INTERPOLATOR
I have an interest in the space in between things. Interstices. Metaphorically, there are many expressions of concepts, matter, productions which inhabit or perform in these spaces.
As an example. In Digital media, pixels have values such as cartesian(algebraic) denmination and color values. There are formulas(algorithms) turned into graphic functions which produce or determine new values for the possible pixels that can exist (or be created) in between any given two pixels, called 'interpolators'.
This is of interest to me because cultures tend to define themselves through ideologigal binarisms (good/bad, this/that, black/white), but reality, in fact, as we all kno is rife with gray areas (inter-racial mariage, gay/bi/straight, left-to-center, etc.). So in a way, an interpolator produces 'in-betweens' and hybridizations, out of observing the combinant potential of the extremes.
SPLACE = Platzgeist
Platzgeist = SPLACE (ambiguity between 'place' and 'space' –which I detect in the specific use of the word 'platz') and 'geist' the 'sense' of something (spirit, soul, ghost). So the 'sense of place' in space is 'splace'.
about me
A passion for beauty, simplicity, and improvisation informs my vision for Splace. In my native Mexico, I grew up with a keen appreciation of that culture's mystical and spontaneous elements, it's idiosyncratic adaptability, and historical richness. This, blended with a European sensibility inherited from my German father –a well respected architect, helped me to develop a unique sense of style and an instinctive eye for the visual and conceptual arts.
In North America, I honed my design skills and later channeled them through the study of language structuralism, to produce conceptual art and photography, I became a creative director at consultancies in advertising, interactive media, industrial design, branding, and product development, to later more accurately define myself as an 'inter-notional catalyst' –a blend between free radical thinker and conceptual creator. I always felt torn between the practical world of design consultancy and a passion for conceptual art, typography and the abstract world of philosophy and theory. A different lens through which to view the world. I founded my own organization SPLACE, and am becoming a community instigator in the art and design arena.
So, in true entrepreneurial sense, I have made a commitment—to my own true nature. On this path, I became a self-taught instigator of contemporary art and design, finding that I am drawn to more eclectic, 'non-linear' processes and to collaboration over competition—similar to those I had growing up and have been adopting for my art and photography. I knew that expanding the language of wearable items, by breaking the rules of my host practices, such as jewelry, mod-ified products elevate my soul, tickle my neurons, and promote a sense of individuality, but I have conjectured that by integrating such elements from my art into wearable designs has a similar affect I can share with a wider audience.
I realized that this was what I wanted to do with my life—share this revelatory understanding with others through the transcendental reach of thought-out, hand-crafted mod-ern goods. SPLACE was born. I began to seek out collaborators, notions, and materials that echoed my sensibilities—elements that reflect spontaneity, optimism, open ambivalence, and connectivity—an eclectic mix not commonly found in the American market.
I like to thnk my sensibilities: Austrian humor, German configuring, Mexican adaptability, French reasoning are all welcomed and needed in my community, so that it can benefit from the alternatives to more generic, mass-produced goods—and have more options to sophisticated and thought-provoking designs.

Found it!
After many an anecdote to friends over the last 14 years, I finally found the actual ticket stub.
In 1992, during my meanders through the European land mass, I made a lonesome pilgrimage to Walter Groupius' original building, which also was home to the second Bauhaus after it relocated to Desau under third Reich presure. Desau is in what became East Germany after WWII.
Seemingly I happened to be the first western curious to go peek at the recently reopened campus and at what ...

Just two weeks into breaking the new bike in, I spontaneously joined the amorphous bike meander 'Critical Mass', which I had heard about and sometimes glimpsed out and about San Francisco streets. On Friday evening, as I was leaving work they happened to be massing just in front of the office... what the heck, join the flock!
I feel more at home in the city having joined about 2000 other biking peeps from all walks of life who pedal every last Friday of the month, for a few hours, aimlessl...

how tight a hug before we sweat and slide from each other's grip.
how slow can we go before reverbs surge from within our spines.
how deep can we rise before legs and arms flex and lock as if in mantaray flight.
how often can breaths cointerpoit our thoughts with a rush of blood to the head.
and still remain intact,
one more stranger
to the familiar nick of time.
