>ahhh.

i went shopping last night for the first time in months.

in the store i figured i knew my size, finally, and so i grabbed a bunch of stuff out of the appropriate section, not examining tags. i tried on two pairs of slacks that made my ass look really good, and then noticed that they were a size SMALLER than the section they had been in. they had been misfiled, dontcha know.

w00t!

i'm just gobsmacked at how good it feels to have clothing that actually fits me--it is amazing what 3 new pairs of pants, 2 new skirts and 5 or 6 new tops can do.

oh doodz, i hit the 100 pound mark. i have officially lost a seventh-grader.

now if i could bench-press a seventh-grader, y'all would be in some serious hot-mama trouble.

so, um, wait for it...

luv to the peeps!
