about me
Supp everyone? Allow me to introduce myself, my name is Steve Madera. I am a DJ / Remixer / Producer from the bay area. Born in Daly City, and raised in San Jose, my inspiration lies in San Francisco. Thats where the love affair began with this feeling called house music.
In 1995 I began djing local parties in San Jose, mostly house parties, so mostly hip hop and r & b. I would draw a local following whenever I played. It was fun and exciting to watch a dancefloor react to the way I would mix the music. Not even 18 years old yet but doing what I was with music was nothing short of amazing.
Then in 1998, I fell in love with a local show on 106 KMEL called "Yo Mamas House" with Foxxee Brown. That music really moved me. I began to focus more on how to get my hands on these gems that KMEL was playing on the air. I learned of this place that sold the same music, Solid Grooves in San Jose and so began the record collection.
One day at Solid Grooves I met this DJ named David Harness, had no idea at the time of how important this man was. I was just grateful he
was able to name a record I was looking for. David
told me he played on "Yo Mamas House", but I was not familiar with the djs on the show so I had no idea. But, everytime thereafter I listened for David and sure enough he was the dj who was moving me every time I listened. Don't get it twisted though cause Pete Avila and Patrick Wilson also moved me with their art as well!
I would practice mixing house music with the records I was buying from Solid Grooves, and even put together a mix tape and sent a copy to Foxxee. A week later Foxxee was complimenting my tape, yet telling me how to improve it. Soon after I began to hang out at KMEL studios with Foxxee and ran into David again. He remembered me. I even met some great people I am friends with today. Patrick Wilson and Joseph JoJo Torres to name a few.
These men became my inspiration. Foxxee introduced me to Davids party, Taboo, Tuesday nights at Liquid in San Francisco. It was beautiful. I went every Tuesday night. I LOVED the way David made me feel when he spun, and I was always watching him mix.
In the mean time I began my quest to become a recognized house music dj. Not the next Paul Oakenfold or Danny Tenaglia, but simply a dj who could move a room with very positive feelings created by the way I mix the music. I had my first big debut playing in a club in November of 2001, at the Jungle in Sunnyvale. The party was a monthly called Clairvoyance, and I was the headliner. What a night!! I just kept doing what I was doing, always motivated by being exposed to the scene.
In the mean time I discoverd a very motivating party
called Evolution at 550 Barneveld. If you remember
Evolution then you know what I mean when I say that party was the shit! I followed that party from 550 to Snowdrift. So sad its gone.
In the begining of 2002, I met this wonderful dj named Anita Lofton. She made it possible for me to open up for Mark Farina, Sharon Buck, and David Harness @ Club Six. Eventually I was invited to be Anita's resident at her new Wednesday party, the B Sides @ Liquid. While there the owner of Liquid promoted me to Saturday Night Resident. Rapture, my party went from July of 2002 to March of 2003, when Frankie Boisse took over my party with Better Days at Pink (Liquid). Those were good days, I met great djs who spun at my party including Carlos Gibbs of DHP.
Working for United Airlines at the time, I took advantage of being a dj with flight benefits and took my records to Amsterdam and played at a few parties there. Kind of commondered the decks with the club owners and other djs approval, it was beautiful. DJ Cafe Sol and Bulldog cafe in Amsterdam, kudos! Also went to Rio De Janeiro Brazil in Summer of 2002 and spun at People club, Nuth, and Help in Copacabana. I also went on a Carnival Cruise and the ship event organizer was bumping my cd during the day on the crowded main deck. To see a ship full of drunk tourists dance to a cd I made was great.
In October of 2004 Scion and Toyota presented a dj battle called Get Selected at Club Six. I entered, and WON the house music competition! New headphones and that title, it was priceless.
Since then I have started remixing r & b songs and putting them out on vinyl as white labels. The djs are feeling them. My favorite dj even plays my tracks. Some remixes got me recognition in the south bay where I was invited to play at the "Remedy" of the south bay, "Foxy" at Cardiff Lounge in Campbell. The south bay is a tough crowd to play for they don't really understand soulful house music, but everytime they heard me I let them have it! I spin at Foxy once every few months or so, and the promoter says I am one of the only non resident dj's who he keeps booking.
If you are still reading this you are probably a house head or hopefully motivated by this, and I thank you for your time. A milestone came in June of 2006 when I had my birthday party at David's party, Taboo @ Pink. I opened up for David, the party was almost at capacity, and David, Leslie, Chip, Michelle, and the rest of the Taboo family got me a cake and did the whole lighting of the candles and singing happy birthday thing. IN THE MIDDLE OF DAVIDS SET!! He stopped playing to sing me happy b day. It was much appreciated.
I am a regular at Taboo, so Tuesday nights you will find me there. I will always have the ear for good house music, as house music and the people I spoke of in this bio all have a very special place in my heart. And it shows thru my mixes when I spin. In 1995 as a 16 year old I never thought I would make it to where I am today, and this is only the begining.
Aside from my djing, remixing and producing, I will begin to take things to the next level very soon with the help of my friend John Zane. Throwing parties! Big parties in a big venue! Maybe a few years later it will be venue(s), as in many, and perhaps one day I will run my own venue, or perhaps even own it. Who would have thought in 1995 where music would take me. It has brought me here to tribe.net, where the networking shall begin for my next project, a party. A big party TBA. Stay tuned...
