DANGER: Mines.

Terms:

• Risk: The probability to incur a danger. 
• Danger: Exposure or vulnerability to harm or risk. 
• Barebacker: Who is out ‘n proud about his informed choice to fuck without a condom and/or have unprotected anal sex. Not necessarily a Gift-Giver, nor a Bug-Chaser: very likely to be POZ, much more than who fucks protected.
• POZ: short form for an individual who is HIV Positive and aware of it;
• Gift-Giver: HIV positive individual who complies with the bugchaser’s efforts to become infected with HIV. Not necessarily a stealther.
• Bug-Chaser: (allegedly) NON HIV positive individual who seeks partners who are HIV positive for the purpose of becoming HIV positive. Not necessarily via sexual intercourses.
• Serosorting: Having (not necessarily bareback) sex among sero-concordant HIV+ partners. For obvious reasons of indemonstrability, it is impossible to apply the concept to non-POZ people.
• Stealther: POZ CRIMINAL who deliberately lies about his status, denies to be a barebacker, and/or causes ‘accidents’ as condom breakage/slippage. He seeks sexual partners who are NOT HIV positive for the purpose of infecting them.
• Moron: Individual so stupid and evil as to prefer to jeopardize his own and others’ lives rather than accepting his own responsabilities.

And now, a super-short story:

“The sign reads ‘DANGER: MINES’. A guy reads, and steps in. And he blows up.”

End of the story:

• Blame it on the minefield, or
• Just a moron less?

…Too cynical? Let’s see it this way, then:

• I live in a such a weird Country - Italy. Ya know: pizza, spaghetti, mafia, mandolins, sun.
• In Italy there are some people named “catholic priests”.
• “A priori” - and by Authorithy, and for their own choice, they are not allowed to have ANY sexual activity.
• “A priori” - and by Authorithy, and for their own choice, they are not allowed to form ANY kind of family: no wife, no procreation, etc.
• “A priori” - and by Authorithy, and for their own choice, they are MUST obey to and agree with their Chief’s will and beliefs: no if’s and no but’s. No arguing.

Now guess which category keeps the majority of jobs as teachers of sexual education in italian PUBLIC schools? Bravo: priests.

Now guess which category is the most qualified to speak and teach about family-related subjects? 

Priests? Bravo again: you won a doll. But please don’t tell me it makes sense.

…Too localized? Ok: Please go on reading for now, at the end of this post tou’ll find something about “Men Who Bareback Should Be Made Partners in Health Promotion, Not Banished”. Which is not Italy.

Let’s stick to our minefield.

It’s just about choosing between denying reality and pretend it does not exist just because we close our eyes, vs. starting a war against windmills, criminalizing them “a priori” - when not in bad faith - just because they’re too cumbersome & unwieldy & annoyingly noisy.

… Or rather choosing to quit manichaeism - watch the world with a clear mind, and see how to deal with reality, instead of denying it.

Approaches may be therefore so different: 

• “Me? I’m just unfortunate. Blame it on the darkrooms (poppers and chems work ok as well)” (variant: “he’s been a bastard and lied to me”);
• Or: “Me? I’m savvy. I SOMETIMES fuck unprotected, but with NEG guys only” (variant: “the ones I trust” - usually a cheating BF);
• Or: “Barebackers are killers, they must be put in jail/die/etc” (not unusual after wanking on a Treasure Island Media movie);
• Or: “Bareback? I’ve heard of it. It’s mostly in the US, though: we don’t do it. (optional: God, I’m SO worried thinking they could get here too”)

And so on: but these approaches are not different, actually: they simply deny reality. No matter if just to dump each one’s own responsabilities, or not to appear too frightening to others, or whatever else.

Now, call me weird, but a “Danger mines” warning sign is the one which scares me much less. Or better, it just does not scare me at all: I’m grateful to whom put that sign, warning me in advance. He did his share - what I’m going to do with me now, it’s my business.

And hopefully coherently, since I happen to deal with mines in my garden, my sign reads “Minefield”, not “Kindergarten”.

… And this on an individual point of view. On a political side, the problems get bigger. 

Denying/lying/distorting/criminalizing/omitting facts only leads to ignorance - or even worse to bad information. Which leads to social stigma. Which leads to fear (which necessarily leads to hatred: we’re human).

Fear is a powerful tool in the short term: too bad, as powerful as fleeting - and above all totally backfiring in the long term.

Fear is a defensive mechanism, necessary to survival in an emergency. It needs no knowledge of what “lies behind”: it’s what powers our “fight-or-flight” response. 

So, by definition it’s based upon ignorance: and therefore, by definition, when the alarm is felt (not necessarily “IS”) lowered, it leaves its space to what was there “before”: NOTHING, in this case.

No self-confidence, no knowledge, no “real reasons” to support any choice. No choice - to say it better.

Just add to all this that often appearances may show ALSO the not-so-dreadful sides of an unpleasant situation - since they DO EXIST, too - and the deed is done: risks and dangers are seen as “far”, as things that “happen to others” - or simply are not recognized as such any longer.

If only someone who knew had spoken in time… But they chose differently. And they didn’t choose just for themselves: they chose for the others.

…To end this boring story: what I struggle for is that everyone is allowed to follow his beliefs and make his choices: but by that I mean they must be REAL choices, made in freedom and above all knowledge.

And that - whatever they are - they’re honestly shown for what they are: the only form of respect towards ourselves and others.

Perhaps it’s time that the leather community incorporate men who bareback into its credo of “safe, sane and consensual.” Without these men as partners in health promotion, one of the community’s most marginalized populations becomes disenfranchised from wellness altogether.

This is neither safe nor sane.”
