Come to the sneak preview of Flaming Lotus Girls 2009 Burning Man sculpture, Soma.

Soma, created by the Flaming Lotus Girls, captures the essence of a neuron. Spinning balls of fire act as nuclei within the dodecahedron cell bodies. Dendrites extend up into the sky and reach down to the earth, emitting constant flame and color changing light. Along her axon, extend eighteen individually controlled fire effects across the stainless steel arch with sequenced LEDs on the underside.

MISS SMOKIN' CRAIC! 2008: IRISH PAGEANT OF SELF-PROCLAIMED BEAUTIES

The Miss BRC Project* is proud to announce the first IRISH Pageant of Self-Proclaimed Beauties! Participation is open to everyone. All he's, she's and ze's of any (or no) sexual preference/identity are invited to take part. Give yourself a title starting with the prefix "Miss", make a sash and you are ready! The more Irish the better!

We are also looking for a lively, fun Master or Mistress of Ceremonies to host the event. Only those who can handle a Smokin' crowd and who truly grasp the concept of satire need apply ;-) Please email Ireland@burningman.com if you are interested in MCing the pageant.

Participants will reveal their unique Irish beauty in these three categories:

1) Fashion: Show us your personal Smokin' Irish Playa Style!
2) the Two Minute Talent Competition: No rules, and everyone has a talent - be it a stupid party trick or a fine art! Anything goes.
3) the Interview: Do you do it for world peace, the children, the Craic, or for the puppies!?

Represent your province/county/city/town/village, your alter-ego, or just yourself! Show us your inner Irish beauty!

Miss Smokin' Craic 2008 will be eligible to represent Ireland and is guaranteed to receive special treatment at the Miss BRC 2009 on-playa event! However, all finalists are beautiful and everyone wins by participating.

NOTE: No Beauty pageant is fair, bribes are encouraged, and we have assembled a panel of eminently bribable judges. Participate for FUN, rather than play to win!

Too shy to participate in the pageant? We encourage you to do it anyway! However, donating a creative Gifty Prize to the pageant participants is a great way to share the wonder of your art or yourself with both the participants and all audience members without that mortifying stage time. Email your intentions to us at Ireland@burningman.com and share the love!

SuzQ is hosting the pageant on playa this year, i will be at the family vacation home in the sierras with a few other NYC / burner ex-pats, enjoying the bribe pictured above... hangin with the pine trees, exploring caverns and making like a *real* steampunk:

Steam Powered Train Rides
Climb aboard a vintage steam-powered excursion train every weekend at Railtown from April to October. Trains operate every Saturday and Sunday, departing from the Railtown Depot on-the-hour 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Special "themed" excursions operate other times throughout the year. Enjoy a six-mile, 40-minute roundtrip ride through the scenic Sierra foothills, in vintage passenger coaches pulled by an authentic steam locomotive.
