a documentary film by Gary Hustwit is touring the country and I missed the first viewing but now it's time for the second coming.

October 5-7
Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco CA, USA

i feel like such at typography geek, excited by this to the point of ____, well i'll let you fill in the blank. yet i would be even more excited if I could inure this blog entry was in Helvetica for all.

Here's some more info:
Helvetica is a feature-length independent film about typography, graphic design and global visual culture. It looks at the proliferation of one typeface (which is celebrating its 50th birthday this year) as part of a larger conversation about the way type affects our lives. Helvetica is currently screening at film festivals, museums, design conferences, and cinemas worldwide, followed by the DVD release. Get more info about the film... http://www.helveticafilm.com/about.html

Perseid Meteor Shower - Sunday night at 11pm PT

According to the best estimates, this year Earth is predicted to cut
through the densest part of the Perseid stream sometime around 2 a.m. ET
on Monday. That corresponds to 11 p.m. PT Sunday for those living in the
western United States or Canada. (8 p.m. EST)

The interval when the meteors will be falling at their highest rates
will likely last several hours or more on either side of these times.

As a result, it is the late-night hours Sunday, on through the first
light of dawn Monday, that holds the greatest promise of seeing a very fine
Perseid display.

The moon, whose bright light almost totally wrecked last year's shower,
will have zero impact this year. The moon will be new on Sunday, meaning that
there will be no interference from it at all.

So as it turns out the Conexus Cathedral from Burning Man 2006 is still working to recoup costs. The project was a wonderful success attracting international attention and even showing up on satellite imagery. There were over 20 weddings and a fabulous dance events!

They still need to raise $7k to cover some unexpected last minute expenses primarily related to safety and structural integrity that were not optional. The structure could not have happened had this money not been spent.

So if you enjoyed this structure and want to help please consider making a tax deductible donation before the end of the year. It would really be appreciated and enable them to move forward toward BM 2007.

hugs might possibly be one of my favorite things in the world. And yet for many years i repressed it. Unsure of the others comfort with physical touch. now i try to let it roam free and even have different styles for different people or interactions.

but i haven’t tried this and it sure does look like a fun thing to try some afternoon. an exercise in openness perhaps or of giving to those you don't even know.

if you haven't cleaned off the playa dust yet consider recreating art.

When the dust gets thick on the back window, Scott Wade uses it as a canvas to create temporary works of art. Among his creations was a portrait of Kinky Friedman on the back of the Mazda driven by his wife.

Besides his finger, he uses traditional art tools, such as paintbrushes, and unconventional ones, like a chewed Popsicle stick, to make his drawings.

the great thing about creative vision and conceptual design is the freedom from budgets... and yet often constraints though challenging can yield amazing shifts and new solutions.

so the original design for the alters involved mettle work that would have been beautiful but not reasonable... so the alters were redesigned to meet the budget and i think their even better with special sauce... i was able to incorporate design elements from the beautiful rose window onto the surfaces of the alters. the photo gives a glimpse of them almost completed. so two beautiful alters to adorn the cathedral... i just cant wait to see them on the playa dust and all.

Style vs. Function

I’ve been looking at the differences between things design for style or function. When I ran across this product it really challenged me to examine when products should focus on function. What role does consumerism play in the acceptance of things made just for style? All big questions with no anzwers right now.

No matter what it look’s like a good pass it along therapy gift.

Yesterday marked the end of a long hiatus from the metal arts. Gosh the last time i picked up a torch was 10 years ago. where does the time go and why do we stop doing what we love? must work on minimizing that. anyhow it came back like riding a bike and still so much fun. welding, grinding and teaching others how to, such a wonderful saturday even thought i was inside.

I cant wait to see the structure glowing on the plya, walk/ride over to it, stand under the arches 40 feet in the air and know i helped build the experience.

And from the looks of it, I'll be doing a lot of the work to build my alter design too :)

just so cute! Making me wish i had TiVo.

With all the love, squabbling, self-sacrifice and rivalry found in any family, a group of meerkats struggles to survive in Africa's Kalahari Desert. Animal Planet's new 13-part series, Meerkat Manor, is All My Children meets Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom. Don't let their cuddly appearance fool you though — there's a good reason these meerkat families are called a "mob."

Meerkat Manor airs Fridays at 8 p.m. ET/PT
