then some fucking guy tried to kill it. then the original guy tried to save it.
then they fired half of their staff. next the servers got really slow. now it takes about 20 minutes to load a single page.
tribe really started to wilt a while ago, actually just around the time that the nelson/ kootenay tribe (and related tribes) started to take off.
then facebook took over.
gross me out the fucking door.
myface and spacebook can ball my fucking sucks.

That cause acebook puts out after a beer or two. Tribe wants dinner and movie first.

Yeah, facebook has acertain trashiness to it,although it's maybe a little more versatile in some ways and maybe a little more fun for the 9-17 year old crowd. The topics on Tribe seem to be a hell of a lot more intelligent.Facebook seems to be a vehicle for online exibitionists to strut their stuff.I'm a member of both-they both have their purposes.

alan, the idea of starting a local social networking site has been tossed around before. i don't think its realistic unfortunately. a site like tribe is developed by teams of programmers working full time and requires huge start-up capital. i believe tribe was funded by venture capitalists if i recall correctly. there's a video about facebook (on my facebook profile, convienently) that shows some very unnerving information about facebook's funding sources.
jorma, i admire that about you... you've held out on the facebook thing. once you accept an invitation, 5000 people from your entire life history will pop up and start sending you 'drinks' and 'free gifts' and 'wall posts' and 'plants' and more stupid shit than your second cousin wants to sell you through amway. oh and the 'pokes'. those fucking pokes! i am not addicted to facebook. i can't get away from it, however, when every fucking person i've ever known has taken to messaging me through it. but i feel so dirty! |

i do use facebbok. but i am addicted to tribe. not facebook.
the gifts and pokes and plants are exceptionally annoying. and true to it's name it is 'face'.... facade. superficial. but a neat way to be in touch with long lost ones. tribe, is, i feel actually a kind of community... where you build relationships and have experiences. this is sustaining on a deeper level. facebook serves a purpose... as does tribe. the universe is perfect if you just let it be. |

I had no idea about all that stuff. I am surprised about 'plants'...for my virtual home? strange...there are a few lost people I would like to find but it seems the potential for awkward moments is rather high....or high school- whatever...

hi cloe!
you're probably quite correct. it may be a better strategy for me to put at least as much time into accepting facebook as i do criticizing it. they both have their place. and, after all, we've had cable t.v., shopping malls and top 40 nightclubs for quite some time and it's still a wonderful life! : ) |

facebook is handy for pictures and messages with friends.
facebook is annoying for the friend requests you get from people you barly ever knew in high school or junior high tracking you down. it's also annoying when you say no to a friend request and they ask again. but the most annoying part is all the applications and pokes and invitations - like a naughty quiz invitation from some person you haven't seen or thought of for 20 years. i just cleared out all my invitations on the weekend and i had a ton of them...zombie invitations, likeness quizzes. like fuck off already!! |

Facecrack is evil!
We've been dicussing social networking sites in one of my classes, especially facebook and their more-than-dodgy terms of use agreement. It pretty much states that facebook owns all user created content and can use it for whatever purposes they like. There were also some MIT students that wrote an application which collected information from over 700,000 profiles. I dunno about you, but thats more than enough to keep me off facecrack!
Even if tribe can be slow and dysfunctional sometimes, its still more user oriented than facebook, and I feel pretty comfortable putting any sort of content on here. Thats the important thing I think. |

i like privacy.
stay out of my space. get out of my face...book me on tribe. tribe can suck, but the others are just a bit much. friends don't let friends join facebook. say no to the FAD: Facebook Anxiety Disorder |
