Spiraling
A show by the seaside, the 5th of December
Fri, December 7, 2007 - 7:01 PMIt was my 37th show
It started with an idea. Let's share the vision of the hoop with Tori. She spent a tour meeting with indiginous people, and even wrote an album that told the story of their displacement. Maybe she'll lend an ear. Some of her music is sounding desperate, like there's no hope. I want to share a vision of the future that leaves something for the future. I hope that this work helps her story to include that vision.
So we created a portfolio, which included pics of grandma in her buckskins, gma in front of her wagon train, and grandma and i planting seeds. Also was a letter from me, telling her of the hoop walk, the work we're doing, and contact information. I gave her my medicine bag, the one with the turtle swimming between the sun and the Moon, Within were breadroots (from s. washington), blackberries (from Wolf Creek), Pine Nuts (from Central Nevada), and seeds from the various hoops. Therein the box was also a Juniper/Sage stick from Pinion Camp. The pics & packaging courtesy of Adrain.
Arrived at the Meet & Green near 11am. Waiting in my clown drag with Buckskins, and a little whiteface of course. 5 hours later it was time.
Tori came out. I stood nervously holding the package. She came near. Is this your only show? she asked. Yes, i said, hugging her. Tori, I told her. We are rewilding the sacred hoop for the future generations. I opened the box, shared with her the medicine bag and its contents. She told me that afternoon she went with several indiginous women and they did a sacred smudgeing ceremony. She asked if I wanted anything signed. Sure, i replied. Will you sign my parasol, it matches your hair. She asked who to sign it too. I said "spiral, and then a heart." She had me draw my symbol on her hand, and then copied onto the parasol. She promised to read the story in the folder. Later that night, her security guard came up to me and gave me two front row tickets, and said the other one was for Carmen, my long time tour traveling friend.
The songs were seattle rockstar material, except for two. Subtly, she shared her indiginous connection, even in the heart of seattle, with "Virginia" and "Rattlesnakes".
She also played heart of gold, seaside, smells like teen spirit, and I'm a Believer
It was truly amazing and powerful. Thank you tori.
Two days later I'm still coming back.

You totally deserve that! She totally deserved that present! Front RoW! And it sounds like that show was very energetic and powerful as comparred to the PDX show which was difficult for the band (seeing as they were detoured and crazed due to weather) oh Spiral thats so awesome! |
