Girl, 10, says husband raped, abused her married and divorced AT 10 DAMMIT HOW DOES THIS HAPPEN
Wed, July 16, 2008 - 8:48 AMIs this the worst place on earth to be a woman?
In Yemen, women belong to men. Most are illiterate. They are arrested in the street. They die in childbirth.

Thanks for posting this Dave. It's painful to even know about, but heartening to know someone so small can be so brave in the face of her own society and culture. I hope her generation will aid the rest of the world in change with such acts of definance.

I am often amazed and always disgusted by the sub-human treatment women are forced to endure within some cultures. I have read much in regards to this subject and I find that the men who are guilty of this kind of treatment refuse to be responsible for their own lack of self control...ie blaming the woman for her own rape etc. because the music of her voice, the shine of her hair, the lightness of her step, etc. was too tempting. This child is an example of the inner strength these women posess. My heart goes out to her and the others in the world.

It's unjust that things like this can happen, but yes how strong she is to speak up about it in the face of darkness. Unfortunately, it's not just the men in this society, but sometimes the women too who encourage this. I say this only because I have read and heard of the moms pressuring the girls (more than their fathers) for these unions. How can we be so unkind to our own gender, our own blood is beyond me and my understanding. It's almost as if they have been locked into this pattern and their kin must suffer as they have.

She does look like an angel. I could not imagine sealing this kind of fate for my daughters. How sad to think that there are places in the world, and even here, where girls and women are not respected.

Sending Healing...
to all daughters, and sons, everywhere. Forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us...What an amazing trespass against a little girl! Breathe deep and send healing, to her, to all, and to yourself. Blessings.

god help this little angel
shit like this makes me sick. what makes me sicker is that women are the ones throughout the centuries who have been the prime supporters for extreme forms of patriarchy like this. makes me ashamed to be female. Sending lots of love to this poor child!
